Chapter 500 - 491: The Water is Boiling
Chapter 500: Chapter 491: The Water is Boiling
The last red-eyed monster fell down with a screech.
This one, however, wasn’t killed outright like the others; it was gagged and tightly bound before being brought to Yin Chong.
"Sir, this is the only one left alive; all the others have been killed."
Yin Chong raised his hand, and Luan Feng hurriedly handed over a pair of brand-new gloves.
After leisurely putting them on, he squatted down and pulled the dagger that had been stuck into the monster’s back.
"No blood, its cry could shatter eardrums, its movements are unusually agile, and its limbs can bend freely, quite a rarity."
Chong Shi came over, looking disdainful, "You’re not thinking of keeping this thing, are you? It’s disgusting!"
"As long as it has research value, it’s fine."
But it was clearly not the time to study this thing, so he stood up and instructed, "Pack it up."
Chong Shi’s expression was hard to describe; he opened his mouth but eventually said nothing.
As for the others that were killed, they were all buried on the spot.
"Cross the river."
Upon reaching the other bank, Li Yan, who was still collapsed on the ground, was yanked up; someone took a medical kit and quickly treated his still-bleeding ear before tossing him back into the group.
Lian Lian looked at his miserable appearance, trembling uncontrollably, but only dared to cover her mouth and cry silently.
As the group moved away, the hastily filled small mound on the riverbank suddenly moved.
Immediately after, a pale, thin arm burst out of the mound...
Yin Chong suddenly stopped, "No, something’s wrong!"
His halt made the entire group stop; Chong Shi frowned, "What’s wrong?"
"As we walked this route, everything else was calm without any anomalies, except for that river we just crossed, which appeared to have obstacles. Those monsters being stationed there must have a reason, when something unusual happens, there’s always a cause; I want to go back and take another look at that river."
Chong Shi almost cursed, "But we’ve come this far already; perhaps if we keep going, we’ll reach our destination. If you turn back now, whose time are you wasting?"
Yin Chong coldly looked at him, "If you don’t want to, we can split into two groups."
Since crossing the river, he felt he was missing something, along with a vague unease, and if he didn’t thoroughly investigate, he wouldn’t feel comfortable moving forward.
"Fine, we’ll split into two, but when I find what the Sect Leader wants first, don’t show up and try to snatch the credit."
Their conversation quickly ended in discord, and they parted ways.
Yin Chong’s group made quicker time returning to the river, and before they could send anyone to explore, several noticed the mound on the opposite bank had been dug up.
The bodies of the monsters were gone.
Even Yin Chong’s face changed at that.
"Be on guard!"
But there was no need to warn them.
A piercing shriek came, although unintelligible, the emotion within it was far more agitated and indignant than before.
The person who shouted ’be on guard’ didn’t have time to prepare before being grabbed tightly by a suddenly surging monster; sharp teeth pierced through thick fabric, biting the jugular vein.
Seeing the bloodthirsty nature of the creature, Yin Chong’s face grew solemn.
The consensus is that bloodthirsty things are the hardest to deal with.
Especially considering how precious his blood was, he couldn’t let it fall to these creatures.
The riverside was filled with screams, from both the monsters and the people of the Changcang Sect.
The previous battle might have been a test from these red-eyed monsters, met with merciless slaughter. Now, hatred possessed them, purely unleashing their fury.
After losing four lives and nearly ten others receiving various injuries, seeing more of their companions die, the creatures finally felt fear.
As the first one jumped into the river, the rest quickly followed suit.
Yin Chong’s face turned as dark as a pot bottom.
This skirmish, although they technically won, was a Pyrrhic victory.
It was his first time stumbling so badly on a mission!
Luan Feng, with blood-dyed face, mustered the courage to look at his visibly displeased face, "Sir, what now?"
"Dress the wounds first!"
They dressed wounds and buried their companions, all under a somber pressure.
One person cautiously went to the river to fetch water for cleaning the dirt from his hands, but as he was about to touch the water, he was shocked by an apparition on the river surface.
"S-Sir, the water, it’s boiling!"
Hearing the exclamation, Yin Chong looked up coldly, and seeing the unknowingly boiling river before him, abruptly stood up.
The river boiled more and more vigorously; whether it was due to the blood spilled during the previous fight was unknown, but the grayish mist on the river surface changed color, turning into a faint pink.
The mist rose with the boiling water, not just wafting above the river as before but drifting into the noses of the people standing by the bank.
It carried a sweet, metallic smell unique to blood.
Yin Chong was the first to notice the odd scent, "Cover your mouth and nose, quickly."
Without thinking, everyone did as he instructed, except for Lian Lian and Li Yan, who were a beat slow.
Lian Lian was dazed from the series of events, while Li Yan couldn’t hear due to his injured ear.
By the time they mimicked those around them, covering their mouths and noses, it was too late.
Luan Hua, holding the rope tied to the two, was suddenly yanked, causing her to lose her grip.
"Ugh!"
She was about to retrieve it when the Sir shook his head at her.
She was taken aback, then saw Lian Lian and Li Yan walking mindlessly into the water, seemingly under control.
They walked into the river middle, the water reaching their chests.
They should have been scalded by the boiling water, but seeing their state, everyone ashore had the same thought.
Could it be that the water wasn’t as hot as they thought?
Following Yin Chong’s cue, Luan Feng knelt down and dipped her hand into the water.
It wasn’t really hot, akin to hot spring water.
She shook her head, indicating it wasn’t hot.
Yin Chong watched Lian Lian and Li Yan still moving mindlessly in the river, akin to being controlled by the insects he used for manipulation, as if under a summons.
Could it be the creature’s summons?
His eyes darkened, hesitating for a moment before decisively gesturing, "Follow them!"
The others understood his directive, a flicker of retreat in their eyes, but they gritted their teeth and entered the water one after another, trailing the slow-moving pair.
Not long after, Chong Shi returned cursing with his men, only to find a newly appeared mound on the riverbank.
But what really changed his expression was the wooden sign before the mound.
"Four people dead, what’s Yin Chong playing at?"
Only by meeting could one know what happened.
From the traces left on the bank, "They went into the water?"
"Boss, shall we?"
Chong Shi gritted his teeth, "Let’s go in too!"
