A Serpent's Tale
Chapter 199: Interrupted Lunch

Chapter 199: Interrupted Lunch

The sandwiches were really tasty, with several ingredients in each one, and none of them being exactly the same, all with at least one difference between another sandwich, to being completely different.

I had scoffed down half of the sandwiches when I reached out for a drink, but out of nowhere, I felt danger and pulled my hand back.

The table had a chunk cut out of it and if I had been any slower, I would’ve had my hand chopped of.

I looked towards the direction that the attack came from whilst holding my hand, just out of instinct and to check that there wasn’t any harm done to it or anything. And up in the sky there was a bunch of what I assumed to be mages based on their cloaks.

*Sigh*

I look back over and saw that Kronia had sighed and had a disappointed look on her face. I look up towards the mages that were floating high up in the sky and were now rapidly descending.

They tried to throw what I assumed to be another wind attack at me but it stopped in mid-air for some reason.

"Kronia, what are you doing?" The man dressed in white robes laced with gold and had light green spiral patterns adorning said robes inquired.

"Robert... *Sigh* Fuck off, will you?"

I was taken aback by the sudden and unexpected rudeness and the fancily dressed mage named Robert seemed to share my surprise.

"K-Kronia? Why are you acting so rude?" He seemed to be put off before he shook his head and regained his bearings.

"Because I will not have you interfere with her life." Kronia said, referring to me.

"And why not? I am under the king’s direct orders to capture any suspicious individuals, and that woman right there, on top of being a demon, is suspected of being the one who recently stole a dungeon core." Robert retorted haughtily as he descended to the ground.

"Don’t care, fuck off." Kronia just responded in the same uncaring and aggressive manner as before.

"You know better than to offend the kingdoms over something like this." Robert threatened.

"And YOU know that I’ve never given a single shit about them. They’re just what ’protects’ me from their own bullshit legal system. I can take down several kingdoms in one instant and there’s nothing you can do to stop me. THEY know that, and so do YOU. Now fuck off before I make you." Kronia threatened the group of mages by displaying her thoughts, which were very provocative.

"Kronia..." Robert’s face darkened.

And then, another wind attack was sent at me but before it could reach me, it was stopped just like the last one, which I noticed was still hanging up there.

Kronia then sighed before she shouted, "I CAST IRON!"

"Wha-" *THWACK!!!*

Before Robert could ask what the hell Kronia was talking about, she suddenly appeared right in front of him and sent him flying by smacking his face with a frying pan, which just so happened to be the same frying pan from earlier.

She then went ahead and did the same thing with the rest of the other mages that were here.

*THWACK!!!* *THWACK!!!**THWACK!!!* *THWACK!!!*

When she was done, she stood up like a proud warrior who was training the young and wasn’t even tired, heck she even seemed disappointed, like, genuinely disappointed in the lot of them and not like a mentor would be at their students lack of progress.

*Sigh* "I’ve told you time and time again that you can’t beat me Robert, just stop pestering me and this poor girl and I won’t have to beat you every square inch of the way out of my family’s farm."

Robert then got up and complained like baby, "You’re cheating! You can’t use your chronomancy like this! It’s an affront against the magic association!"

Chrono what now?

Kronia sneered and retorted with, "Oh yeah? And what are they gonna do to stop me? I could just leave the damn thing. What are they gonna do then? They’ll have just lost a vital Chronomancer among their forces. You have no leverage here, LEAVE."

"The moment she steps out of here, she’ll be besieged, you know that, right?" Robert threatened once again as he rubbed his face.

Kronia’s response was just to clobber him again with the frying pan, sending him flying once again.

*THWACK!!!*

"Nothing will come of it, except maybe this kingdom’s downfall." Kronia commented.

Robert was shocked as he sat back and uttered, "You wouldn’t..."

"Never said I would be the one doing it. But it could still happen if you do something stupid." Kronia replied ominously, and I knew what she meant. My father would probably throw a fit and plot the kingdoms downfall.

Robert then grimaced and ordered his crew to leave and left in shame. And as soon as they left, Kronia immediately put on her old lady act, even though I could now tell what was wrong with her.

She was using chronomancy to alter herself in some way shape or form. I still wasn’t quite sure how or why, but she seemed to want to keep this act up for some reason.

She turned back to me with the frying pan now gone and had a cane in her hand to hold herself up.

"Sorry about that deary, you can go back to eating lunch now."

"What about what he said? About me being besieged." I questioned with uneasiness.

"Oh don’t worry about that, I’ll help you get past whatever blockade they have." Kronia offered a hand in escaping the law of this kingdom.

"Thanks..." I thanked her kind of awkwardly as I wasn’t sure where to go from here, so I just continued to eat away at my food.

The sweet snacks were, well, sweet. But they were also fluffy and delicious. Combined with the myriad of flavours from the sandwiches and the refreshing beverages that I had, this was probably one of the best meals that I’d ever had. I couldn’t quite remember what the best was, but I knew that I did have a favourite.

Once I finished my meal, I leaned back onto the chaise in satisfaction.

*Burp*

"Oh, excuse me." I apologised politely for my belching.

Kronia chuckled and said, "It’s fine, no need to have such polite manners here, this is just a simple farm."

I took a moment to think, and decided that since she said that I didn’t have to be polite, I would drop some pretences with her.

"Simple my ass!" I shouted as I sat upright once more. "You’re a bloody Chronomancer! Nothing about where you live can be simple!"

Kronia just continued laughing at my outburst. "Ahahaha~ Oh dear, this farm is indeed a simple one. Just because I’m special doesn’t mean the farm is either."

I stared at her with an incredulous look. "I’m not buying it. You have a chaise. A CHAISE of all things. No human just HAS a chaise lying around except maybe nobility..."

"No, I’m not any sort of nobility thankfully, and thankfully for me, they can’t make me one by force either. Too much political bullshit that I don’t care for."

"That’s fair. All that political crap is just very annoying to deal with..." I replied in agreement, falling silent as I realised that I would probably never have a life like hers. "I envy you, you know? For having such a carefree life with no real restrictions."

Kronia then got up and patted my shoulder and comforted me by saying, "I’m sure that you can get there one day. You have a long life ahead of you, and I’m sure that you’ll find what you’re looking for in due time."

"Thanks... I appreciate it, really, I do. Seeing someone like you in the position that I want gives me some hope."

"That’s good. Why don’t we go for a walk then? Or in your case, a slither. Is that right? I don’t know, I’ve never had much interaction with serpentine."

I chuckled slightly at her attempts to cheer me up, which did work to some degree and got up, accepting her offer.

"Sure, let’s go for a wander through your farm then."
