Chapter 30: Just go ahead and mess around
Chapter 30: Chapter 30: Just go ahead and mess around
Old Mr. Gardiner gave him a sidelong glance: "Do as you see fit."
This time Florence Fuller, after falling into the water, unsurprisingly, got sick.
After dinner, she even drank a cup of ginger tea to dispel the cold, but at night, she developed a high fever.
Feeling unwell, she slept unexpectedly deeply and dreamt of that accident.
It was her third year back with the Fuller Family, at the age of eighteen.
Behind the Fuller Family’s villa, there was a swimming pool, adjacent to a large green lawn, which had comfortable sun loungers and parasols. Florence sometimes liked to lie there and sunbathe.
Whenever she was relaxing, there was always someone who would come to make trouble for her.
Clara Fuller.
From the day she returned, it was clear that Clara didn’t like her. She made a huge fuss at the Fuller Family, threatening to run away from home.
How could Laura Yates allow that? Before the returning biological daughter could even settle in, Laura quickly appeased Clara first.
Returning to the Fuller Family, her status was insignificant, nowhere near Clara’s, nor could she match Clara’s social skills.
If she accidentally bumped into Clara, Clara would make it known throughout the house that Florence had pushed her, was jealous of Clara for replacing her, and was always setting traps for her.
Laura Yates always stood by Clara unconditionally, and while Michael Fuller was too lazy to manage household affairs, he would occasionally scold Florence when Clara complained enough.
With no one to rely on, Florence made herself invisible.
That day, she was sitting under the parasol studying an antique watch she could detach when suddenly the watch was grabbed away and thrown into the pool.
The instigator looked at her triumphantly: "Your tutor is here. Mom asked me to come and get you."
Florence’s pent-up feelings erupted that day.
She grabbed Clara’s hair, yanked it fiercely, and slammed her head against the nearby white round table. Blood appeared with the first hit, and she slammed it three times.
Then she directly pushed Clara to the ground and beat her up.
Clara screamed in pain and shouted.
The arriving servants and Laura Yates were shocked and scared at the scene. Florence was pulled away by the servants, but she struggled free and angrily lunged at Clara, clutching and tugging at her.
To this day, she hasn’t forgotten the expressions on those people’s faces as they looked at her.
They thought the usually quiet and sullen girl had suddenly gone mad today.
Clara was sent to the hospital with a face full of blood, while Florence went down to the pool to retrieve the watch.
Then, Michael Fuller returned to hold her accountable.
He demanded an apology from her, but she refused.
He punished her to kneel, but she wouldn’t comply.
So enraged, Michael ordered her to be kicked out.
That evening, it was pouring rain, and she left the Fuller Family to find him.
The watch was also something she had taken from him, under the guise of "studying" it, but now it was waterlogged and broken. However, she knew this man wouldn’t blame her.
But she felt very guilty.
Indeed, the man didn’t blame her, silently drying her soaked hair with a towel and letting her change clothes. Then he noticed the scratches on her hands.
They were from Clara when Florence was beating her.
Ethan Harper asked her, "Why did you suddenly hit her?"
She said, "I didn’t want to endure it any longer."
Ethan Harper held her arm, which was full of scratches, his long lashes drooping slightly, hiding his gentle eyes.
But Florence could sense his displeasure.
She didn’t speak, and Ethan took out a medical kit to apply medicine on her while she quietly watched him.
After he finished, their eyes met, and Florence suddenly lunged into his arms: "You seem to be angry."
"No." His tone was calm.
"You are." Florence’s voice was a bit cheerful: "I seem oddly happy about it. Am I sick?"
Ethan sighed, silently reaching out and hugging her tightly.
Florence was a little surprised and, burying her head in his chest, stayed silent for a long time. Just quietly embracing him, she fell asleep in his arms.
A tingling itch spread across her cheek, and Florence rubbed against it, slowly opening her eyes to meet a handsome and surprised face.
As her vision gradually focused, she saw the face clearly and snapped awake, sitting up abruptly.
The fever had just subsided, her body was heavy, and as she sat up, she swayed a little, holding her dizzy head.
Luke Gardiner withdrew his hand and stood up: "Just recovered from a fever, go ahead and wear yourself out."
Florence didn’t look at him, pondering the dream she just had.
She dazedly glanced around, her unwell body and muddled head overwhelmed by a sense of lonely frustration intertwined with grievance. She buried her head under the sheets.
At that moment, she desperately missed Ethan Harper.
But she couldn’t find him.
Seeing her looking so distressed, Luke Gardiner felt somewhat uneasy too. He lightly coughed: "It was wrong of me to pull you into the water. I didn’t expect your health to be so weak, causing you to have a fever all night. Once you’re well, whatever compensation you want, I’ll give it."
Florence made no response.
After waiting quietly for a while, Luke, seeing that she was still silent, buried in the sheets, thought for a moment: "Feeling unwell? I’ll call a doctor for you."
Over half an hour later, the doctor came.
The fever had subsided, but she was still a bit uncomfortable, so the doctor prescribed some medicine and left.
Luke went to fetch water and gave her the medicine. After taking it, Florence glanced at him, "I’ll take another nap."
Her voice was a bit hoarse.
"Sleep!" Luke held the cup, watching her lie down and cover herself with the quilt.
He quietly watched for a while, then left with the cup.
Florence was woken up at dinner time.
Having slept again, she felt much better and appeared more spirited. Old Mr. Gardiner, seeing her still looking a bit sickly, scolded Luke Gardiner a few more times and hurriedly asked Uncle Andre to serve her some soup.
"Florence, this soup was made from the biggest fish you caught yesterday, have some to replenish yourself. Look, there’s not a bit of color on your face."
Luke Gardiner took the ladle from Uncle Andre: "Let me do it."
The old man snorted coldly.
Florence silently drank two sips of soup: "Grandpa."
The old man thought she was about to talk about divorce matters, his eyelids twitching: "Luke is a real rascal, I..."
"I was the one who pushed him first," Florence explained, "I was very angry at the time and pushed him into the water first. He retaliated by throwing me in too."
Luke was astonished.
The old man paused and then realized: "It’s okay, he deserved it for bullying you!"
Florence sighed.
Old Mr. Gardiner kicked Luke under the table, hinting with his eyes at Florence’s bowl: Come on, flatter her already!
This boy just doesn’t get it when he needs to.
Luke realized: "Oh... it’s alright... I forgive you."
Florence: "..."
Old Mr. Gardiner: "..."
This incompetent guy, failing at the crucial moment.
Luke himself was stunned after speaking. Was he supposed to say that, shouldn’t it be the other way around?
"Don’t mind him..." The old man shook his head, looking at Florence: "Eat, eat, don’t pay attention to that fool."
Florence picked up her bowl, indeed not planning to mind it.
Seeing that her fish soup was almost finished, Luke added another bowl for her.
"Thank you!"
