Chapter 415: Chapter 405: Let’s go home and chat
"Is that so? Xiu didn’t mention it to me!" Aunt Shen said with an expression that said she didn’t have a clue.
She genuinely didn’t know. Having lived her entire life in the countryside, this old lady was in the big city for the first time. It was already quite an achievement that she hadn’t gotten lost, let alone knowing anything about the neighborhood committee or streets.
Shen Yunfang didn’t join in. If your daughter hasn’t told you about these things, what could she be thinking? It was something Yunxiu and her husband needed to ponder on their own.
"I guess Xiu might not know either," Uncle Shen said, frowning.
Parents always unconsciously make excuses for their children’s mistakes, which Shen Yunfang understood. Whether Yunxiu knew about this matter or not, she couldn’t be certain. However, she remembered that Yunxiu had been back in the city for over two years now. Maybe she really wasn’t familiar with the area yet.
"Right, surely Xiu doesn’t know either. You see, this city is just troublesome; it’s so hard to find your way around here," Aunt Shen complained.
"Haha, Auntie, the place here is much bigger than our village, and there are many more people too. So, when you want to find something, you can’t just keep to yourself; you have to ask around. If you really can’t find it, you should go to the police station. They have public security officers there who will definitely be able to help you," Shen Yunfang advised them the simplest method, albeit feeling slightly embarrassed for potentially increasing the workload of the officers.
"Oh no, there’s no need for that; the police station isn’t somewhere you just walk into. If we ended up at the police station, by the time the word gets back to our village, your Uncle and I might as well stop showing our faces," Aunt Shen quickly waved her hands. The mere thought of a police station scared her, and she absolutely refused to go in.
Shen Yunfang couldn’t help but laugh at her reaction. Manman, sitting in the front seat, was a bit confused, still not quite understanding the conversation, but Pangpang in the backseat understood and giggled along with her mother, covering her mouth.
"Your children are growing up very well," Aunt Shen remarked as she looked at the playful Pangpang and the adorable Manman in the backseat. Her daughter also had a son. Yet, the last time she saw him, when he returned during their meal, she was startled. The grandson she had watched grow from an infant looked like a little beggar, ragged and with snot hanging from his nose. He was never well-groomed even back home. At first, she thought all city kids must be like that, but now seeing the clean and tidy Pangpang and Manman, she realized the Fang Family must not have been taking proper care of her grandson. Even the child’s mother—that is, her own daughter—must not have cared much either; otherwise, her grandson wouldn’t be in such a state.
"They are quite obedient, but they do love to eat," Shen Yunfang had heard such comments countless times. Her own children indeed looked good, combining the best features of both her and Li Hongjun. Even at such a young age, it was clear they would grow up to be handsome and beautiful. Of course, some of this was a mother’s pride. But it was true that wherever she went, people complimented her children. Shen Yunfang couldn’t deny her children’s good looks, so she modestly pointed out some trivial flaws instead.
"Which child doesn’t love to eat? When you were that age, you loved it too," Uncle Shen suddenly chimed in.
"Exactly, like Dad said, we are growing, so we need to eat a bit more," Pangpang protested from the back. He wasn’t gluttonous, oh no; he was diligently growing.
"Good, then you eat more and grow up quickly. Then you won’t need Mum to carry you anymore; you’re getting too heavy," Shen Yunfang teased him.
Uncle Shen, seeing his niece and her children joking lovingly, became somewhat fixated.
"Old man, what’s the matter?" Why did you stop all of a sudden? Aunt Shen quickly checked on her husband, worried that the cold these past days might have affected him.
"It’s nothing. Let’s go," Uncle Shen didn’t elaborate, only he knew that the sight of his niece interacting with her children had reminded him of the way his daughter shouted and ordered her son around. The difference was striking. Even though he was no great philosopher, he felt that his niece’s approach was correct, the way to raise good children.
The group soon reached the entrance of Shen Yunfang’s apartment building, where Taxue, upon seeing home, dashed up the stairwell.
"Uncle, Auntie, we’re here. Let’s head upstairs." Shen Yunfang picked her children off the bike, locked it, and led the way up.
When they reached the third floor, indeed, the door across from hers was ajar. Sun Yi stood in the doorway, peering through a narrow opening.
Yeah, she’s afraid of Taxue, so when Taxue is around, she’s not as arrogant.
"Oh, Aunt Sun, are you going out?" Shen Yunfang asked with a feigned smile.
"No choice, I just saw you came back and wanted to come out to see. What’s the matter, who are these two behind you?" Aunt Sun was not one to miss out on gossip even in such situations.
"Ah, this is my uncle and aunt, they came over from our hometown to visit me. Well, Aunt Sun, I won’t chat with you for now, we’re going inside." Shen Yunfang opened her own front door and let her uncle and aunt enter the house before she called out "Taxue" just before closing the door.
Taxue dashed through the crack of the door into the house, and then the door slammed shut.
Once inside, Shen Yunfang fetched slippers from the shoe cabinet at the entrance for the old couple, urging them to change into them.
Uncle Shen and Aunt Shen were reluctant to change shoes, but in the end, they took off their footwear, revealing the patches on their socks under the fluorescent light with no attempt to hide them.
"You city folk sure are picky," mumbled Aunt Shen.
Only then did Shen Yunfang realize she might have inadvertently done something wrong. She didn’t mean anything by it; she just thought the outside was cold, and after the old folks had been squatting outside all day, it would be nice for them to remove their shoes and warm up at home.
Since the shoes were already off, it seemed even worse to ask them to put them back on, so she quickly moved on.
Shen Yunfang poured them each a cup of hot water, letting them drink to warm up.
"Yunfang, you live here now, huh? This house is really nice," said Aunt Shen, sitting on the sofa with a certain restraint, yet unable to resist her curiosity as she looked around.
"It’s not that much better than anyone else’s, just that we don’t have a lot of stuff, so it looks tidier," said Shen Yunfang modestly. True, her home wasn’t cluttered with belongings, but she had arranged and cleaned it with great care.
"Can I take a look inside the rooms?" Aunt Shen became restless, having never been in a tall building in her life. This was her first time seeing such a house and she was truly fascinated by it.
"Sure, have a look around," Shen Yunfang couldn’t possibly refuse.
With Shen Yunfang’s permission, Aunt Shen stood up, pushed the doors to several rooms open, and went for a walk-through. She was especially meticulous in the bathroom, and the exclamations she made were the loudest there.
"This is really something else, the city and our hometown are truly different. This is much better than the latrine back home." At the very least, you didn’t have to freeze your butt off in the winter going to the bathroom.
Uncle Shen was curious too, but he was more reserved. Every time Aunt Shen exclaimed in surprise, he just leaned forward slightly and took a few peeks.
"Hey, that’s enough, don’t act like a country bumpkin, sit down already, don’t make Yunfang laugh at us," Uncle Shen couldn’t stand his wife’s behavior after a point and hurriedly called her over to sit down properly.
"What are you talking about, Yunfang is family, what’s there to laugh at?"
