Chapter 27: Ask her out
Chapter 27: Ask her out
The following day, Roman called for her, and she was now making her way downstairs to the dining hall. Upon arrival, she found Roman and Michelle already seated, with Roman feeding Michelle.
"You are here. Take your seat over there," Roman said as soon as he saw her.
"I will eat at the hospital. I can’t afford to be late. Why did you call me?" She replied, declining to join them.
"Hi, Pat," Michelle greeted with a smile, turning toward her. The sound of the nickname felt awkward, forced, even and Patricia offered a polite smile in return, keeping her thoughts to herself.
Without a word, Roman picked up an iPad and held it out to her. She stepped forward to take it from him.
"These are your schedules for the next month," he said. "Look through them. Let me know which ones work for you and which don’t. If your hospital shifts are a conflict, I will have that sorted out. Otherwise, you are free to reject any event you are uncomfortable with."
Patricia nodded and quickly scanned through the list.
Seeing as it was not something she could do quickly, she relayed, "I will let Kay know once I have reviewed it. I need to leave for the hospital now," then turned and walked out of the dining hall without another word.
Arriving at the hospital, she changed into her uniform and immediately began her rounds. Just a few minutes in, a nurse approached her.
"Dr. Patricia, there’s a new patient requesting to see you. Please come with me," the nurse said, surprising her.
"Me? Are you sure?" Patricia asked, puzzled. It had only been a little over two weeks since she started working in the emergency ward. Who would specifically ask for her? Besides, she didn’t actively treat any patient unless told to, why would a patient ask for her?
"Yes... It’s probably best you see for yourself," the nurse replied, hesitating slightly before gesturing for Patricia to follow.
As they entered the ward, her mood instantly soured at the sight of the patient. Of course, it had to be him. She should have guessed. What kind of emergency patient in this ward would go out of their way to request a specific doctor?
"Why are you here?" She asked, frowning as the nurse exited.
"Why else would I come to an emergency ward?" Syres replied, raising his hand. There was a small cut near the edge of his palm.
Patricia glanced at it and almost rolled her eyes. She bit back her comment, how was that an emergency?
"That’s it?" She asked, unimpressed. "I am busy. I will have another doctor take over. Wait here." She turned to leave, but before she could take a step, he grabbed her wrist and pulled her back, causing her to stumble against his chest.
"What is wrong with you? This is a hospital!" She snapped, her voice rising in alarm. She glanced around quickly, panic flashing in her eyes. Her expression turned cold and she was genuinely angry.
"I will kill anyone who dares spread rumors about us," he said calmly.
She stared at him, expecting a chuckle to follow but the unwavering seriousness in his eyes sent a chill down her spine. Her breath hitched, fear creeping in as the weight of his words settled over her.
The more she thought about it, the more convinced she became that there was something deeper about him, something beyond the flirtatious, playboy persona he constantly displayed around her.
"Fine. I will treat you but let me go first," she said and he finally released her.
She began cleaning the cut while his gaze stayed locked on her, tracking her every move like a predator studying its prey. She tried to focus solely on the treatment, eager to finish quickly and be done with him.
"It’s finished. You can leave now," she said once she was done.
"Let’s go on a date," he said, completely ignoring her dismissal.
She sighed. "I am a married woman. I can’t go on dates. And please, stop coming here to see me. You can’t go around killing people just because they might gossip about us." And rejected him blatantly.
"I can. If you want me to," he replied calmly.
She looked into his eyes, unnerved by the obsession she saw in them. What could possibly be so intriguing about her?
"Disappearing from my life would be far more effective than threatening to kill everyone," she responded, turning away. But he didn’t give up, he followed her.
He kept insisting on a date, but she ignored him, pretending not to hear.
"Don’t you even want to know why I am interested in you?" He asked.
She stopped and turned to him. "Why would I need to know why? I am married. Didn’t anyone teach you not to ask a married woman out? It may not seem inappropriate to you, but I was raised to respect people’s marriages."
"Then why did you marry him?" He asked quietly.
The question struck a nerve. She froze, unable to answer. Silence stretched between them. It was a question she herself had no clear answer to. She could have run away. She could have risked everything to escape the marriage. But she didn’t.
Swallowing hard, she lowered her gaze and turned to walk away, but after a single step, she halted.
"Pat!" Michelle’s voice rang out as she approached, waving enthusiastically.
For some reason, Patricia instinctively looked toward Roman. Her chest tightened when she saw him staring directly at Syres. Would he misunderstand?
"Ah! He was a patient I treated, and he wanted to thank..." she began, trying to explain, but Roman cut her off mid-sentence. "I didn’t ask." And her face flushed out of embarrassment.
Then, Syres stepped forward. "No. I only came here disguised as a patient. I am actually here to ask her out on a date. I am interested in this nurse or is there a rule that prevents me from pursuing your nurse, Dr. Roman?" He asked, raising an eyebrow at Roman.
Patricia’s eyes widened in disbelief as a wave of shock and fury washed over her. Oh, he was definitely sent by her enemies to doom her.
