Chapter 66: Chapter 65: Checkmate
"No...please..." Marlius begged, his eyes on the brink of tears as he slowly backed away from Zoey. Her cute, charming, but devilish smile and eccentric gleam in her eyes made his body tremble from fear, as he knew that his death was inevitable.
"Hm? Where do you think you’re going~?" Zoey asked as she quickly grabbed Marlius’s wrist, gripping onto it tightly as she stared him deep in the eyes, her grip leaving red lines in their wake.
"Please....I’ll do anything! Anything...just don’t kill me!" Marlius begged as he sank to his knees, his eyes streaming tears as the once formidable gang leader was nowhere to be found, all that remained being a coward who wished to preserve their life.
"Anything?" Zoey’s tone suddenly changed, shifting from cute and charming, to cold and calculating, as her expression hardened as well at the mention of the word ’anything’.
"Yes! Yes! Anything!" Marlius begged, his eyes full of hope as he looked up at Zoey.
Zoey looked down at him, placing a finger on her temple as she looked up to tne sky, her mind deep in thought. But then, something clicked as she remembered something.
"Didn’t you say that you were the leader of a gang?" Zoey asked, "The Serpent Mafia Gang, right? You are the boss of that gang, correct?"
Marlius hastily nodded, "Yes! I am the leader of the Serpent Mafia Gang! If you would spare my life, I’d give you anything you can ask for! Food, weapons! Anything, just let me leave with my life!" Marlius said, his voice extremely desperate, a slight tremble in their wake.
Zoey thought about it for moment, food and weapons were essential, yes. But with her around to protect David and his two daughters, she was undoubtedly the ultimate weapon here, and so the only thing that still needed to be addressed was food and shelter.
’This building hold on for long, as monsters and zombies are starting to get attracted to this area very quickly, so we’ll need to move. As for food, I don’t necessarily have to eat, as the apocalypse would be over in the next day or so, but....I need to ensure that David and his daughters have food to eat, so they come first.’
Zoey thought to herself, Hunters needed alot of energy, as their bodies were becoming stronger, and so they would need to eat more. But she was confident that even without eating for today or tommorow, she’ll be fine and strong enough to take on the Apocalypse.
"I want your base, full command over it, and everybody residing there. Can you give me that, in exchange for your life?" Zoey asked, her words laying heavily in the air.
She wanted a very good base that would be far less visible to the zombies and monsters, making it harder to find. The fact that Marlius was a mafia boss, as well as having access to a network of henchmen, weapons, food, and entertainment, meant that Marlius had to be quite rich in resources to be able to cater for so many people and their needs, especially in the apocalypse.
"W-what!" Marlius was about to yell in shock and frustration, "I won’t-" Just as Marlius was about to protest to the idea of giving up his base, his men, and his resources to Zoey, he gulped in fear as he felt the cold steel of the end of her blade at his throat.
"I don’t think you have a choice in this matter, it’s either you die, or you live and lose everything. The apocalypse is cruel, isn’t it?" Zoey asked, a small grin playing at her lips as she looked at the face of Marlius, who’s body started to tremble at the feeling of the sword at his throat, as it could kill him at any moment.
"F....fine!" Marlius said, his voice trembling as he raised his hands in a sign of peace, "I’ll do it..." He said.
"Heh, good." Zoey smiled, her eyes shining as she removed her blade from his throat, taking it into her [Inventory] as the sword vanished into a shimmering light.
"Wait for me infront of the car, I have to get a few people." Zoey said as she started to walk towards the building, but quickly stopped as she turned to face him with an intense glare, "Oh, and don’t think of trying to run away. I’ll be able to find you by tracking your scent, so it’s useless. Unless you want to die, of course."
With that, Zoey quickly entered the building, but not without burning the corpses of Marlius’s men and the zombies to ashes, burying the evidence of a brutal war.
’She thinks she’ll be able to take my base? My men? And everything I owe? Hah! In her dreams! My men are loyal! They’ll kill her upon hearing my command! If I can use the Rpg I have...no no no, that’s too much of a waste, we need to use that sparingly.’
Marlius thought, contemplating ways on killing her. It was obvious that brute strength wasn’t going to cut it, even if they were armed with guns, she moved like light, too fast for their normal eyes to keep track off, so it that option wasn’t available.
’If brute force isn’t going to cut it...then I have other ways of killing her...’ He thought with a dark glint in his eyes, moving to the jeep as he walked past the ashes of his men.
’I won’t forget your sacrifice...I promise that I will avenge you all!’ Marlius clenched his fists as he gritted his teeth, his eyes seething with rage and unimaginable killing intent.
The wind blew as the ashes of his men and the ashes of the zombies were carried into the air, blowing away as they left the scene, a sad sight for a leader, as he never wished for this.
After a few minutes of waiting, Zoey emerged from the building, with three new people behind her. A man with short golden hair and a beard, and his two daughters that were clinging by his side, both very young and barely scratching their teenage years.
’Who are they....Liam and Frank never mentioned that she was protecting these people. Is this why she...no, I should stop thinking that, she already affirmed that she didn’t take our supplies, so Liam and Frank could’ve been lying.’
’But if this all wasn’t true....then, why did we come here? Why did we have to anger a being that didn’t belong in this world? Why were so many lives lost! I swear I’m going to kill that bastard the moment I get to base!’
"Let’s go," Zoey said as she looked at Marlius intensely, terrifying him as her murderous stare still sent shivers down his spine whenever it occured.
Zoey watched as he quickly moved and opened the door for them to enter, kindly gesturing for them to enter, his body trembling.
’Woah, did Zoey really manage to take down a mafia boss?’ Davis thought with a suprised expression, before a small smirk bloomed on his lips, ’At this point, I shouldn’t be suprised. She can basically bend this world to her will, we’re all in her hands.’
"Come kids, let’s go, we’re going to a safe place, far away from the scary zombies, okay?" David said, his voice comforting as he gently pushed his daughters forward to enter the jeep, before climbing in himself.
Zoey shortly climbed into the car as well as she decided to sit right beside Marlius, keeping her cold, and murderous eyes on him. Marlius shifted uncomfortably in his seat, glancing away as he was too terrified to look at her face.
"Drive." Zoey ordered.
"Y-yes!" Marlius jolted in his seat as he immediately started the car, and pressed hard on the gas, immediately sending the car on it’s course as they began to drive.
The car moved through the destroyed streets of the Apocalypse as the jeep drove past ruined buildings and zombies that were too slow to catch up to them, while some managed to try and latch themselves onto the car, Zoey was already ready and quickly got rid of them as she defended them with her immense strength.
After a while of driving through the ruined city, they had reached the far outskirts of the city as a large mansion, guarded by large powerful walls and henchmen wielding weapons came into view.
"The Boss has returned! Open the gates! Clear the way!" A man with shades shouted as he ordered the henchmen around, his body tense as he looked at the car coming towards them, a huge sense of relief washing over him as he saw that his boss was alright.
The gates opened as the car drove inside the mansion grounds, stopping as Zoey and her friends stepped out, looking around the place. The walls were tall, and had huge electric barb wires, with sharp spikes ontop of those for even more reassurance.
Guards lined the walls, in and out, but there were also normal civilians that were subjected for doing normal work, like cleaning, and growing crops inside of a green house.
"Boss!" The men with shades walked up to Marlius, "It’s good to see you back sir! Where you successful on returning with the supplies and the superhuman, sir?" The man with shades asked, but he noticed something unusual.
His boss was shaking, trembling....
"Sir? What’s wrong?" He looked at Marlius, and then at Zoey. Her face was serious, and extremely intimidating as she let out a powerful aura around herself, that demanded she not be messed with.
"I....I’m not the boss...anymore..." Marlius muttered.
"...what?"
