Chapter 96: Chapter 95: Broken Code
"I...I’m Reina..." The woman finally revealed her name, unable to look Zoey in the eyes as she utterly terrified of her intense gaze.
Upon hearing her name, Zoey felt a cool sensation wash over her, as the intense rage bubbling inside of her finally started to subside, her patience returning.
"I...I’m part of an Elite assassination unit and a core member of the Resistance." Reina confessed, her words a bit shaky.
’I had a feeling,’ Zoey thought, her expression hardening as she clenched her fists. This wasn’t good, they had attracted a pirates worst nightmare, the Resistance.
The Resistance was dedicated to capturing and killing pirates for their misdeeds to societies over the seas, their tyranny and cruelty being punished at the hands of these Elite mercenaries.
"How many of you are there?" Zoey asked, rising from the ground. She looked around herself, at buildings, and any secret corners that could entail someone spying on her, using her [Heightened Senses] to better enhance her senses.
Reina swallowed hard, she shouldn’t be spilling out some sacred information to their mortal enemies, but infront of Zoey, she felt helpless, and she knew that refusing her would end in her demise.
"T-three...there are three of us..." Reina confessed with a stuttering voice.
’....’ Zoey stared at the ground for a moment, her mind reeling, deep into contemplation. The number was definitely smaller than she had expected, but it made sense as to why they didn’t travel in large numbers.
They were assassins, and they couldn’t travel in large groups.
’Other than that, they seem to be incredibly skilled at hiding, I can’t detect them anywhere, their Mana signatures seem to be invisible. Are they using a high-ranked Item?’ She contemplated, a bit skeptical on the situation, but it almost seemed very likely.
"How did you find us? No one should’ve known about our arrival so soon." Zoey asked, turning back to face Reina.
"Uhm...." Reina swallowed, visibly sweating as she fought a hard battle within herself. "We’ve been tracking you for days now....secretly following you...and we were even there to watch you and your crew uncover the secret [Hydra’s Tear] treasure." Reina told Zoey.
Zoey’s expression hardened at her words, but she chose not to say anything until she was done telling her everything. As Zoey continued to listen to Reina’s words, an uneasy feeling swept all over her.
Her gut was screaming at her, telling her that something’s wrong, very wrong.
And then-She felt it.
A presence, small, subtle, but barely noticeable with the help of her [Heightened Senses] Talent.
Her eyes immediately widened, as her ears picked up a small whistling sound that cut through the air at insane speeds.
"Reina!" Zoey yelled, moving quickly as she grabbed the girl and pulled her aside.
Reina gasped slightly as she was pulled away from Zoey, but her surprise instantly turned to horror as she saw a sharp dagger plunge itself into the ground, at her exact spot, only missing her by the intervention of Zoey.
The danger had multiple bombs tied around it, crackling as the ropes on them burned, about to ignite a devastating explosion.
’Damn it!’ Zoey reacted quickly, holding onto Reina as she pulled her close and activated [Grace Of The Wind], shooting into the air as Zoey and Reina watched the dagger ignite a frightening explosion, flames spreading everywhere and a few houses being completely blown away by the impact, killing some civilians in the process.
The panicked screams of people echoed through the night as hundreds of people immediately woke up to the sound of the explosion, running out of their houses as they ran away from the destruction.
Zoey’s eyes widened as she saw the damage caused by the explosion, her [Heightened Senses] confirmed that multiple people have died from the explosion, her rage slightly shooting up as she didn’t intent for these innocent people to get killed, her eyes immediately glowed a demonic red, filled with her bloodlust and murderous intent.
"I missed, damn it." A frustrated voice whispered underneath their hood, a small sigh escaping their lips as they saw on top of a house, legs crossed as they casually tossed another bomb-dagger in their hand, playing with the weapon of mass destruction as if it were a simple toy.
Zoey landed on another rooftop, holding Reina close as she looked at the hooded figure. They wore the same robes that Reina had worn before they got burnt, and it confirmed that they too were part of the Resistance.
"WHY WOULD DO THAT!!?" Reina’s enraged shout startled Zoey slightly as she could feel the anger in her voice, her eyes falling onto her for a moment.
The hooded figure smiled underneath their hood, a creepy sadistic smile that mirrored Zoey’s own psychotic smile. They rose from their seated position, and started walking towards them, leaping from roof to roof, but keeping their pace slow.
"You’ve broken our code, Reina." The hooded figure spoke, their creepy smile remaining on their face, but their tone much more sinister.
"You were required not to speak a word of this operation, reveal your identity, or anything close to that matter." The voice spoke, pulling a sharp dagger from their sleeve.
"You do know what the price of doing that was, right?" They asked, initiating a ’I’ll kill you’ gesture as they ran their blade across their neck.
"Of course I do! I knew very well about the consequences, but it’s either I died from her, or from the organization. There’s nothing I can do about it, I was going to get myself killed either way...." She spoke, her head falling to look at the ground for a moment.
A tear escaped her eye, her emotions flaring up once more in a fiery burst of anger, "But still! Recklessly killing people like that, isn’t what the Resistance stands for! We’re meant to protect these people! Not kill them!"
The hooded figure scoffed, shrugging casually, "Like your words mean anything. At the end of the day, some people are going to end up as collateral damage, and there’s truly nothing you can do about that in a world such as ours."
"The pirates dominate we weak, and we protect them. Even if it’s as far as crossing some serious lines to do so, Reina." They said, placing their hands behind their back as they turned their back on them.
"You’ve been an outstanding talent, even though you’ve only been a part of the Resistance for a few months, it would truly be a shame to lose someone as valuable as you. However," He let his hands to the force of gravity, two sharp blades appearing infront of them as they burned with a powerful blue aura.
"Drastic decisions have to be made," They grinned, disappearing as they instantly appeared infront of Zoey and Reina, their speeds frighteningly fast as she barely had any time to react.
Zoey quickly pushed Reina out of the way, allowing her to dodge the sword slash of the hooded figure, the heat of the blue flames mere inches from her face, and lingering hard on her skin.
Reina stumbled as she was pushed away, falling onto the ground as she looked up at Zoey and the hooded figure, a person she had been working with for such a long time now, the leader of this whole operation, and the strongest person out of their unit.
Zoey and the hooded figure clashed in a dazzling fight of swords, sparks flew, figures blurred, the sound echoing out in a quick-paced distorted rhythm of dominance. With either side going their utmost hardest as they fought to overpower each other.
"Reina! What are you doing here!? Run! He’s going to kill you!" Zoey shouted, engaged in a fierce sword lock as she and the hooded figure fought hard to overpower each other, a frustrated grunt exiting her throat as she started to sweat a little.
’He’s as strong as me...I didn’t think I’d run into someone that could match my strength this quickly!’ She thought, blocking another sword strike as she spun around and countered with her own, sending the hooded figure back.
The hooded figure made a backflip as they were knocked away, landing onto their feet as they assessed the situation, their wicked amusement growing.
"Oh? I didn’t think you’d have been able to get strong so quickly." The hooded figure spoke, poking their cheek with their index finger, cocking their head to the side in contemplation, before a wicked grin appeared beneath their hood.
"No matter, I’ll just enjoy killing you before I come back for that traitor later!" The hooded figure dashed forward again, with even more speed than before as she knocked Zoey back hard with incredible force, forcing her to crash into a building.
"!!!" Reina watched the chaos unfold, her eyes wide in horror as the hooded figure turned to look at her, their face twisting in disgust as if not recognizing her.
"Your death shall be an example to others," They sneered, before dashing towards Zoey with crazy speeds, leaving Reina with her own thoughts as she sat there in deep shock.
