A Serpent's Tale -
Chapter 288: Enchanting
Chapter 288: Enchanting
With a little shaking from me, I placed my hand back onto the orb that is supposed to give me my profession, a little worried that what happened before would happen again.
But it should work now that I actually have a position available for it.
[Ding!]
[Are you sure you want to select [Enchanting] as your new [Sub- Profession]? You will not be able to change your [Sub-Profession] until you reach the [Apex] of [Enchanting]. Are you sure you want to choose this as your profession, think carefully before deciding.]
I sighed in relief upon seeing that message, as it meant that I was able to receive it without worry. I accepted it in my mind and instantly felt the changes within my soul.
[Ding!]
[You have chosen [Enchanting] as your [Sub-Profession].]
The orb glowed with light and I felt something resonating within my soul. It was a familiar feeling yet foreign at the same time.
[Ding!]
[You have gained the title [Enchanting Apprentice]. You have now accessed the [Sub-Profession] Skill tree.]
’Ah, I guess I have that now also. I guess it makes sense. But what really matters is the fact that I can now start to learn enchanting!’
With that thought in mind, my eyes sparkled in anticipation as I immediately opened the book provided which taught me the basics.
I went over to the table and found a special brush there for this profession. But I wasn’t going to use a mere brush. I had better tools.
So even if it took me even longer to learn, I would use the best of the best and become the best! Like nobody else!
’Yes, that sounds nice. Best get started then!’
With my enthusiasm at its highest, I began working.
I started by getting everything I needed ready as I sat on a rather large circular cushion that could just about fit all of my tail on it, taking a stack of long rectangular papers and stacking them to my right, and taking out an incredibly ornate and mystical looking quill.
The quill was obviously of incredibly high quality, being made of a feather of unknown origin, at least to me. It had golden threads running along the spine and across what I think are called barbs?
Then, the tip has been refined down into an immaculately designed point that’s meant to direct the flow of the magically infused ink into the very tip of the quill for maximum efficiency.
Actually, there had been a second set of quills just like this, but it had an extra little piece attached to it. I grabbed both because I thought it might be interesting. And I’m glad I did.
As the guide book that explained how enchanting worked, had a little note inside that said that I could use my blood to write instead of ink because of how powerful it was.
In reality, it was actually probably twice as powerful since I had two incredibly powerful Bloodlines within me.
Either way though, the little addon to the special quills was actually meant to cut my thumb and draw blood down to the tip, just like it was supposed to do with the ink.
Apparently, because of the Divine nature of my Bloodline, I had naturally Mana rich blood. Which, now that I think about it, is even more Mana rich because of my [Mana Heart]...
Whatever, let’s not think about that. When it came to drawing blood with the quill, I had to press my thumb against the sharp edge firmly and then push it forward slightly then pull it back.
And that was enough to draw my blood all the way down to the tip of the quill, where it started to drip down onto my right hand as I held it beneath so as to not make a mess.
I took my thumb away and let it heal and watched as all of the blood slowly dripped onto my hand. Not a single spec of red was left on the quill, and I attributed that to the fact that the quill was probably enchanted itself, as it was giving of some mana emulations.
Using [Mana Vision] and my newly acquired [True Sight], as I felt that would help me understand things a bit better, I held the quill in my palms and carefully observed the mana flow coming from it.
With this, I noted some really tiny mana crystals embedded within the spine of the feather, which I found out with my [True Sight], forced all of any ink or blood to flow down until it was all gone, which was nice.
I could also see that the tip was extremely sharp, so sharp that it could be used to seamlessly stab someone without them knowing. Yet when I pressed it against a piece of paper, it didn’t tear through it.
Seeing that everything was in order, I began to finally practice Enchanting.
It began by writing runes, and because I was taught how to write specifically in Astral Runecraft, I would more than likely have a greater advantage, since Astral Runecraft is apparently the core of all magical thing in the world.
This method of writing is understood by all races all over the world, no matter what kind of language they have. Not to mention, it has magical properties also.
Which isn’t surprising since according to my father, this rune script is apparently the building blocks for modern magic and how it functions.
And because I know this way of writing, I should be able to learn this profession a lot easier.
With all of that testing and thinking out of the way though, it was now time to actually start practicing.
I began with the beginners guide that came in the book, which taught me how to apply magical characters onto a piece of paper properly without the magic going haywire.
The first couple of attempts were as expected, failures. Not surprising to be honest. The papers either exploded or shredded themselves to bits due to an overload of mana or an incorrect application of mana.
Then, my first successful application of a rune onto a piece of paper was the runic word for flame. And according to the guide, what I had just made was called a talisman.
Strips of paper with an enchantment or a spell on them that get used up after one use. They could have any range of effects, but it depends on what was written on them.
In this case, it would almost act like a fireball, but less potent, because it would just burst into flames after a few seconds before it lost all power and dissipated.
I actually tried it out just to see if it actually worked and it did thankfully.
When I saw that I had successfully done one, I immediately started practicing with every other rune that I could possibly think of.
From other elements, whether I was familiar with them or not, to runes of empowerment and such.
I then spent the rest of the day doing that, until I remembered that I needed to eat and sleep.
The next morning, after eating the last of my rations, I went straight back to practicing my enchanting.
This time, I learned how to apply more than one rune onto a piece of paper and improved my ability to write things down.
I even learned how to imbue my own mana into what I did, making the talismans more powerful than they already were.
The entire day was spent just practicing how to write everything and anything I could think of.
I didn’t even know how much time had passed until my stomach started rumbling again. But I didn’t want to stop here, so I made the decision to go back to Krara city and get some more food supplies for the next couple of days.
Whilst there, I subtly asked for the date, and turns out it was Mystra, meaning that I would miss my Astromancy lessons this week. Thankfully I had informed Eric of this last week, telling him that I would be at my inheritance and might not make it to my lessons this week.
When I got back, I continued practicing and practicing, going through several stacks of paper and making hundreds of talismans.
When I next woke up, I realised that I was running out of paper to write on. Thankfully, just like in the Forge, there was a storage room attached with more than enough paper for me to practice on.
I grabbed several stacks, accidentally dropping one on the floor in my enthusiasm, and placed them on my right at the table provided to me and continued refining my skills.
In the end, I quickly went through all that paper as well, and I feared that at the rate that I was going, I was going to run out by the end of the month.
Of course I wasn’t going to be staying here the whole month, but still. Whenever I came back here to practice in the future, I would definitely run out very quickly.
That wasn’t a problem though, as I should be able to just buy more in the city if that ever happened.
