Chapter 590: Chapter 587: Barret vs Barrier
Facing Ning Luoxi’s skepticism, Lin Tian had no choice but to fabricate his non-existent sect again, bluffing, "Although I never learned Daoist techniques from my master, I have seen them, so I recognize what Illusion Techniques look like."
What Lin Tian said was as good as saying nothing; he didn’t answer how he detected the Illusion Technique, but Ning Luoxi couldn’t press further—questions about one’s sect are off-limits.
"Brother Lin, what should we do? Just tell us, and we’ll follow your order. After chasing these little Japanese guys for so long, we can’t just return empty-handed—it’s too embarrassing; I can’t accept that," Thunder Wolf said, thumping his chest.
"Wait a moment, let me test something out first. If the Japanese can set up an Illusion Array, who knows what else they might have?" Lin Tian asked them to be patient.
He bent over, picked up a stone from the ground, and threw it hard up the slope. If it was merely an illusion, the stone would pass through the scene in front of him and disappear into the Illusion Technique. But Lin Tian had a hunch that this place was more than just a simple illusion.
The stone, empowered by his energy, whistled as it flew. Yet as it approached the air above the slope, it hit an invisible wall and came to a halt, rippling like water where the impact occurred.
With a "crack," the stone fell to the ground, and the ripples quickly disappeared, leaving nothing behind.
"What... what is this thing?" a team member exclaimed in surprise.
"Could it be an energy shield from a sci-fi movie?" Thunder Wolf blurted out excitedly.
"It’s similar to that, but not quite the same. This is called a Barrier, created through Daoist techniques," Lin Tian explained. He had thrown the stone thinking it might check for a Barrier.
"What exactly is a Barrier?" Thunder Wolf asked again.
"Barriers are crafted by Demon Exorcists or Onmyoji using spells, talismans, or magic artifacts. They can be used for protection or to trap people. Get it?" Lin Tian said, addressing his curious comrades.
In reality, he had only seen one once before. He could discuss the concept, but when it came down to specifics, he was clueless.
Thunder Wolf and the others collectively shook their heads, indicating they didn’t understand Lin Tian’s explanation.
Lin Tian, scratching his head out of helplessness, added, "Well, a Barrier is basically a Daoist technique. You’ve all watched the sci-fi movie ’Independence Day,’ right? The alien ships had a transparent energy shield that Earth’s missiles couldn’t penetrate. Think of it like that energy shield."
"So it’s really an energy shield." Thunder Wolf said, fascinated. He then picked up a stone and threw it with all his might, resulting in the same scenario: the stone bounced off the invisible Barrier, sending out ripples, then fell to the ground.
"Damn, that’s really magical. If you could equip a tank with a Barrier like this, wouldn’t it be invincible?" Thunder Wolf exclaimed with wide eyes, his mind brimming with possibilities.
Lin Tian chuckled, "Thunder Wolf, you’re letting your imagination run wild. Although I can’t set up a Barrier, I imagine the conditions for doing so must be quite stringent. Whether a Barrier can be moved or not is also a question. That sort of thing is highly unlikely to happen."
"Heh heh, I was just daydreaming. Even if you really could put a Barrier on a tank, it might not withstand an anti-tank missile. The enormous expenditure of manpower, resources, and materials to create a Barrier that can’t even stop an armor-piercing round isn’t worthwhile," Thunder Wolf laughed, somewhat embarrassed.
"Hey, right, the Barrier is blocking our way. I could give it a burst of bullets and see which is harder, the Barrier or the bullets," Stone suddenly said with a spark of inspiration.
After he finished speaking, he looked at Lin Tian, waiting for Lin Tian’s command. Stone was once a mercenary and wouldn’t rashly act on impulse. A soldier who doesn’t follow orders on the battlefield only has one end: death.
If not killed by the enemy, then executed by their own commander, because a single person’s actions could expose the entire team or demoralize the troops.
But Lin Tian didn’t issue a command because he remembered the Five Elements Barrier set up by the Heavenly Master Girl. If the attacking force exceeded a certain threshold, the Barrier would retaliate against the attacker.
If Stone fired a burst of bullets, and the Barrier struck back with a few bolts of lightning, that would be serious trouble. Stone was neither a zombie nor one of those Half Zombies transformed by the Zombie Gu. Hit by the retaliatory lightning, he would be reduced to ashes instantly.
"Stone, no need for you to shoot, it’s too dangerous for you. If something unexpected happens and you can’t react in time, pass me the gun," Lin Tian said, reaching out his hand.
Stone hesitated for a moment but still handed over the sniper rifle to Lin Tian. Lin Tian took the sniper rifle and examined it for a few moments.
This was a foreign sniper rifle, the Barrett M99 Sniper Rifle. Mercenaries preferred its other name, BIGSHOT, which translates to "immense power, one shot kills" in Chinese.
The M99 has a long barrel, high initial velocity of the bullet, and good accuracy, suitable for hitting targets at long distances. It uses 12.7mm caliber Browning machine gun rounds.
Many people think famous sniper rifles are very expensive, but actually, the Barrett M99 is quite affordable. What does expensive mean? An expensive sniper rifle means your technology is immature, and to reach a high technical standard, you need higher technical costs.
Affordability, on the other hand, indicates that the craftsmanship of the gun is very mature, and a very good sniper rifle can be produced at a low cost.
Lin Tian was somewhat of a gun enthusiast, often seeing media reports praising special police forces for being equipped with the newest sniper rifles worth millions, and each bullet worth so much, as if the high cost of sniper rifles was something to be proud of.
In Lin Tian’s opinion, it was actually a matter of shame, because the immaturity of technology led to the high price of the gun itself. What was there to be happy about?
Ghost and the others had all been mercenaries, so they naturally knew where there were military hardware trades and could get their hands on guns, so Lin Tian wasn’t surprised to see them with foreign sniper rifles.
As a student from Huaxia, everyone had undergone military training and had handled guns before. Shooting wasn’t unfamiliar to Lin Tian. Moreover, the M99 operated with a multi-lug rigid locking system and a non-automatic firing mechanism. After firing one shot, you had to manually eject the spent cartridge and load a second round by hand.
He expertly loaded the bullet, raised the rifle, and aimed towards the slope. Thunder Wolf and the others knew Lin Tian was skilled in martial arts but had never seen him shoot, so they were curiously watching. Ning Luoxi, the commander, also didn’t voice any objections, tacitly allowing Lin Tian’s actions.
Lin Tian pulled the trigger, and a burst of flame erupted from the muzzle. The bullet flew out, and Thunder Wolf and Stone immediately widened their eyes, because under the recoil of the sniper rifle, Lin Tian didn’t move an inch!
The Barrett M99 is a large-caliber sniper rifle with a rigid locking structure, meaning it has substantial recoil, something all snipers know about. Yet, Lin Tian was completely unaffected.
Lin Tian was just too abnormal! This was the only thought in Thunder Wolf and his companions’ minds at that moment.
