Chapter 68: Chapter 67: Burn the Past

The people trembled as they felt their knees give out, some fell to the ground, gasping for air as they felt their lungs clench around an invincible force, her heavy stare loomed over them like a weight of a truck, with some even passing out from the sheer pressure and intensity.

"As I’ve said before, this base belongs to me now, and I’m your leader." Zoey said, as she snapped her fingers, flames appeared beside her, crackling intensely.

The people’s eyes widened in shock as they stared at Zoey literally conjure flames upon their very eyes, disbelief and fear etched onto their faces as they watched the otherworldly sight happen infront of their eyes.

"Am I clear?" She asked, her dominance over the crowd clear.

No one spoke a word however, too afraid to even move a muscle. Zoey smirked, grinning happily. She put out the flames and removed the effect her skill was having on people, leaving some people time to finally catch their breath as they started to cough and gasp for air.

’I didn’t want to kill you, Marlius, but you betrayed my trust, and I don’t tolerate that, not anymore atleast.’ Zoey thought as she gazed at the decapitated corpse beneath her feet, watching as the soles of her shoes was covered in his blood, a look disgust forming on her face.

She stuck out her hand as she burned the corpse of Marlius to ashes, not even caring whether the people were watching or not. She turned around to face the people once more, placing her hands behind her as she looked at them with serious eyes.

"Dismissed." She spoke.

The people stood there for a moment, shock still evident in their forms. After a few seconds, they moved, returning to their duties, shock still evident in them as some trembled as they moved, thankful to be out of being under her malicious gaze.

"What the...fuck.." Devon muttered as he moved back to his post, leaning against a wall, his body still tremble as he could barely hold the gun in his hand. He slumped down, falling onto his butt as he let out a shaky breath.

He didn’t know what was happening, whether or not Zoey was a good person, or bad. Their leader before this, Marlius, was a cruel man. He would take most of the supplies for himself, whether it be food, clothing, or even water, as he wanted to preserve his resources, leading him to only give few amounts of stuff to his followers.

Sure, he was bad, but he was still their leader. Now they weren’t sure whether to fully obey Zoey, or to plan for a rebellion, but even if they all rallied up together, it would prove fruitless as even bullets couldn’t kill her.

Devon clutched his face, pinching the bridge of his nose as he contemplated deeply.

"Damn it...I don’t have time for this, I need to be on the lookout for monsters." Devon said as he quickly pushed himself off the ground, now wasn’t the time to be doing nothing, especially now that the monsters were becoming stronger.

"Daddy!" A little girl suddenly ran to him, causing to jolt in suprise for a moment as she quickly came up to hug him.

"Sweetheart..." Devon sighed softly, crouching down as he gently brushed the head of the girl. He was thankful that the children weren’t there to see the display of brutality, he wouldn’t want his only daughter to see such a horrid sight at a young age.

"Daddy, it’s my birthday today!" The little suddenly announced, excitement visible in her voice.

"Oh! Right..." Devon’s eyes widened as he ran a hand through his hair, he couldn’t believe that he had almost forgotten the birthday of his daughter.

"You didn’t forget, right?" The little girl asked, squinting her eyes as she stared into her father’s eyes, noticing him avert his gaze.

"Of course not! How could I ever forget the birthday of my little angel?" Devon told her, but as soon as he finished his sentence, he was met with a strong punch from his daughter that caused the air in his lungs to leave.

"Liar!" She yelled, her voice cute, but fierce. She crossed her arms as she pouted, letting out a small ’humph’.

"No sweetie, daddy really didn’t forget." Devon said, letting out a small chuckle. He flicked his finger on her forehead slightly.

"Ow!"

"Don’t hit your father, that’s bad manners." He told her, patting her head gently.

"What gift are you going to get for my birthday this time? Will you bring me cake? You never bring me cake." She said, her voice a bit dissapointed as she hung her head low. The sight pained Devon’s heart.

"...I’ll see what I can do about that, sweetie." Devon said.

He always used to asl for things to gift his daughter on her birthdays at Marlius, but Marliud however wouldn’t hand over such great delicasies, so they had to eat some lower classed foods for her birthday.

His daughter always wanted a cake to celebrate her birthday, but he had no choice but to compromise each time.

"Go home and help mommy, okay? Daddy will be back soon. Happy birthday, Mona." Devon said, patting the girl one last time.

"Okay, don’t take too long..." Mona said, turning around before running back to mansion.

As she ran towards the mansion to go to her mother, running past people as she ran through the halls, she suddenly bumped into someone. Mona fell to her butt as she looked up to see Zoey, who was looking at her with a furious expression.

"Ah...I’m so sorry!" Mona quickly apologized, grovelling at her feet as her body trembled out of fear.

’Oh, it’s just a kid. I thought someon was trying to stab me or something.’ Zoey chuckled, kneeling down as she lifted the girl up.

"It’s okay, just watch where you’re going." Zoey said, before walking away through the halls.

She moved through the corridor as the people bowed in respect upon seeing her, a small smile tugging at her lips at the newfound respect she had gained from her new people.

She walked into the office of Marlius, seeing the condition of the place. His desk was neat and organized, the room gave off a rich atmosphere as a huge chandelier hung above a glass table, where a bottle of wine and a fine glass had been poured.

"So this will be my new office now, heh, not bad~" Zoey grinned as she walked over the Marlius’s desk and sat down on it, a small triumphant laugh escaping her lips as she revelled at the feeling of being in power.

"I must be careful to not let this feeling become a bad habit in the future." Zoey muttered to herself, a small sigh escaping her lips

’One more night, then this’ll be-’ Zoey’s thoughts were quickly interrupted as a man burst into her office, causing her to immediately become alert, flames roaring to life as they hovered around her, ready to incinerate someone to ash.

"Boss! Zombies! They’re approaching the wall, and there’s a huge monster coming towards us!" The man said, his voice full of panick as his eyes were wide, the sounds of war happening outside immediately coming to her ears.

’They’re here already? It hasn’t even been that long since I came here.’ Zoey thought as the flames around her died down, she quickly got out of her chair, walking out of the room with a heavy stride.

’I need to hurry.’ Zoey thought, her eyes narrowing as she ran through the crowd of people quickly, her maximum speed only leaving a strong gush of wind to be left behind as she quickly dashed out of the mansion.

"Keep firing! Don’t let them come close to our base!" Devon shouted as he stood atop of the massive walls surrounding the mansion, firing his guns at the hordes of zombies that were rapidly approaching.

"Devon sir! Their not taking much damage! Our ammunition is almost finished! What should we do?" The man beside him asked, his voice full of panic as the assault rifle in his hand had no more bullets to fire.

"Damn it, did you sent someone to call the Boss yet!?" Devon yelled to another man.

"Yes sir!"

’Shit...only a few zombies have died so far...and....there’s that thing to take care off as well.’ His gaze landed on a massive bee in the distance, a gargantuan beast that flew with a loud buzz in the air.

"Interesting." Zoey’s voice suddenly appeared right next to Devon, causing him to jolt as he didn’t feel her presence near him, the other henchmen also being startled out of suprise.

"Boss..." Devon said, his throat clenching with great effort "The enemy has reached the walls, and they are trying to break it down and find a way through."

"I can see that, don’t worry, I’ll take care of this." Zoey said, a pleased grin forming on her lips as flames appeared high above her in the sky, crackling as they burned hotter than ever.

"It’s a shame enemies in the Trial can’t give Exp, due to my "Locked" Exp status. Sigh."

"Let’s begin." She said, snapping her fingers.
