Chapter 18: The date

"Are you here to serve or to showcase your popularity?" Damien’s harsh voice startled everyone, as they hadn’t expected him to lash out over such a matter.

"We are taking a break here, so stop being dramatic," Dave said, unable to resist the urge to roll his eyes at his petty brother. There was something off about him, in the past, he wouldn’t indulge himself in trivial matters, but now he seemed more interested in them.

"Who gave permission for a break?" Damien glared at Dave, asking.

"Fine, I will stop asking," Dave, annoyed, replied and took his seat.

"If that’s all, you may leave," Damien ordered without bothering to spare a glance at Aurora.

Quickly bowing her head, Aurora approached the door before his wrath could be unleashed upon her.

"Mmm, the tea is good," Dave complimented before Aurora could leave the room. She smiled in response and left the room with the maids.

"I want the architectural design for the new pack house as soon as possible," Damien declared, capturing the attention of the Elders.

"Yes, Alpha, we will see to it," one of the Elders replied confidently.

"If that’s all, the meeting is adjourned," Damien dismissed the meeting, and they all left the study room, leaving Enoch and Damien alone.

"So, are you ready for the meetup?" Enoch asked cautiously, making sure not to touch a nerve. The preparations for Damien’s meetup with his fiancée had been arranged as per the agreement, and all that was left was for him to attend.

"Sure, a deal is a deal," though his words sounded sincere, Enoch knew they held hidden meanings.

"Just an hour, Alpha. Don’t make her cry," Enoch pleaded and placed a gift box on Damien’s desk. Knowing Damien well, the meeting was bound to end in tears, which was why he had his Beta to handle some matters.

"I will try," Damien replied and directed his gaze towards the gift.

"You can’t go empty-handed," Enoch addressed the intention of the gift and smiled.

"I would prefer it if she cried. I hope it’s not an engagement ring," Damien said nonchalantly, going to stand by the window.

"Ahh, I hope she brought a handkerchief," Enoch muttered worriedly, but Damien perfectly heard what he said and chuckled.

Why was there a need to get married if he had everything under control? He just couldn’t understand the way people thought, believing that a union was necessary to produce an heir. He could only hope his fiancée was someone he truly needed and not someone from the side of women he detested.

The following morning, breakfast was quieter as the Alpha had already left the mansion for his appointment.

Aurora felt so relieved that she smiled brightly while serving breakfast to everyone. It was noticeable, and Dave couldn’t help but ask, "Have you been proposed to?"

"W...hat?" Aurora stammered and smiled when she understood what he meant.

"I have had a headache for a while now, but I feel better this morning," she replied, referring to Damien as the headache. However, the others assumed she was talking about the normal headache they were familiar with.

She didn’t know who had called him out for a meeting, but she inwardly thanked that person and hoped for more of those appointments in the future.

"If you need anything, I am just a room away. Call for me," she addressed them after serving the table and happily walked away.

Dave watched her retreating back and muttered, "Why does it sound like the headache is the Alpha?" He shook his head and redirected his attention to the dining table.

Somewhere outside the mansion

As planned, Damien arrived at the arranged café at 10:10 am, ten minutes past the scheduled time, and she hadn’t arrived yet. He chuckled triumphantly, glancing at his Beta seated in a corner, making Enoch almost cry.

Apparently, the woman was going to be the one to ruin the meeting. She had already given Damien a reason not to want her. As someone who devoted all his attention to work, he didn’t tolerate lateness from his staff.

Enoch looked outside the café and prayed for her to arrive soon before Damien changed his mind. Just as he was about to sigh, she came running into the café as if being chased.

"Alpha, I...I was held up by traffic," she stammered, searching for an excuse to cover up her lateness. But Damien didn’t seem to care.

"Miss Sarah," he called out.

"Yes!" She almost yelled, thinking he was about to scold her.

"Relax, my patience has been bought. Please have a seat," Damien calmly said and gestured for her to sit.

Sarah wore a confused frown, wondering what he meant by saying his patience had been bought. Had the meeting been arranged against his wishes? But he was the one who proposed they meet, not the arrangements of both packs.

She took her seat and wore a tender smile, trying to portray the image of a proper woman.

"What would you like to eat?" Although his words sounded caring, his tone was off-key, as he neither smiled nor appeared interested.

Enoch shook his head at how poorly things were going. If only Damien could learn to tolerate a lady, even just once.

"I am fine with fruit juice. Alpha, if I may suggest, you could try the black mint coffee, it’s a favorite among men," she suggested, looking proud of herself for knowing the best coffee. Black coffee was mostly marketed to men as it helped boost their immune system and improve efficiency.

Damien wasn’t surprised that she knew about it. Coming late to a date meant she was used to going on dates and didn’t mind being late. Knowing the best coffee for men suggested that she had dated working men in the past.

"I see you are playing your part of a good Luna well," Damien complimented, and she blushed at his words. Just then, a waiter appeared in front of them.

"A black mint coffee and a fruit juice," Damien placed their orders.

"A woman should be well-mannered regardless of her position. It’s a display of good virtue," she said, trying to impress him. But Damien had seen that expression many times before. Well, he had also tried going on dates, but they never turned out the way he wanted.

Soon enough, their orders arrived, and the waiter was dismissed. They each picked up their respective drinks, and while Sarah drank her juice, Damien gazed at the coffee and mischievously smiled as he thought of something.

"Then you must have dated many men to know their tastes," he remarked.
