However, this means there is plenty of sloppy novels. Just pressing on the recently updated will show you about a hundred smutty novels which are virtually trash, about 50 fanfictions (which i personally don't read) and some hidden gems here and there.

Brother, I do not mean to be negative, but I hope you did other stuff at the side and not spending 14 hours+ just reading novels. Did that sh*t for a while and now have basically anxiety problems, and some physical problems from staying at home for long periods of time.

Yeah basically this. If you focus on purely the harem genre, its like focusing simply on romance. But many authors simply insert harems just because the think people will like them if mc f*cks more women (which is basically the polar opposite). Having a typical (1to1) romance and action is the norm and a bit easiter to manage (because less complicated relationships). Now having a harem and action basically means more work cut out for you because you need to write good action AND manage plenty of relationships without making them feel unrealistic. Like, if a man and a girl like each other, and another girl is inserted in the equation (love triangle), no sane human would be like: 'let us share him/her'. But there are plenty of authors who put that sh*t without really thinking which makes it just disappointing. Like, if there was an excuse (such as old traditional setting, emperor having wives and concubines), then sure, it could work, but most novels are not written in such settings.

I have no problem with harem movies as long as they are executed well and without superficial characters or cheesy writing style.
Harem is also a literary element, but most authors write very trashy harem novels
You will rarely find a good harem novel with deep, realistic relationships.
So, as someone with too much time, and an avid harem enjoyer, Chinese has the most harem novels BY FAR, and the worst ones usually too. So, the typical cycle is: MC sees woman -> Woman beatiful -> takes less time than me to get a glass of water for him to fall in lover with her -> proposes / usually elopes -> bangs next chapter -> random young masters who have been courting the lass are now pissed -> young master killed/crippled -> old master comes -> killed/crippled -> ancestor comes -> killed/crippled -> new girl is found. This cycle goes for usually 10-20 girls, but more is possible too. Now, there are more than a couple good chinese harems, but the majority are bland, tasteless women with no personality, and a 'chad' (not at all) mc who picks up them up like pokemons. Japanese harem fall into another trope (I do not have enough words left to use 😭). Korean harems are by far the best, women have personality, plot is good, and interaction are humane. Man, Increase word count😡.

I've noticed that American and Chinese web novels tend to have fewer harems than Korean and Japanese web novels. Why is this happening?
No way the author is russian. I always though the lad was american. Well, know I know 2 important facts about him. 1. he is russian, 2. the dude is the craziest basement dweller there exists. He mentioned something about writing 600+ days consistently in his basement😭. I get crazy anxiety by stating at home for more than 2 days, meanwhile my man has been chilling the basement for f*cking years, no sunlight (checks out for mc's name, sunless)

The author is Russian but the novel is primarily written in English. The webtoon that is coming out though is being done by a Korean company, I am pretty sure.

you are indeed correct. Out of all chinese novels, the majority, and I dare say 80-90% have harems. And unfortutanely the bad ones too.
