Chapter 551: Chapter 548: The Legendary Female Auctioneer
The woman who walked out had a very tall figure, dressed in a cheongsam that accentuated her shapely body. Her hair was pinned up, exposing her fair neck, and although her face wasn’t as pretty as the Xiao sisters, it wasn’t bad either. Even in the entertainment industry, she could definitely make a living with that face.
Thinking of the entertainment industry, Lin Tian suddenly realized that the female auctioneer looked familiar, especially her expression, which was always cold, just like a female celebrity’s.
"Brother Zhou, have you noticed that this female auctioneer looks a lot like a female celebrity from the entertainment industry?" Lin Tian asked, puzzled.
"What do you mean ’looks like’? She is a female celebrity from the entertainment industry, alright!" Zhou Botong said with disdain, as if Lin Tian was incredibly out of touch.
"Is she that popular female celebrity? I seem to have forgotten her name," Lin Tian said, scrutinizing the woman who had already stepped onto the auction stage but still couldn’t recall her name.
"You’re kidding, Brother Lin, you really don’t know who she is?" Zhou Botong asked in surprise.
"If she was famous two years ago, I definitely would have known. I was still studying back then. If she only became famous this year, I really might not know. Before I came to the Xiao Family, I worked every day like an ox; I didn’t have time to pay attention to the entertainment industry," said Lin Tian, shaking his head.
"She actually started to become famous last year, but what’s rare is that she doesn’t have any scandals," Zhou Botong remarked.
"Then why would Mrs. Xiao hire a female celebrity to be an auctioneer? Auctioneering isn’t acting; it’s not enough just to be pretty. In the end, what’s her name?" Lin Tian said dismissively.
While it’s feasible to have a celebrity host, being an auctioneer involves more than just hosting; it has its own set of skills.
"This female star’s name is Shi Feifei," Zhou Botong replied.
"Feifei? What a tacky name," Lin Tian said, shaking his head.
No sooner had he finished speaking than Shi Feifei’s gaze on the stage swept over him, her face coldly fixed on Lin Tian, her beautiful eyes filled with anger.
Lin Tian turned his head to look around and noticed the female auctioneer was indeed staring at him, which he found odd; surely this woman’s hearing couldn’t be that remarkable.
He and Zhou Botong were seated in a corner, not too far from the center stage, but not close either. If it were an ordinary person, they shouldn’t have been able to hear their conversation.
Zhou Botong also noticed this and leaned in to whisper to Lin Tian, "Brother Lin, you probably don’t know, but this woman used to be an auctioneer. She has excellent eyesight and hearing and was quite famous in the auction business. However, after being framed by her peers, Shi Feifei was forced out of the auction industry. She’s pretty impressive though; after leaving the industry, she entered the entertainment circle and even became famous. So, don’t underestimate her or speak ill of her recklessly; she has very keen ears."
"After becoming famous in the entertainment industry, someone asked Shi Feifei to return to host auctions. Her star appeal combined with her professional auctioneering skills made her the perfect choice for an auctioneer. However, she didn’t take any compensation for that auction, only requesting the auction house to drive out the person who had framed her from the profession, essentially "blacklisting" them. That auction house had some influence and actually managed to blacklist that unfortunate peer," Zhou Botong said with a look of admiration on his face.
Lin Tian was quite surprised to hear this, and with a laugh, he said, "So her story is quite legendary."
"Exactly, so it makes sense for Mrs. Xiao to invite her here," Zhou Botong added.
Master Shi Feifei merely glared at Lin Tian without any additional reaction, then turned to face the others.
During this process, the waitstaff began to weave through the seats, distributing auction catalogs to everyone in the hall. A waitress in a cheongsam came to Lin Tian’s table with a tray, on which lay a stack of exquisitely made booklets.
She handed one to each of them, and Lin Tian took his, admiring it carefully. The auction catalog was very beautifully printed, with a dark green cover and abstract patterns resembling the texture of jadeite.
Inside the catalog were listed the items to be auctioned that day, with the first item shockingly being the congratulatory gift from Li Wenrong, a red coral bracelet. This had been Lin Tian’s idea that morning, to auction off the congratulatory gifts and use the proceeds for donations.
Lin Tian greatly admired the efficiency of Xiao Group’s employees; a decision made in the morning resulted in the gift details being printed in the auction catalog by the afternoon.
"Brother Lin, we’re in for a good show right from the start, hehe," Zhou chuckled after flipping through the catalog, his expression sleazy, as if he relished the chaos to come.
Lin Tian was startled, thinking Zhou knew something about the Sun Shadow Association or the Gu Cultivators, and tentatively asked, "What do you mean?"
"Just look at the first and second auction items," Zhou Botong said, deliberately playing coy.
Lin Tian turned to the second page and saw the congratulatory gift from Yun Xiaotian, which was that string of heavenly beads.
He said in surprise, "These are the congratulatory gifts from Li Wenrong and Yun Xiaotian. What’s so strange about that?"
"Brother Lin might not be aware, but wealthy people care a lot about their image, especially the Li Family from the south and the Yun Family from the north of Huaxia. Whenever members of these two families meet, they might appear amicable on the surface, but they’re certainly competing in secret. Tell me, if the gift from one family auctions for a higher price, doesn’t that mean they gain more face?" Zhou Botong explained with a smile.
"Can it really be played out like this? Is it necessary?" Lin Tian scoffed derisively, then added, "They wouldn’t actually bid on their own items, would they? Because if they did, the price would be whatever they dictate."
"Of course not, they might compete, but they can’t do that. It would be laughable to others," Zhou Botong explained.
"There’s certainly some spectacle then. It’s just that the catalog doesn’t print the jade that’s going to be compared with Tianxue Jewelry’s, leaving the suspense until the end," Lin Tian said, not particularly focused on the rivalry between the Li and Yun families. To him, it was just a small sideshow; the main event was yet to come.
"Of course, the grand finale always has to stand out from the rest," Zhou Botong said as if it were obvious.
Lin Tian looked up at the gallery above, where seats near the railings were already occupied, primarily by senior members; the younger generation had only space to stand, with the sole exception of the woman Ou Qinglan, who was seated just like the older generation.
This was a form of acknowledgment, as the elders recognized that she was worthy to sit alongside them, which suggested her achievements were beyond reproach even to the older generation.
Interestingly, the seats of the Li Family and the Yun Family were adjacent, leaving one to wonder if Miss had intentionally arranged it this way, to let the two families fiercely compete on their own.
As Lin Tian and Zhou Botong talked, the distribution of auction catalogs had finished, and the female auctioneer, Shi Feifei, had also picked up the microphone. As her red lips parted slightly, her pleasant voice carried throughout the two floors of the hall.
