Chapter 32: Not Recognizing My Mother-in-Law
Chapter 32: Chapter 32: Not Recognizing My Mother-in-Law
Laura Yates remained silent.
"Of course you have to add it." Florence Fuller leaned against the table, staring at her so-called birth mother: "She may be a fool, but she has some brains when it comes to harming others."
"Florence Fuller." Laura Yates warned: "Have you forgotten that you almost beat her to death back then? Clara didn’t even call the police to arrest you; instead, she forgave you to save the Fuller’s face. And you? You don’t even want to apologize."
Florence laughed.
Seemingly recalling the scene, she looked at Laura Yates: "To be fair, it was quite effective. After beating her into the hospital, she never dared provoke me again. Had I known, I should’ve done it sooner."
"Florence Fuller!!!" Laura Yates’s anger surged, and she slammed the table, standing up to confront Florence: "Can you even call yourself human saying such things? Is this what the Shaw Family taught you to become?"
"Oh?" Florence seemed unperturbed by Laura Yates’s anger: "Then Clara is even more unschooled. In her, I see the failure of your education. I should be grateful I wasn’t raised by you."
Laura Yates, furious and eyes full of anger, stepped toward Florence to hit her, but Florence easily stopped her, flinging her hand away: "Ms. Yates, do you think you are qualified to hit me?"
Thrown off balance by Florence, Laura Yates steadied herself with a chair and shouted in response to the treatment: "Florence Fuller, I am your biological mother."
Florence looked at her coldly: "I’d rather not be your child."
"Ungrateful child!" Laura Yates’s eyes reddened: "I bore you for ten months with great effort, and this is how you treat me?"
"How do you want me to treat you?" Florence stared at her: "Like Clara, acting sweet and coquettish, saying ’Mommy, it’s my fault’ and ’Mommy, it’s all my fault,’ shedding a few tears until your maternal love overflows and you tell her, it’s not your fault... it’s someone else’s."
Her sarcasm was intense, even adding, "Absolutely a sickness."
"You... you..." Laura Yates looked at her with pain and anger: "How can you treat me like this, your birth mother, while treating Amelia Linney who raised you differently?"
"Of course not." Florence looked at her: "I respect and care for my foster mother. She’s wise and discerning, and you’re just blind!"
"Ah!" Tears started falling from Laura Yates’s eyes: "Yes! In your eyes, I’m not as good as Amelia Linney. You’ve returned to the Fullers but still think of her, even now."
Florence was getting annoyed: "What use is your crying? Should I call Clara over to comfort you?"
"You..." Laura Yates broke down crying: "How did I end up with a daughter like you... what did I do wrong..."
Florence opened the lounge door and left.
Laura Yates watched her leave coldly, feeling even more devastated.
Florence came out to find Lily Lancaster holding a newly drafted stock transfer agreement.
Hearing faint cries from inside, Lily asked Florence: "What’s got her crying like that?"
Florence looked at the stock transfer papers: "Probably can’t bear to part with the shares."
Lily pouted: "She’s treating her foster daughter so well, giving up her shares just to help her break into the entertainment industry."
Seeing no issues, Florence swiftly signed and handed it to Lily, giving her a few more instructions.
Lily nodded and walked in.
Laura Yates thought it was Florence returning, but was surprised to see Lily. She quickly turned her head, wiping tears from her face.
"Mrs. Fuller, this is the revised contract. Please review and sign if there are no issues." Lily handed over the contract.
Laura Yates took it coldly: "She’s already calculated everything; what’s there to look at." She signed it and looked at Lily: "She better keep her word and not go back on it."
Lily found it amusing, maintaining a polite smile: "Rest assured, our boss is someone who keeps her word. Just wait for the notice from Light Industries."
Laura Yates gave her a glance: "That’s reassuring."
"And my boss also mentioned, unless necessary after this meeting, don’t come to her. She doesn’t have time to see you." Lily added.
Laura Yates found it extremely funny: "Married into the Gardiners and thinks she’s flown up to heaven."
Lily quietly opened the lounge door, waiting for her to leave.
She found it amusing how Mrs. Fuller had insisted on interjecting into the company, even after they told her several times Florence wasn’t there. She made a scene in the foyer until finally getting up here, where they explained again Florence was out, yet she stubbornly waited and demanded they call her back.
Seems like another drama directed at the boss.
True treasure of a daughter she raised.
Laura Yates gathered her things, stormed out of the lounge. Just outside, she saw Luke Gardiner standing by the counter with a thick book in hand.
Luke also noticed her, finding her relatively familiar.
Laura Yates didn’t expect to find Luke here; she softened her tone: "Mr. Gardiner."
Luke thought for a moment: "Hello?"
Laura Yates realized he didn’t recognize her: "You’ve forgotten, I’m Florence’s mother. We met once at your wedding."
"Oh!" Luke understood suddenly, feeling somewhat awkward, having shown up only briefly during his own wedding.
"Hello, Mom." He greeted her with a smile: "Florence came to see you, huh."
"Ah, yes." Laura Yates smiled amiably: "I waited from morning till afternoon for her to show up. She was out on vacation, otherwise, I wouldn’t have come."
"Oh~" Luke explained: "We spent a week at the farm with Grandpa; he insisted we go, and we just returned today."
Laura Yates was stunned.
She smiled awkwardly after realizing: "Oh... I see, she didn’t mention that to me... Why are you here?"
"I’m here for her." Luke replied leisurely.
This supposed son-in-law of hers, with all his rumored escapades, was vacationing and now at Florence’s company... could it be...
"Are you leaving now?" Luke asked her: "Should I see you out?"
"No need, I’ll be going first." Laura Yates replied: "No need to see me out."
Luke nodded.
It was quite embarrassing not to recognize his own mother-in-law.
"President Gardiner."
A series of sounds accompanied their arrival—Lily Hart and Zomerton, leading a group, brought in several clothes racks: "These are the clothes you just looked at, and these are the finished products we’ve picked for you. You can try them on."
He had been leisurely wandering earlier and had eventually found several thick books on the shelves in Florence’s office—a comprehensive collection of their company’s clothing designs—and picked out quite a few.
