Chapter 159: 034: Chaos and Order
As Lynch gradually interacted more with Wizard Somda, he came to learn more about his mentor.
He was a very focused person.
Once he got into something, he would immerse himself completely as if he couldn’t stop, going without rest or sleep.
Ever since entering this particular space, Lynch had spent most of his time watching him at that enormous clock. Either drafting blueprints and calculating formulas near the clock or hammering away with various tools and parts on the clock face itself.
Whether Lynch was meditating, studying, or simply passing by, he would always see Somda there, as though he never took a moment’s pause.
Lynch couldn’t help but quip, "Mentor, don’t you need to rest? Your dedication is a bit too much!"
Little did Lynch expect Somda to counter, "Shouldn’t I be asking you this question instead?"
Somda looked at Lynch with an expression of utter disbelief and said, "When I started drawing the blueprints, I saw you meditating over there. By the time I finished drafting and began calculating formulas, you were *still* meditating there. Hey, kid, are you sure *you* don’t need rest?"
Lynch shrugged and replied, "I’m used to it."
"Hahaha!"
Somda burst into laughter. "Well, it looks like I’m used to it too."
In some ways, their temperaments in this regard were quite similar. Lynch was utterly absorbed in meditation and learning, while Somda was entirely preoccupied with his alchemy device. Each had their own path and remained unwavering in their devotion.
Of course, Somda wasn’t always so rigid. Occasionally, he would chat with Lynch about things unrelated to magic.
Especially gossip.
"Hey, do you have a girlfriend?" he asked casually one day while eating.
After thinking for a moment, Lynch replied, "Sort of."
"Tell me her name. I’ll divine for you two, see if you’re compatible or not," Somda said.
Lynch twitched the corner of his mouth, "... ..."
Under the magic system, there was indeed a branch dedicated to destiny divination, categorized under the spiritual system. But using divination for *this*? Well, Lynch was hearing about it for the first time.
He responded, "Avery Karina Tavendish."
"Tavendish?"
Somda’s face revealed surprise. He scrutinized Lynch up and down. "I didn’t expect you, this little Muggle, to have some skill after all... Alright, now think about that girl’s image in your head. I’ll take a look at what she looks like."
Though puzzled, Lynch still went ahead, recalling moments he had spent with Avery.
Somda raised his hand and gently swiped through the air. Dots of starlight suddenly emerged from his body, silently gathering in the air to form Avery’s portrait.
Lynch was stunned: What kind of magic is this?
Somda stared at Avery’s image and nodded repeatedly. "Not bad, not bad. Kid, you’ve got good taste."
After a pause, he asked, "Slept together yet?"
Lynch was speechless, "That’s a private matter, isn’t it?"
Somda replied matter-of-factly, "As your mentor, it’s my responsibility to care about everything concerning my apprentices."
Lynch rolled his eyes: You’re just trying to listen to gossip, don’t give me that nonsense...
He shook his head. "No."
Somda gave a peculiar look. "Not yet? What’s the deal? Is this Tavendish girl just playing with you, or are you so insecure as a Muggle that you’re too timid to act?"
Somda adopted a somewhat arrogant tone as he admonished, "My students must never be cowards! Forget this little patch of ruins—look at the entire Third Wizard World. You won’t find many who deserve to make you bow your head!"
Lynch found the old man truly odd. On one hand, he was just an ordinary wizard. On the other, his inventions were indeed astounding, and his arrogance seemed limitless...
Could he actually be some sort of hidden figure?
Lynch shook his head again. "No."
After a pause, he explained, "We don’t stay in touch often; both of us are busy. The last time I saw her was ten years ago."
Somda’s lips twitched. "Ten years..."
"Kid, you’re probably being strung along!"
Lynch shrugged. "I don’t know. She said she had to go into the ’Magic Mirror’ to cultivate, which would take ten years."
This question never really troubled Lynch. Whether Avery was sincere or just toying with him didn’t matter much—it was fine as long as it didn’t disrupt his cultivation.
"Magic Mirror?"
Somda froze for a moment, as if recalling something. "Ah, I see now."
He explained, "It seems your little girlfriend is highly valued within her family. She must have been selected as the next successor for cultivation. Otherwise, they wouldn’t have entrusted her with the Magic Mirror—a resource of such significance."
Lynch nodded. "Sounds about right."
Somda continued, "Judging by the timeline, the next millennial cycle outside should be nearing. This is the perfect time to put her into secluded training—looks like they’re preparing her for the Blood Moon Day baptism."
Blood Moon Day?
Lynch couldn’t recall how many times he had heard this term already.
He couldn’t help but ask, "Mentor, what is this Blood Moon Day... Could you explain it to me, or are you unable to?"
Somda looked at him quizzically. "Why would I be unable to?"
Lynch said, "I heard there’s a rule in the Tower not to disclose it to apprentices..."
Somda scoffed. "What nonsense."
He shook his head. "Relax. The rules don’t constrain me here."
After a pause, he elaborated, "Blood Moon Day refers to a celestial phenomenon in this world. Every thousand years, the moon in the sky turns blood red. That day is called the Blood Moon by wizards of this realm."
Lynch asked curiously, "What happens when the Blood Moon arrives?"
Somda replied, "War."
Lynch froze.
Somda explained, "The White Wizards and Black Wizards of the Ancient Ruins have established a rule. On each millennial Blood Moon Day, a war will take place. The outcome of the war dictates whether the order of the White Wizards or the chaos of the Black Wizards will prevail over these lands for the next millennium."
Lynch was stunned.
Suddenly it all clicked. "So, the Dark Era recorded in history also ended in this same way?"
"Exactly."
Somda nodded. "In the previous millennium, the White Wizards lost the war, so their orderly rules were replaced by the chaotic rules of the Black Wizards for a thousand years. That lasted until the last millennium, when the White Wizards won the Blood Moon Battle and restored order for this current thousand-year cycle."
"Order and chaos."
"These are the core conflicts of this land. When that day arrives, every apprentice must make their choice."
