Chapter 35: Azure Bay Adventures – Day 1 (I)
The chibi-fox’s holographic tail flicked. "The enchantments around the house. They’re... older than expected. More intricate. Like they’ve been reinforced recently."
Evelisse looked around.
The candles didn’t flicker.
The plates still steamed.
But now that she was listening, really listening—there was a silence under the silence. A breath being held.
She blinked hard. ’Is something here?’
"Not here," Fluffy murmured. "But... watching."
The moment passed like a shadow. Slipped away before she could grab it.
But the unease remained.
And as her family continued laughing, Evelisse found her hand tightening slightly around her fork.
Something was coming.
And this house?
This wasn’t just a storybook.
It was a beginning.
And maybe... a warning.

The morning light streamed in like melted gold, pooling on Evelisse’s silk bedsheets. Her eyes fluttered open to the soft, rhythmic sound of the waves kissing the shore below.
For a moment, she simply lay there—listening, breathing, existing.
No beeping monitors. No IV drip. No sterile scent of disinfectant.
Only the distant cry of gulls and the warmth of a sea breeze brushing her cheek.
She turned her head to the side, catching sight of Snugglewuff sprawled across her pillow, little legs twitching in a dream. She giggled, then sat up with a stretch, her white nightgown slipping off one shoulder like a lazy ribbon.
"Morning, Fluffy," she whispered.
The pink chibi fox shimmered into view, hovering above the dresser. "Morning, princess. You slept for precisely six hours, twenty-seven minutes, and drooled for at least half of it."
’I did not!’ she squeaked, touching her chin.
"Evidence suggests otherwise."
A trail of dried drool trailed from her face and oddly close to her ear.
With an unladylike huff, Evelisse scrambled out of bed and padded barefoot to the window. The ocean sprawled before her like a living sapphire, waves glittering under a sky so blue it hurt to stare. Palm trees swayed below the cliffside manor, and the scent of salt and sweetfruit mingled on the breeze.
She grinned. ’Best. Vacation. Ever.’
Downstairs, the family was already stirring. She heard the clatter of dishes, the low rumble of Marcus teasing someone, and Jared’s voice dramatically proclaiming something about pirates.
She quickly changed into a soft sundress, let her hair remain a crown of silky chaos, and trotted down the grand staircase with dainty determination.
The breakfast table was a battlefield.
"—I found it first!" Leo barked, holding up a crystal pebble.
"You tripped over it. That’s not finding," Lance argued, peeling a mango with a knife.
"It shimmered because I blessed it with my charm," Jared said, sipping coconut juice like royalty.
"More like you stepped on a crab and screamed," Callum muttered.
Seraphina was calmly feeding herself bits of seared fish while reading a parchment. Aldric nursed a cup of steaming spiced tea, eyeing his children like a general planning battle formations.
"Are we... fighting?" Evelisse asked, taking her seat between Felix and Lucien.
"Scavenger hunt," Lucien explained, handing her a scroll. "Mother’s idea. Day one of the Azure Bay competition."
"The prize," Seraphina added without looking up, "is a beachside crown and immunity from chores for the rest of the vacation."
Evelisse unrolled her scroll.
Bay Quest, Day One:
* A singing shell
* A floating fruit
* A pebble that glows
* A fish with stripes
* A flower with a face
* And something you can hear in your heart
"Oh!" she gasped as she munched on a loaf of bread. "Thaf Shouns Mashico (This sounds magical)."
"That’s because it is," Fluffy whispered, appearing near her spoon. "This entire bay is laced with dormant enchantments. Very old. Very curious."
Felix bumped her arm gently. "Want to team up?"
Before she could answer, Lucien cleared his throat.
"I believe Evelisse is best matched with me."
Felix frowned.
"You two can compete for her," Jared declared. "In a duel of sandcastles."
"No time," Aldric said. "One hour. Teams of two. Go."
It was chaos. Chairs scraped. Plates rattled. Leo tucked pancakes in his pocket for "emergency nourishment." Lance grabbed a net. Marcus took a map.
Jared kissed the top of Seraphina’s head and shouted, "Your feral legacy lives on!" before vaulting over the balcony.
Evelisse clutched her scroll, caught between laughing and crying from secondhand madness.
Lucien offered his hand.
She took it.
Together, they descended the cliffs, past flowered terraces and whispering reeds, until the beach opened before them like a forgotten poem.

The beach was a living fairytale.
Evelisse’s sandals squished into sand that glittered faintly with specks of silver. Strange little crabs darted around their feet—glowing softly, like living gemstones. The waves rolled in, smooth and rhythmic, as if the ocean itself were humming a lullaby.
Lucien scanned the shoreline, eyes sharp. "The singing shell is real. According to royal records, it’s usually buried near shallow coral groves."
Evelisse’s eyes sparkled. "Then let’s find it first, Your Highness of Strategy."
Lucien raised an eyebrow. "Was that sarcasm?"
"Never," she said sweetly, then darted ahead.
Snugglewuff bounded beside her, chasing fluttering sea-foam butterflies. Fluffy hovered just behind her shoulder, muttering, "Watch out for sand spirits. They nibble toes."
As they made their way toward a collection of tidepools, Evelisse crouched beside a rock. Something shimmered in the water. A delicate shell—pale pink, speckled with gold—rested nestled against sea moss.
Carefully, she reached in.
The moment her fingers touched it, a note—soft and pure—rang out. Like a music box made of seafoam and lullabies.
Her eyes widened. "It’s singing!"
Lucien stepped closer, gaze focused. "Let me see."
She cupped it in both hands. The sound seemed to hum straight into her bones, light and strange and warm. Almost like a heartbeat.
"That’s definitely one for the list," Fluffy murmured.
Evelisse slipped it gently into her satchel. She and Lucien shared a look.
"Let’s keep going," he said.
They combed the coast. Found fruit growing on vines that floated in midair, leaves shaped like lanterns. Lucien sliced one open with a dagger. The juice sparkled and smelled like starlight and lemonade.
Evelisse licked a drop from her finger and gasped. "It tastes like a dream I forgot I had!"
"Descriptive," Lucien muttered, scribbling notes in his logbook.
They found a striped fish sunbathing in a shallow tide pool, glowing pebbles near a fallen tree, and even a flower with a smiling face that giggled when Lucien accidentally sneezed on it.
Soon, only one item remained on their list:
Something you can hear in your heart.
Evelisse sat on a sun-warmed boulder, wind playing with her hair. "What does that even mean?"
