Chapter 163: 002: Wedding
Packing his belongings, Lynch headed to the Tower early the next morning for reporting.
Although high-level apprentices had the privilege of freely entering and leaving the Dark Forest, unlike middle and low-level apprentices who had to act with caution, they were still required to report to the Tower every time they left. Departing without permission would lead to punishment.
What was supposed to be a simple report turned into something more when the wizard in charge learned that Lynch was heading to a region in the Human World and suddenly assigned him a task.
"An investigative task?"
The wizard Decara nodded, saying, "Yes. The region you’re heading to happens to be within the range of an unusual occurrence. I need you to make a trip there and find out what kind of tricks those Black Wizards are up to this time."
According to Decara, the Human World had recently shown strange activity from the Black Wizards in a certain area.
It seemed that a human city-state was surrounded by Black Wizards, allowing entry but forbidding exit.
Any activity by the Black Wizards needed strict monitoring by the White Witch Domain. With such an unknown event occurring, it was crucial to uncover the Black Wizards’ intent.
Lynch asked, "Where exactly is this place?"
Decara replied, "Gwodis City in the Ramos Duchy of the Gray Witch Domain. The area has been sealed off by a Black Wizard Apprentice from the Shadow Swamp named Diego."
Lynch froze. "Who did you say?"
Decara gave him a puzzled look. "Diego, why?"
Diego?
The Diego from the Shadow Swamp?
...
A few days later, in Frost Snow Town in the Putan Kingdom.
The sky was as clear as a polished blue silk. A few white clouds floated leisurely, with sunlight piercing through the sparse clouds, bathing the tranquil town below.
The plaza before the hall was carefully arranged into a wedding venue.
Surrounded by lush, verdant trees, long tables and wooden benches were placed under their shade, covered with pristine white tablecloths. Various delicacies and beverages were laid out, filling the air with enticing aromas.
Every resident of the town had been invited, and they were now gathered here, enjoying the food while watching the wedding.
"Dong! Dong!"
The bells of the hall rang melodiously as the bride and groom gracefully walked toward the hall.
The groom wore a finely tailored dark robe, a golden belt around his waist, and gleaming leather boots. His steady and confident steps matched the radiant smile on his face, eyes brimming with hope and determination for the future.
Following him was the bride, clad in a snow-white wedding gown embroidered with golden patterns that shimmered like the brightest stars in the night sky. She wore a wreath crown on her head and held a bouquet of fresh flowers, her steps light and elegant, like a princess stepping out of a fairy tale.
The blacksmith Brook exclaimed in admiration, "Absolutely stunning. She’s just like a princess from a fairy tale!"
After a pause, he turned to the young man sharing his table and said, "Would you believe me if I told you this family used to be slaves under the Bayn family? No joke. Their youngest son used to be one of my playmates."
The young man took a sip of barley wine from the oaken cup on the table, glanced at Brook with amusement, and said, "I’ve heard a bit about it."
Brook then began recounting the legendary tale of the Valen family to the young man.
From their youngest son being taken in as a student by a scholar who visited Frost Cold Town from the Royal Capital, to the eldest son Gerald rescuing the Lord’s youngest daughter, Selena, and being granted a surname and trained as a knight, and later being bestowed a farm and knightly title...
Everything seemed like a story straight out of a minstrel’s ballad.
"...Eventually, Knight Gerald married Miss Selena, and their children are all grown now. Look, that little girl over there is their daughter," Brook said, pointing to a young girl trailing behind the newlyweds.
"What do you think? Isn’t it remarkable?" Brook asked, his red, ruddy nose puffing as he turned to face the young man.
"Indeed," the young man nodded.
Brook continued, "The only pity is that their youngest son was never found."
"He was supposedly taken to the Royal Capital by the scholar, but it was like he disappeared entirely. He’s never returned all these years and is said to have traveled the world with his teacher. Nobody knows where he went."
"He must feel so carefree. Doesn’t he realize how much his parents worry about him?"
The young man paused mid-motion, his hand holding the wine cup. "Their parents... were always worried?"
Brook replied, "What parents wouldn’t be concerned for their children?"
"In the past, when the weather was good, you could often see Mr. and Mrs. Valen lingering at the edge of town, gazing into the distance as if they could summon their youngest son back just by looking far enough."
"After the eldest son became a knight, the youngest became the focus of their thoughts. Over the years, Knight Gerald searched everywhere, even hiring people to look for clues in the Royal Capital, but nothing ever came of it."
"When the Valen couple passed away, their final words were to find that child."
Brook sighed deeply, saying, "Where did that child go? So many years without so much as a single visit."
The young man remained silent.
Brook shook his head and said, "Alright, let’s not talk about this anymore. By the way, I didn’t catch your name. Which family are you from? I don’t recall seeing you around here before."
The young man responded briefly, "My name is Lynch. I’m an outsider."
With that, he placed his oaken cup down and stood up to leave.
"Lynch?"
Brook mulled it over for a moment, his expression faltering slightly as something faintly stirred in his mind. "Lynch?"
But after a moment of thought, he quickly shook his head. "It must just be a coincidence."
His memories of his childhood playmate from twenty years ago were already vague. Besides, the young man before him appeared to be only seventeen or eighteen years old. How could there be any connection?
...
In Frost Snow Town’s cemetery,
Lynch knelt before the ’parents’ grave, gently removing the fallen leaves and dead branches from it.
His parents had passed away three winters ago, peacefully with no illness or suffering, purely from natural causes.
Human lives were fleeting, especially in this backward era. Without tapping into transcendent strength, the average lifespan of ordinary humans was only forty or fifty years. His parents, who had lived into their sixties, had already achieved longevity in this world.
At one time, Lynch had hesitated, wondering whether to use transcendent powers to extend his family’s time. But after much contemplation, he ultimately gave it up.
It was not feasible.
The cost of transcendent power was extraordinarily high. He was not someone like Avery, from a family of endless resources. Even if he exhausted all his efforts to provide his parents with some extraordinary transformation, it would only buy them a little extra time. In the end, parting was inevitable.
Since he couldn’t change it, he decided it was better to learn how to accept it early.
The Wizard’s Road was like this. From the moment he stepped onto the path of transcendence, it was destined that he would have to sever ties with everything in the secular world—parents, siblings, and all loved ones. One by one, they would leave him.
This path was one he would have to walk alone.
"Who are you?"
"Why are you in my family’s graveyard?"
At that moment, an innocent voice called out. Lynch turned his head and saw a little girl of about seven or eight standing before him.
Her small face was tightly drawn, and her beautiful eyes were filled with wariness.
