Chapter 202: Chapter 201 Sleepless Night
When Lin Tian woke up and looked outside the window, it was already pitch-dark. He was about to check the time on his phone when he remembered that his phone had burnt out, and even the watch Xiao Manxue gave him was gone. For a while, Lin Tian couldn’t figure out how long he had slept and what time it was now.
Without his phone, Lin Tian realized just how dependent people had become on their mobile devices. The last thing they put down before sleeping was their phone, and it was also the first thing they reached for upon waking up.
He felt a bit hungry and thought that as a zombie, he should either suck blood or absorb moonlight to quell his hunger. Since he couldn’t absorb moonlight from the balcony anymore, Lin Tian went outside to try, but it did nothing to ease his hunger. He figured that it was probably because he still retained some human habits. Lin Tian then headed to the kitchen. There was no way the food would have kept warm in May weather; it would have spoiled in half a day.
There was still quite a lot of food left in the fridge, presumably saved by the Miss for her meals. Lin Tian couldn’t be bothered to heat it up and thought he might as well just make do with something cold.
"Lin Tian, what are you doing, eating cold dishes?" a voice came from outside the kitchen. Lin Tian knew it was that girl, Xiao Manxuan, but he had no clue why she was up at such an ungodly hour.
"Second Miss, why aren’t you sleeping so late at night and coming down here?" Lin Tian asked, puzzled. Although the girl was energetic, she wouldn’t normally be awake at this late hour.
Xiao Manxuan’s face turned red, and she spoke softly, "When I got up to go to the... bathroom, I remembered you didn’t have dinner, so I came down to check on you. I didn’t expect to see you here."
The little girl probably meant to say she wanted to pee, but she was too embarrassed and vaguely glossed over it.
"I went to bed too early and woke up in the middle of the night feeling hungry. ’A man can’t be wealthy without windfalls, and a horse can’t get fat without grazing at night,’ right?" Lin Tian joked.
"Hehe, the horses I ride don’t eat at this hour. You’re really an odd horse. Let me ride you someday to see what’s so special about you," Xiao Manxuan teased, laughing along with the joke.
Ride me, this horse? Lin Tian’s thoughts immediately went to Zhou Botong and his wife, and his mind took a slightly wicked turn. The little girl was a true knight, but he wondered how strong her combat skills were.
She snapped back to reality and realized the double entendre in her words. Her pretty face instantly flushed a deep red, spreading all the way to her ears. The atmosphere ripened with a strange and charming sentiment amidst the silence.
Looking from inside the kitchen outwards, Xiao Manxuan was standing at the entrance, with the light from behind casting her in an angelic silhouette. Lin Tian stood against the light, staring at the little girl somewhat mesmerized.
Xiao Manxuan looked like a fairy who had descended to earth, radiating a light even from behind, but Lin Tian believed in one fact: even if there were fairies in this world, they wouldn’t necessarily be more beautiful than Xiao Manxuan.
The little girl also noticed Lin Tian’s gaze drifting over her, turning circles around her, and felt a sense of covert triumph. Attracting the attention of this scoundrel was not an easy feat.
"I... I’ll heat up the food for you. You look pretty clueless," Xiao Manxuan said softly, breaking the silence.
She felt that if things continued this way, something might happen—something she half-anticipated yet also feared—so she hurriedly looked for something to do to divert her attention.
"Alright, I’ll let you do it," Lin Tian said, snapping out of it. The little girl was still shy; if he pushed it too far, she might just run away.
Xiao Manxuan operated the kitchen appliances with familiarity, not like a wealthy young lady, but more like a simple and honest girl. Indeed, she was capable in both social settings and domestic chores, but all these achievements had to be credited to Mrs. Xiao’s excellent upbringing, as she had fully inherited Mrs. Xiao’s diligent and virtuous traits.
In modern society, many girls don’t even know how to cook a meal. In fact, men don’t necessarily expect women to be able to do laundry and cook; they just want to know if the women have the heart to do so. Not knowing how to cook, yet unwilling to learn for their man, they refuse to make even such a small effort. Yet, they dare to speak of love every day—that just shows there’s a problem with their thinking.
"If you meet a girl willing to do laundry and cook for you, you should cherish her." That’s a popular saying online these days, because there aren’t many girls like that anymore.
Suddenly, Lin Tian thought of something. The Xiao sisters had both done laundry for him and cooked meals. Did that mean he should treasure them well?
"Second Miss, let me tie an apron on you. It would be a pity to get oil stains on such a pretty nightgown," Lin Tian said thoughtfully after watching for a while.
"Mm..." Xiao Manxuan let out a soft hum, audible only to herself, but Lin Tian’s sharp hearing caught it.
He reached for the apron hanging on the hook. The apron seemed to be bought by the ’little girl’, resembling a maid outfit from an anime. Lin Tian imagined her in the nightgown and maid apron, like a scene straight out of an anime.
Lin Tian turned around, holding the apron, approached Xiao Manxuan, inhaled the fragrance of her hair, and proceeded to hang the apron on her and tied it up.
"Cough cough..." A sudden coughing from outside the door startled both Lin Tian and Xiao Manxuan.
Lin Tian turned around to find that it was Miss Xiao. Damn it, he was so fixated on the beauty before him that he didn’t notice the "enemy" approaching. He and Xiao Manxuan quickly separated. If he dared to keep his hand around the little girl’s slender waist, with Miss Xiao’s temper, she would definitely blow up. A drama might unfold again with an Ancient Martial Artist battling a zombie.
But why should he back off? He had done nothing wrong. Although the atmosphere was quite fitting for romance, he still considered himself a pure man, Lin Tian thought innocently.
"Miss, do you walk without making a sound?" Lin Tian said somewhat irritably, because Miss Xiao’s approach seemed too much like she was on guard against a pervert, though he inwardly wished he could be a bit more lecherous.
He only realized after speaking that Miss Xiao was barefoot, not wearing any shoes. Plus, as an Ancient Martial Artist, no wonder she moved silently. Not only was she shoeless, but she was also dressed in the same nightgown as Xiao Manxuan. However, when compared, Miss Xiao’s figure was slightly superior.
Damn it, you two sisters are torturing me tonight, aren’t you? Lin Tian wailed internally, lamenting how unfair it was for a novice guy to be tormented so immorally by the heavens.
"Lin Tian, go outside. If you want to eat, wait outside; don’t get any funny ideas," Xiao Manxue, being the older sister, quickly sent Lin Tian out with his inappropriate thoughts.
Helpless, Lin Tian had to leave the kitchen, watching the two sisters dressed in nightgowns working in the kitchen, their images as good wives and diligent mothers even dimming the evening light. Lin Tian comforted himself by thinking such a privilege was not something everyone could enjoy. Be content.
Leaving the kitchen, Lin Tian went to the living room. His heart stirred, and as he looked upstairs, he saw a beautiful figure in silk pajamas disappear at the end of the corridor.
Was Mrs. Xiao also unable to sleep? What was she doing up? Lin Tian was taken aback, then could only sigh to himself that in the Xiao Family villa tonight, sleep would elude everyone.
