Chapter 34: Punched Into A Tidepool
Chapter 34: Punched Into A Tidepool
"Very well. The truth of how I met your mother..."
Aldric leaned back in his chair, folding his arms like he was preparing for battle.
"It was nearly twenty years ago," he began. "Both our kingdoms—Florabelle and Unaria—had caught wind of an unclaimed, magical coastal territory. Azure Bay. Rumors said the cliffs whispered spells and the tides could turn weapons into wildflowers."
Evelisse blinked. That sounded... exactly like the place she’d seen.
Aldric continued, "I was the second son then. I wasn’t expected to inherit. My older brother was the crown prince, he was sick but still kicking at the time and I was sent to scout new resources.
Seraphina raised a brow. "Whereas I insisted on going."
Evelisse’s breath caught. The candlelight made her father’s face glow golden, highlighting the shadow of memory in his gaze.
"I had just been promoted—barely a month into wearing the General’s crest," Aldric said. "And then, boom. A secret assignment. Quiet. No banner. No guards. Just me, a map that didn’t make sense, and strict orders to ’scout what lies west of the Broken Shoals.’ Nothing glorious. Just... efficient exile in disguise."
"You went alone?" Leo asked, mouth full of scallop.
"Yes," Aldric said. "It was supposed to be uninhabited. No threats. Just cliffs and mystery."
Seraphina chuckled.
"What?" Aldric glanced at her.
"You make it sound like it was you who discovered the place," she teased, eyes glinting.
"Because I did!"
"Because you didn’t," she corrected.
The children turned to her as one.
The siblings turned to her. She dabbed her lips with her napkin and smiled.
"My father didn’t want me anywhere near the edge of the continent. But I was heir to Unaria, and our military trusted me. My little sister was still in the cradle—I had to prove I could defend our people. So I trained. Hard. For years."
"So..." Felix narrowed his eyes. "You were a princess adventurer?"
"Indeed," she said proudly. "Trained for diplomacy, battle, survival, and the art of polite sabotage."
Jared whistled. "That’s hot."
"Jared," Lucien growled.
Seraphina continued, unfazed. "It was rare to send royal blood on such expeditions. But my parents trusted me. I insisted. My little sister was still a toddler. If Unaria wanted to expand safely, someone had to check the unknown. I was the toughest and most trustworthy—obviously."
"She still hits harder than most captains," Aldric muttered.
"She?" Jared asked, eyes gleaming. "So you punched him?"
"Let her finish," Lucien said, voice clipped but amused.
"I arrived at Azure Bay first. Or so I thought," Seraphina said, her eyes misty. "The cliffs were untouched. Windy. Sacred. I was walking the ridge, marking coordinates, when I spotted someone near the shore."
Aldric smirked. "A lone man. In royal armor."
"And I thought: bandit."
"She didn’t even hesitate," Aldric said. "Dropped down from a tree, landed like a comet—"
"—and socked him in the ribs."
"I couldn’t breathe," Aldric said fondly. "Thought I’d been impaled."
Felix let out a horrified giggle. "Mom!"
"I thought he was dangerous!" Seraphina said quickly. "He was tall and shadowed, and I’d never seen that insignia before."
"You could’ve introduced yourself."
"I was trained for ambush tactics!"
"You punched me into a tidepool!"
Jared was practically foaming with excitement. "Please tell me you fought!"
"Oh, we did," Aldric said, brushing a lock of hair back. "Blades, magic runes, strategy. For hours."
"And?"
"Mommy won," Seraphina said, raising her teacup like a trophy.
A stunned silence fell across the table.
"You... you beat Father?" Callum whispered.
Lucien’s eyes flickered. "Tactically impressive."
Leo applauded. "Respect."
"I was tired!" Aldric protested.
"You were outmatched," Seraphina teased.
He grumbled into his wine. "It’s the only time I’ve ever lost."
"Not true," she said, eyes twinkling. "You lost to me again—"
"In marriage?" Jared guessed.
"In a chess match," she corrected.
The table erupted in laughter.
Evelisse grinned as she poked at her roll. But deep down, she felt something warm bloom in her chest.
’They’re so... in love.’
Aldric shook his head, half-smiling. "She didn’t give me time to draw my sword."
"She swept his feet and pointed her blade at his throat," Seraphina added, smug.
"Then she said, ’State your kingdom or I’ll feed you to the gulls.’"
Evelisse choked on her juice.
"I was poetic even then," Seraphina said proudly.
The family dissolved into laughter.
"And yet," Aldric said, glancing at her fondly, "I didn’t raise my sword."
"Why?" Felix asked.
"Because..." Aldric hesitated. "She looked like the sky had created her from starlight and bad decisions. I was struck dumb."
Seraphina raised a brow. "You told me it was because I looked feral and outstanding."
"Same thing."
More laughter.
Evelisse grinned so hard her cheeks hurt. ’They’re perfect. Like a romance novel... but real.’
Fluffy hovered beside her ear. "They’re disgustingly adorable. I approve."
Aldric cleared his throat, voice softening.
"After that, we called a truce. Camped on opposite ends of the beach. Spent the next few days sketching the terrain, watching the stars, making maps..."
"And sneaking glances," Seraphina added.
"You weren’t very sneaky," Aldric mumbled.
"You *blushed,* every time I caught you staring."
"I did not!"
"Liar."
The children howled.
Jared raised his goblet. "To the fierce Queen who disarmed a King!"
"To the Prince who surrendered with dignity," Marcus added.
They all clinked glasses.
"But why here?" Evelisse asked, voice soft. "Why come back?"
Seraphina looked around the candlelit room. "Because this place... became ours."
Aldric nodded. "We met here. We sparred here. We argued. Shared food. Shared silence. This house was built later, hidden from records. Just for us."
Evelisse blinked. "So you... built a secret love cabin?"
"It was romantic," Seraphina insisted.
"It was reckless," Aldric corrected. "We were from opposing kingdoms."
"But we kept returning."
"Every full moon," Seraphina said, smiling wistfully. "Until war became peace. And peace led to alliance."
"And alliance led to proposal," Seraphina muttered.
"Right here," he said. "In this house."
Felix whispered softly, "So... this is where magic began."
A sudden hush fell.
And just as Evelisse smiled—
A cold shiver tickled her ear.
"Something’s not quite right," Fluffy whispered.
Her breath caught. ’What?’
