The author of SSS-Class Suicide Hunter isn't just a writer, they are an artist. The novel never really goes where we think it will. It's not just cheap tricks to make us guess wrong, the author crafts such an elaborate, intense storyline that it's just not possible to guess what comes next. The world and the characters are alive, and they don't care about our expectations.
Also, apparently, the author writes in such a poetic way that several translation teams just gave up, which is why the novel was in limbo for the longest time, but it's finally fully translated.
I'd like to start by saying to people who don't have much time - Chrysalis is one of the absolute best novels you'll find on this page. Do yourself a favour and go for it. Now to the review. Chrysalis is a story of ANThony, who died and got reincarnated in another world as a monster ant. If you're like me, when I first heard about it, it sounds ridiculous to you and you have a good mind to not even start reading. That'd be a huge mistake. Persistent comments praising this novel finally got me to read it.
Our MC is an absolute whack-o, although he is filled with good intentions (and acid). The beginning is pretty much some survival, learning how to ant and an introduction to a massive evolution system. Soon, as Anthony meets his new family, the good story picks up even more. Watch and laugh maniacally as he wanders around, eats, builds religion and a society, trains magic, sets rest schedules, and generally does anything you would never suspect an ant of doing. Sigh or grin at the author's constant puns and meta jokes. Scream like we have when Anthony once again picks the weirdest, seemingly most useless evolution paths. Hold your tears when a family member dies in a great battle. Avoid the priest. Find your zen in the calming feeling of digging a hole. The story itself is good, but to me, it never really felt like I followed it actively. When reading Chrysalis, I was always more focused on the antmosphere, the laughs and the constant antics of the MC and company. Let the thwack be with you as you praise the Eldest (may his carapace be always shiny).
