Chapter 60 - 59: A Silent Guardian

Chapter 60: Chapter 59: A Silent Guardian

The moon hung high across the night as nightfall finally arrived, as soon as the first hour of the apocalypse began, a strange new change occured to the monsters as they felt power surging through their being, empowering them slightly as a small crimson glow emanated from their bodies.

"Graaaagh!!" A resounding roar of a zombie reached the skies as it felt it’s power growing stronger slightly, and while it’s body didn’t change much, it’s power rose slightly as it was a bit stronger than it was previously.

The monsters felt it too as their bodies released a crimson aura, growing slightly stronger just like the zombies did. The transformation impacted every monster as roars and growls filled the air, the Apocalypse was starting it’s Trial.

Zoey sat on the couch of the room where David had been in, her [Knight’s Oath] Sword hanging by her side, humming a soft glow as it hung firmly. David and his two daughters were currently inside one of bedrooms, his two daughters were too afraid to sleep alone without him, so he was forced to stay to keep them company.

’The first hour has already passed.’ Zoey thought as she stared at the screen of her system infront of her, which eminated a crimson glow, pulsing faintly.

[Time Remaining: 22 Hours, 47 Minutes, 57 Seconds]

’If we successfully manage to make it through the night, then a great portion of the Trial would be dealt with. However, the more time passes, the more stronger and smarter the monsters will become, so I’m going to have to get prepared for that, especially now that I’m protecting these three.’

Zoey thought with a slight smile that bloomed on her face, she gazed outside to the ruined world, her expression hardening as she thought of the challenges tommorow will bring, as the Trial was still far from over.

"Zoey, you’re still up?" David asked as he suddenly appeared from around the corner, leaning against the wall.

Zoey turned her head with a curious eyebrow raise, "I’m just keeping watch a bit, don’t worry about me. You should get some sleep." Zoey said, her tone a bit commanding.

David gulped nervously, her tone made his skin crawl, but he wasn’t going to let her miss out on some quality sleep.

"Zoey, I deeply appreciate all you have done for us, but I think that you should be the one who has to get the best sleep, as your condition is far more important than ours." David told her, a suprised look flashing across Zoey’s face.

’My sleep is more important?’ Zoey thought, tilting her head to the side slightly.

"What if something were to happen? Like a monster breaking in? What then?" Zoey asked, narrowing her eyes a little as she took on a more serious tone.

"Then I’ll scream for your help if that happens-" Before David could continue to try and convince Zoey to sleep, Zoey quickly cut him off.

"If you make noise, you can attract monsters more monsters here, and if that happens, we’ll be forced to relocate and find a new safe place to rest." Zoey said, releasing a small sigh from her lips.

"The monsters will continue to grow stronger overtime, and while they’re definetly easy to deal with now, that won’t be the case for long, so we’ll need to be prepared for that." Zoey said, noticing David’s solemn expression, she could tell that he was definetly worried as his gaze found the floor.

"But you don’t have to worry David, I’ve come prepared, I’ll make sure you and your two daughters are safe, so you can count on me for that." Zoey, flashing a kind smile.

David nodded, a small relieved smile forming on his face. He placed a hand on his forehead, shaking his head lightly, if she were to protect them, then they had nothing to worry about. He called himself a fool for worrying about that as a superhuman powerhouse was residing with them, atleast for the time being.

"I understand, thank you Zoey." David said, turning to walk away as he went back to his room.

Zoey watched him go as she leaned back into her chair, staring at the ceiling. The rundown place reminded her of her very first apartment at that old granny’s place, a small smile blooming on her face as she remembered all the times that granny had reprimanded her about paying her rent, and about how she would always beg for more time to get money to pay for it.

"Sigh, I’ll stay up for a bit, atleast until I’m certain that no monsters are coming for us." She muttered to herself, continuing to watch the ceiling.

Minutes passed as Zoey continued to keep watch, until it got to a point that she was certain that nothing would attack them yet, however, just as she was about to get some sleep, she heard it.

Tap! Tap! Tap!

’Running!?’ Zoey shot up from her seat, quickly grabbing her [Knight’s Oath] Sword as she turned to the door, her eyes narrowing as she put on a more cautious and serious expression.

Her [Heightened Senses] Talent had quickly caught the sounds of running, and it was happening in this building, just a few floors below them.

’Survivors?’ The thought entered her mind as she slowly approached the door and creaked it open, stepping out into the hallway.

The hallway which was once filled with corpses of dead bodies was quickly disposed off by Zoey after she had returned with Celina and Lana, the stench of death was gone, but was now firmly replaced by a eerie and foreboding tension as Zoey heard the footsteps starting to grow louder and closer.

There was more than person heading towards the top floors, and Zoey didn’t know whether they would be friends or foes.

-----------

"Ha...ha..." A man leaned against a wall, his blonde hair dangling over his face, messy and unkept, his breaths coming out of his mouth in a series of huffs, as he had been running for quiet some time now.

"Did we make it?" The blode man asked his companion, another man, with black hair asked, holding a large machete in his hand, cautiously looking behind the corner of the wall, to see whether or not they had successfully escaped from the zombies outside.

The groans of the zombies reached his ears as his body shuddered in fear, unconsciously gripping tighter on his machete as he began to sweat in fear.

"Shit!" The black haired man cursed under his breath as he watched the undead climb the stairs to the second floor, their horrid forms coming into view. "A few managed to follow us. We need to get rid of them somehow, otherwise we’d be doomed."

"Get rid of them? Are you insane? You can’t be thinking of possibly fighting them with your machete are you? I’m out of bullets, you barely managed to take a few down with your machete, there’s no way you can take them on, especially without my support."

The blonde haired man said, glancing at the pistol in his hand as the bullets he was using, the ones that had saved them previously, were finished.

"Well? Do you have a better idea? Because I don’t see any other way we could make it out alive." The black haired man said.

"Of course I have a better idea! We need to run and hide somewhere in this building, or do you want to join those freaks and become a Zombie too?" The blonde haired man told him, grabbing his collar as he pulled him and began running.

"We need to survive and report to the boss as soon as the sun rises again! I don’t want to go another day without eating anything." The blonde haired man said as he continued to sprint.

"I just want to get enough sleep, under a safe roof. I don’t care where, as long as it’s safe, I’d kill just to not stay up awake again, fearing for my life every second."

The black haired man said, remembering the night they had to spent before this inside of a rundown, abandoned home, the night was filled with dread and the fear of danger.

As they climbed the stairs of the building and eventually reached the last floor, they saw a figure standing in the hallway, their appearance cloaked in the shadows as they wore mostly black, a sharp object in their hand as they stood in the center of the hallway, exuding a mysterious aura that quickly made both men stop in their tracks.

"Wait, who’s that." The blonde man asked as he looked at the figure a few metres infront of them, standing there coldly, not moving, but they’re stance and the relatively sharp object they had resembled a sword, glowing softly.

"I think it’s a girl, though I can’t really see because of the darkness, still, the way she’s just standing there is seriously creeping me out." The black haired man said as he grabbed onto his machete cautiously.

As they stood there, looking at the figure in the darkness, it suddenly spoke, it’s voice feminine, but commanding.

"Who are you? And what are you doing here?"
