Chapter 32: Where It All Began
Chapter 32: Where It All Began
"You promised," Jared grinned. "Father. The tale. Azure Bay. You and Mother. First meeting. Possibly shirtless. Tell us."
Aldric sighed. "I said on the way. I didn’t say when."
"I shall fill the void," Jared declared, standing dramatically.
He puffed out his chest. "Very well. Gather close, noble siblings and glorious parents, for I shall tell you the most dramatically accurate version of Father’s love story ever performed in a moving vehicle."
Aldric sighed, resigned. "Jared, please don’t."
"He walked through the mist," Jared began, voice low and dramatic, "a young prince, fierce yet wounded, searching for meaning."
Seraphina chuckled behind her fingers. Knowing they were about hearing the most exaggerated piece of fiction known to mankind.
Lucien rolled his eyes. "Exaggeration is not artistry."
"Oh hush, you tactical mushroom," Jared replied. "Anyway, there he stood, cape billowing—when he spotted her. The most gorgeous woman this side of legend. Her hair flowed like a river of moonlight. Her—"
"Finish that sentence and I’ll turn this carriage around," Aldric warned.
"—her intellect dazzled him."
"Mm-hm."
Evelisse giggled, resting her head against the window. The trees blurred past, green and gold. Snugglewuff curled at her feet, one paw resting protectively over her boot.
They passed sunlit meadows, villages where children waved, and small enchanted waterfalls that giggled as they danced down stones.
It felt like a dream—the kind she never thought she’d have in this life.
Jared cleared his throat and rephrased, "When suddenly, she appeared. A beautiful maiden glowing under the moonlight. Hair like fire, eyes like the promise of war and breakfast."
Callum burst into laughter. "Bro!"
Felix was already sketching, whispering, "This must be documented."
"And in that moment," Jared declared, "he knew—his sword, his duty, his fate—they all bowed to one truth: she was theone."
They laughed for minutes straight.
The carriage wheels rolled steadily on, passing fields of wildflowers and winding trails. They snacked on mini lemon tarts, played a guessing game about who could describe Aldric’s old battle scars best (Lucien won), and took turns braiding Evelisse’s hair with the wildflowers Marcus collected.
The air inside buzzed with joy and family.
But amid the laughter, Evelisse noticed something.
At a stop near a quiet hill, as they stretched their legs and Snugglewuff sniffed a suspicious squirrel, Evelisse glanced toward the edge of the trees.
Her father stood there.
Still.
Just watching the Queen from behind, as she leaned down to pick a sprig of sage.
And in that gaze...
It wasn’t just fondness.
It was memory.
Longing.
As if the whole world had narrowed back to a single moment in time.
Evelisse stepped beside him quietly.
Aq
"Father?" she asked, voice gentle.
He blinked and turned, surprised. "Yes, my precious flower?"
She hesitated.
Then asked, just above a whisper:
"Did you love Mommy the moment you saw her?"
The wind whispered through the trees behind them, soft and curious, as though it too waited for his answer.
Aldric looked away for a second, a small smile forming at the corner of his lips.
"I... wasn’t sure what love looked like before I met her," he said, voice low. "But when I did, something in me just... settled."
Evelisse tilted her head.
"It wasn’t loud," he continued. "It wasn’t lightning or fire. Just... stillness. Like everything in my soul recognized her before I even had the words."
Evelisse’s heart fluttered. She looked down at her hands, thinking about that stillness.
"And then?" she asked.
Aldric chuckled. "Then she punched me."
"What?!"
"She thought I was a bandit."
Evelisse stared, wide-eyed. "You... got punched by Mommy?!"
He laughed again. "Right in the ribs. Nearly knocked the breath out of me. That’s when I knew—ah yes, she’s perfect."
Back at the carriage, Jared shouted, "Are you confessing secrets without us?!"
Aldric waved. "Get ready to board!"
They all piled back in. Evelisse took her place again, heart still thudding with her father’s words.
Love wasn’t always loud. Sometimes it was steady. Still.
Like the sea.
The rest of the journey passed in a blur of laughter and joy. They played guessing games, had a "who can spot the most birds" contest (Leo won, because he counted magical bugs), and even danced inside the carriage when Callum played his enchanted flute.
At one point, Felix handed Evelisse his sketchbook.
Inside was a rough sketch of her—tiny figure with a ribbon in her hair, standing before a cliff overlooking Azure Bay.
She touched it gently. "This is beautiful."
He smiled. "It’s the first of many."
As the sun dipped low on the horizon, painting the sky in streaks of rose and amber, the carriage crested a hill.
And there it was.
Azure Bay.
The cliffs were as soft and pale as the journal had described. The waves shimmered with streaks of pink from the sunset. And nestled between the cliffs, partially hidden by ivy and wildflowers, stood a castle ruin kissed by moonlight.
"It’s real," Evelisse whispered.
Lucien leaned forward. "How did we never know about this?"
Evelisse’s heart pounded. ’Because Fluffy found it. Because I’m not just a princess. I’m a liar with a system.’
"It was in a journal," she said aloud. "Buried in the archives."
The carriage rolled to a stop.
No one moved.
For one breathless second, the entire royal family just stared out at the horizon.
Then—
"Everyone out," Aldric said softly. "Let’s meet the past."
The doors opened, and the salty wind rushed in like a welcome.
They stepped onto the grass, feeling the earth soft beneath their boots. Snugglewuff darted ahead, yapping joyfully as birds soared overhead.
Queen Seraphina stepped down last, eyes misty as she looked toward the ruins. "It’s exactly the same."
Aldric placed a hand on her back.
And slowly, the family walked together toward the cliffs—toward memories, and perhaps, new beginnings.
Evelisse lingered at the back, staring at the scene.
Fluffy floated to her side. "You did it."
’I don’t know how.’
"You listened to your heart. And to me. Mostly me."
She smiled.
But before she could speak again, Jared turned dramatically at the top of the slope.
"NOW can we hear the real story?!"
Aldric groaned.
But Seraphina laughed and tugged him forward.
"Alright," the King said, raising a hand. "But no interruptions—"
"Too late!" Jared yelled. "I already have questions!"
Lucien facepalmed. Felix pulled out his sketchpad.
Callum opened a new scroll.
The siblings howled as they chased their parents up the hill.
And Evelisse?
She ran after them, heart light as the wind.
For the first time since her arrival in this world, she didn’t feel like a stranger.
She felt like she belonged.
Here.
Where it all began.
