Chapter 498: Chapter 488: Homemade Sandwiches
"Hurry up, are all your clothes on? We need to leave now." Shen Yunfang came out of the bedroom, donning a large-brimmed sun hat and carrying a homemade backpack filled with essentials for the kids like tissue paper, water bottles, and cooling oil.
"Just a moment, wait another five minutes." Shuanzi’s voice came from the kitchen.
Shen Yunfang looked at the closed kitchen door, curious about what the kids were up to inside, since they had been there since breakfast.
"Woo woo..."
"Taxue, were you kicked out too?" Shen Yunfang petted Taxue’s big head in empathy, sharing the feeling of being left out.
"Woo woo..." Taxue nuzzled Shen Yunfang’s hand vigorously, acting coquettishly. The dog felt neglected, as its young master had new playmates and only the female master seemed to care.
"Come on, let’s sneak a peek at what Pangpang and the others are doing, shall we? But don’t bark, okay?" Shen Yunfang patted Taxue’s head and then approached the kitchen door, trying to push it open just a crack as quietly as possible.
"Mom’s here." Manman, who wasn’t able to be of much help and was just wandering around, spotted Shen Yunfang peering through the door and shouted it out.
Shen Yunfang realized her spying had failed before it even started, having been caught red-handed, so she boldly pushed the kitchen door wide open. "What are you all doing? Why aren’t you dressed yet? We have to leave now, didn’t we say we’re going to the field today?"
The "field" mentioned here refers to Shen Yunfang’s experimental farm.
The little friends busying themselves on the stove were on high alert, and upon hearing Manman’s shout, they turned and tried to hide what was behind them.
"We’re going, we still have to help Second Aunt pick flowers." Shuanzi was the first to cry out.
"Then why are you dawdling? The sun is going to be overhead before we know it." Shen Yunfang walked in and peeked behind them, "What are you doing so secretively?"
"Nothing..."
"We are making sandwiches." Manman replied loudly.
Everyone facepalmed; this was indeed a case of ’helped by Xiu He, thwarted by Xiu He’. Manman the little troublemaker, what country exactly did she belong to?
"Oh, you’re making sandwiches? Let me see how well you’ve done." Shen Yunfang’s interest was piqued when her daughter snitched, and she was curious as her own two children aside, the others had only tried sandwiches for the first time yesterday morning. Were they already attempting to make their own because they enjoyed it so much?
The children reluctantly shifted aside, revealing the countertop behind them.
"Auntie, we didn’t mean to waste bread, but somehow, when we put things on it, they just turned out like this." Jiajia, the main hands-on participant, hurriedly explained, worried Second Aunt might get angry.
Shen Yunfang looked with amusement at the countertop filled with sandwiches of varying sizes and irregular shapes... well, let’s suppose they are sandwiches; the fillings were bizarre. If she wasn’t mistaken, one seemed to contain the leftover millet porridge from that morning. Was it really possible to put that into a sandwich? She had to hand it to the kids for creativity.
Shitou, embarrassed, watched as his Second Aunt examined the sandwich he had made, "I thought it’d be a waste to throw the leftover porridge away, so I tried putting it in."
Shen Yunfang couldn’t bear to discourage the child, so she just nodded, "Your idea is very good, but since bread absorbs water, wouldn’t it soak up all the water from the porridge and then turn soggy?" In fact, the bread had already turned soggy, and she figured it was probably impossible to even pick it up.
"Mommy, mommy, did I do well?" Seeing that his mother had started to critique, Pangpang hurriedly showed his creation to his mother, hoping to receive her praise.
Shen Yunfang looked at the two pieces of bread in his hands filled with ham, peanuts, fried eggs, and she could vaguely see two pieces of milk candy with the wrappers removed inside. Her son had sandwiched all his favorite foods inside.
"Hmm, not bad, very creative, and with plenty of room for development," Shen Yunfang pondered for a moment before giving such feedback.
The other children then showed their creations to their aunt, and Shen Yunfang patiently commented on each one. Although it would definitely make them late to leave the house, the children’s enthusiasm and passion were rare, and as a parent, she had to support it. Besides, it didn’t matter where they played, right? What difference did it make what they played? If worse came to worst, they just wouldn’t go out today.
After being evaluated by their aunt/mother, the children placed their creations into a prepared basket. They had initially made sandwiches for a picnic outing, and now that they were done, of course, they still wanted to go out and play.
Seeing that the children had sandwiches for lunch, Shen Yunfang also put down her backpack, washed her hands, and made a few standard and delicious sandwiches for herself and Manman. She put them into the basket for Shitou to carry, and then the group finally left the house.
"Hey, what a coincidence, I was just about to go to your place. What’s all this? Are you taking the kids out to play?" Ma Liguo saw Shen Yunfang leading a troop of children out of the building from afar and hurried over.
"Liguo, why have you come? Is there something you need from me? Since there’s nothing pressing, I was planning to take the kids out for some fun." Shen Yunfang motioned for the children to greet Uncle Ma.
A line of six children, each wearing a straw hat on their head, looked quite hilarious at a glance.
"Hello, Uncle Ma/Dad." The children, well-behaved as they were, greeted the adult promptly.
Ma Chaofan had been coming over from morning to evening these past days to eat and play with the kids. If his parents didn’t come to pick him up at night, he’d just stay over at the Shen Family. So seeing his own father wasn’t easy for him.
"Ah, good, good, all good kids. But when you go out, you must listen to Aunt Shen, ok?" Ma Liguo casually reminded them.
"Got it." The children answered in unison.
"Liguo, what is it?" Shen Yunfang waited until he had finished greeting the children before asking.
It was Ma Liguo’s working hours, so if it weren’t important, he wouldn’t come to find her at home.
"Yes, there is something. I just received a call from that Joseph. He said that Joseph had some matters he wanted to discuss with you and is taking today’s flight over here, hoping you can make time to meet with him tomorrow night." Ma Liguo relayed the information, grateful that someone on Joseph’s end could speak Chinese; otherwise, he wouldn’t have understood a word of the bird language over the phone.
"Oh, Joseph’s coming?" Shen Yunfang wondered why Joseph would be coming, "Alright, then tell your wife that I’ll bring the children over to you tomorrow afternoon, and you look after them in the evening." This was not a question, but a statement.
This holiday she had practically rescued Ma Liguo and his wife; Ma Chaofan was about to grow roots at her house. Ma Liguo and his wife were reliving their days as a twosome at home, their faces beaming as if enjoying a second spring.
"No problem, my wife and I will watch the children tomorrow evening," Ma Liguo agreed readily.
