Chapter 585: Chapter 582: Gone!
"Brother Tian, we... lost them." Those were the first words from Ghost, and the tone was very strange.
"Lost them?" Lin Tian was momentarily taken aback and did not react right away.
"Lost them?" Ning Luoxi said at the same time.
The two exchanged glances, aware that each had received their respective information.
Indeed, this outcome was highly unexpected for Lin Tian. Ghost and Thunder Wolf were both highly experienced hunters. Whether in jungle warfare or urban combat, the prey they tracked almost never disappeared without a reason.
But the reality was that both Ghost and Thunder Wolf had lost their tracks. Could it be that even the subordinates of the Gu Cultivators were that formidable? Lin Tian absorbed this news and sensed that Ghost’s tone was unusual, as if there was more to say.
"Ghost, did something strange happen?" Lin Tian asked.
With Ghost’s skills and his Ghost Team, unless their target was an expert like Ning Luoxi, they wouldn’t usually miss. But the opponent’s interceptors couldn’t have been as skilled as Ning Luoxi because if they were, Ghost would have lost them long before now.
Moreover, experts like Ning Luoxi aren’t as common as cabbages, readily available. If the enemy’s minions were all experts like Ning Luoxi, others might as well not compete.
Ghost fell silent for a moment, as if weighing his words.
"Brother Tian, here’s what happened: we split into three groups, chasing the Japanese in circles. After they left the Capital City, we followed them to a suburban area. Eventually, the three groups converged at an abandoned factory, where we also met up with Thunder Wolf."
"The Japanese tried to dismantle a safe in the abandoned factory but were unsuccessful. They made a phone call, probably to request instructions from their superiors or leader. Afterwards, they left the factory and continued on their way."
"We kept on following them, and when the cars could no longer travel, we switched to on foot. Everything seemed smooth until the peculiar incident occurred right after we left a small grove," Ghost continued, his voice laced with a strange tone.
"Did you see a ghost?" Lin Tian interjected.
"No, seeing a ghost would have been better. There wasn’t even a shadow of one. We followed the Japanese out of the grove, but then we suddenly lost sight of them!" Ghost exclaimed, his voice thick with puzzlement.
Lin Tian immediately caught the crux of his statement and questioned, "You said you suddenly lost sight of them?"
"Yes, that small grove wasn’t large—just a few minutes’ walk. We followed them at a distance, and after the Japanese left the grove, a thick fog suddenly arose from the woods. It was already dark by then, and it’s quite normal for fog to form at night. We didn’t mind it because even in the fog, we were confident we could keep track of them. But strangely, once we moved past the grove, the Japanese were nowhere to be seen," Ghost explained.
"A fog?" Lin Tian pondered aloud.
Normally, it was indeed common for fog to form at night. As the sun sets and night descends, the sudden drop in ground and air temperature causes the air’s moisture to condense into tiny droplets. These droplets, mixed with the airborne dust, form fog.
Especially in areas like woods and rivers where the humidity is high, temperature changes are more prone to producing fog.
"Yes, Brother Tian, right after passing through the small grove, there was a small hill with sparse trees and not much vegetation, hardly a place to hide. We searched the vicinity again, but still no sign of the Japanese," Ghost said, somewhat ashamedly.
Scouting, searching, pursuing, decapitation missions—these were strengths of the Ghost Team. He was named Ghost, his team was called the Ghost Team, and their tactical operations were known as Ghost operations. These were all praises given to them by fellow mercenaries.
But now, failing in their strong suite, Ghost felt very ashamed, especially since he was an Ancient Yoga cultivator, equivalent to a Huaxia Ancient Martial Artist. Losing track made him even more ashamed.
"Ghost, don’t overthink it, this matter is quite mysterious, I’m afraid I would have lost them too. You guys should withdraw from the forest now and wait for us outside the woods. Remember, do not act on your own, otherwise, it will be dangerous for you!" Lin Tian thought for a moment and then instructed.
"Okay, call ended." Ghost replied, then hung up the phone.
After hanging up the phone, Lin Tian turned to Ning Luoxi, who also looked up, her eyes filled with confusion.
Lin Tian said, "Miss Luoxi also heard, Ghost Team is known as Ghost, and now they have really encountered a supernatural event."
"Whether it’s a supernatural event or not, we will know only after checking. Sometimes, ghosts are not stronger than humans, and events created by humans are stranger. That place has definitely been tampered with by the Japanese, we must go there and check it out ourselves." Ning Luoxi said calmly, as an Ancient Martial Artist who had encountered many strange events, she was no longer surprised by odd occurrences.
"I was thinking the same, just give me a moment," Lin Tian agreed, then pressed his smart bracelet to call Rossi.
"Brother Tian, what do you need?" Rossi’s voice was as respectful as ever.
"Ghost Team has run into some trouble, I need to head out. You’re responsible for the security of the Heavenly Mansion restaurant until the dinner is over, and make sure that Futian Yizhi and Bai Zhengchu’s people do not leave the vicinity of the restaurant," Lin Tian gave his direct order.
"Understood, Brother Tian," Rossi responded.
After hanging up the phone, Lin Tian nodded to Ning Luoxi, indicating they could leave.
Ning Luoxi jumped straight up from the spot and leaped out over the fence. Lin Tian watched, dumbfounded. She was still wearing a cheongsam, wasn’t she afraid of exposing too much with such a big move?
"Aren’t you coming out? What are you dazing at inside?" Ning Luoxi’s voice came from beyond the fence.
Lin Tian had no choice but to follow suit and jump over the fence as well.
"I have a car, follow me," Lin Tian said.
The Land Rover SUV was temporarily assigned by Mrs. Xiao, and right now, it was proving useful. The ads always called it an all-terrain vehicle, whether it truly was, only taking it out for a spin would tell.
Upon reaching the garage and retrieving the car, Lin Tian was about to start the car but noticed Ning Luoxi’s cheongsam attire.
"Miss Luoxi, we might engage in fierce fighting during this operation, are you really going to wear that cheongsam?" Lin Tian asked.
Although with Ning Luoxi’s skills, whatever she wore wouldn’t affect her combat effectiveness, a cheongsam was after all a form-fitting dress, which would surely split in a fight, wouldn’t it? And if it split, wouldn’t that expose too much? It was one thing to keep such a good fortune to oneself, but letting the Japanese see it was something Lin Tian shamelessly pondered.
"Just drive your car, I have my ways, you don’t need to worry about it," Ning Luoxi said indifferently.
Lin Tian shook his head speechlessly, then started the car, shifted gears, and stepped on the accelerator, driving out of the garage. However, his peripheral vision lingered on Ning Luoxi, curious about the method she mentioned, could it be she was planning to change clothes right in the car?
