A Chemist's Interstellar Saga
Chapter 67: The Desperate Nyx

Chapter 67: The Desperate Nyx

After they finished eating, they returned to the Chemistry Department to continue making potions. But they found the entrance blocked.

A man in a captain’s uniform knelt silently at the door. Next to him lay another man, unconscious, also in a captain’s uniform. But this unconscious man was very thin, with sunken eyes, looking like he was on the brink of death.

Two medical staff were trying to persuade the kneeling man, as were the surrounding chemists and soldiers. But the kneeling man ignored them all, like a statue.

Arix and Varden exchanged a glance. Then they both looked at a familiar chemist.

"Raiden, what’s going on here?" Varden pointed to the two men and asked.

Raiden glanced at the two men and sighed regretfully. "The kneeling one is Nyx. The one almost dead is Draven. They’re a couple."

A couple?

Arix’s fangirl soul for yaoi awakened, but she suppressed it, knowing this wasn’t the right circumstance.

"They’re not just a couple but also the best partners. Sadly, three months ago, Draven was ambushed by an insectoid while saving a child. That’s how he ended up like this," Raiden said, full of regret.

"Then why didn’t they go to the Legion Hospital instead of coming to the Chemistry Department? Isn’t there a way to save Draven here?" Arix asked, puzzled.

"The hospital couldn’t save him, so how could the Chemistry Department?" Raiden replied with a bitter face. "Nyx just thinks that maybe Master Sims can help. He’s holding onto a desperate hope, kneeling here to beg Master Sims to save his mate."

"But this is the Legion. He’s interfering with the Chemistry Department. The consequences could be severe," Varden said, pushing his glasses up and looking at the two men as if they were foolish.

"Nyx has no will to live anymore. Why would he care about the consequences? He’s likely to do something drastic once Draven takes his last breath," Raiden said confidently, seeming to know them well.

"By the way, Raiden, you haven’t said what exactly is wrong with Draven. Why can’t he be cured?" Arix asked, more concerned about this.

"His psychic world was destroyed. There’s no way to heal that. No matter what we do, he’s just waiting to die," Raiden explained. Then, unable to bear watching anymore, he shook his head and went back into the Chemistry Department.

Arix and Varden looked at each other again. Then, they both looked worriedly at Nyx and Draven.

Arix had studied mental illness the most. She knew that when the psychic world shattered, it meant a person’s soul had no container. Even Psychic Ware couldn’t help, and death was only a matter of time for Draven.

Maybe because her lover’s breathing was getting weaker, Nyx finally couldn’t stay still. He bit his lip and shouted towards the Chemistry Department, "Master Sims, I know you’re there! Please, save my lover! Please, save him!! Save him!!"

"Master Sims!! You are a grandmaster, you must have a way to save him!!"

"Master Sims! I beg you! I will do anything! Just save him! Please!"

The people around watched in silence. Many kind people were already wiping their tears, and some older ones turned away, unable to bear the scene.

But Nyx’s desperate cries didn’t bring Sims. Instead, it brought the Legion’s disciplinary team.

"Captain, I understand your feelings, but you have to realize that this is the Legion. You are making a mistake," the leading officer of the disciplinary team said quietly.

This was probably the task the disciplinary team least wanted to carry out because the person dying wasn’t just Nyx’s lover but also their comrade. By stopping Nyx, they were also stopping their comrade’s hope of survival.

But the Legion had its rules, which no one could break, even if that person was a dying comrade.

The leading officer of the disciplinary team closed his eyes. When he opened them again, they were full of coldness and cruelty.

"Take him away!" the officer ordered coldly.

The other six members of the disciplinary team hesitated. They looked at each other, then quietly said, "Yes, sir!"

Seeing the disciplinary team start to act, Nyx finally broke down. This time, he didn’t beg Sims but screamed and cursed, "Sims, you old fool! Why won’t you save him! Why!"

"Aren’t you a master? Why won’t you save him! Answer me!"

"You are unworthy of your name! Sims! You’re a cold-blood snake!"

As the disciplinary team was about to move Draven, an old man walked out from the Chemistry Department’s door.

It was Sims.

"Wait!" Sims called out.

Sims’ appearance surprised everyone. Some even hoped that Draven might be saved.

"Master Sims is here."

"Maybe Draven can be saved now?"

"Not likely, the psychic world is broken. How can he be saved?"

"Yeah, true."

The disciplinary team stopped. Then, they respectfully saluted Sims, "Master Sims!"

"Hmm." Sims nodded in return. Then, looking at Nyx with regret, he said, "I’m sorry, I can’t save your lover, but this might help keep him around a bit longer."

Sims placed a delicate Psychic Ware necklace around Draven’s neck. After carefully examining Draven’s condition, Sims sighed and shook his head at Nyx.

The hope that had briefly lit up in Nyx’s eyes was instantly extinguished. He stopped screaming and struggling, simply holding Draven in silence, his eyes filled with despair.

The members of the disciplinary team hesitated, unsure if they should continue. They looked to their commanding officer for direction. The officer was about to give an order when Sims spoke again.

"No need, let them leave on their own."

The officer paused before responding, "Understood. Let’s go." He turned and led the disciplinary team away.

After they left, Sims advised Nyx, "Take him to the Legion hospital. He might live a bit longer there." Then, with a resolute turn, Sims walked back to the Chemistry Department.

Others in the crowd sighed and shook their heads as they also began to leave. Soon, only Nyx, holding the unconscious Draven, remained, like a statue.

"We should go too," Varden said quietly.

Everyone had given up, including Nyx. No one believed Draven had any chance of surviving.

But at that moment, Arix heard a voice—Vita’s voice.

"Arix, do you want to save him?"

Vita had been asleep in her psychic world, and Arix’s intense desire to save Draven had awakened her.

"Yes! Vita, do you have a way?" Arix almost forgot that her psychic world contained three sentient Psychic Incarnations.

Ordinary people might be powerless, but Vita and the others were different—they had consciousness and might know how to treat mental illnesses.

"I don’t know, but we can try," Vita said uncertainly. She had never encountered a shattered psychic world before, so she couldn’t guarantee success.

But Arix had faith in her. Without hesitation, she said, "Then let’s try. Having hope is better than having none at all!"

"Okay." Vita agreed warmly.

After communicating with Vita, Arix turned to Varden, a hint of excitement in her voice. "You go back first. I’ll come later."

Varden looked at Arix in surprise. Seeing her expression, he felt a flicker of hope. ’Does she know how to save the guy?’ But then, he dismissed the thought, thinking he was being overly optimistic.

Draven’s psychic world was shattered. Even his grandfather, the Alliance’s top Master Chemist, had no way to fix it, let alone a young girl. But despite his doubts, Varden was curious to see what Arix intended to do.

So Varden kept silent, watching Arix without saying a word.

Leave? Not a chance. He stood his ground, determined to see this through.
