Chapter 374: Chapter 364 Iron-blooded Man’s Mother
"What’s going on, your dad hurt his leg?" Shen Yunfang stopped what she was doing and looked at Li Hongjun, asking.
"Yeah, my older brother called today, said my dad accidentally broke his leg while working a few days ago, and my mom asked me to come back home." Li Hongjun looked at his wife as he spoke, feeling both anxious and deeply helpless. His leave had already been approved, and he was supposed to take the train next week to take his wife and kids to the Capital, to find a place for them to settle down, and to sort things out, like who would look after the kids. But now, he had received a sudden phone call from his hometown that his father had broken his leg and needed him to return.
Both places needed him, and he was torn.
"How is it now?" Shen Yunfang asked with concern. What she really wanted to ask was, "Is it true? Isn’t it another trick your mom is playing?" But she swallowed those words in the end.
Although she didn’t exactly like Li’s family, they were still her husband’s parents, and it was only right to show some concern.
"My older brother didn’t make it clear on the phone, I also don’t know exactly what the situation is." Li Hongjun frowned. With his personality, he hated such unclear situations. But at that time, his brother sounded hesitant and evasive. He had once thought that it was a new trick by his mother to ask him for money, but considering his father’s character, he shouldn’t be able to fool around with his mother.
Besides, no matter what the situation was, now that he had leave and knew his father had broken his leg, he had to go back regardless. It was just that it was also time for Yunfang to report in, which made things complicated.
"I see, then you should go back home and see what’s happening. If there’s nothing wrong, that would be best, but if there is, you won’t have any regrets," Shen Yunfang was very understanding.
No matter how Li’s father, Li Hongjun, and Qiu Shuping treated her, they were Li Hongjun’s parents, the ones who gave birth to him. When they were sick, it was Li Hongjun’s duty to visit them.
Li Hongjun had always known his wife to be the most sensible. Other women might have cried and refused to let their husbands go, but his wife wouldn’t. Oh, his silly wife.
"Why don’t you take the kids with me back home first? If it’s nothing serious, we can go to the Capital together after that?" Li Hongjun asked.
"No way," Shen Yunfang replied without a second thought, "What do I go back there for? If I went back, your mom would probably get even more upset. Besides, we only have a week’s leave. Just following your plan, we’d spend three to four days on the train alone; we wouldn’t have enough time. There’s no need for that hassle. I’ll go to the Capital with the kids by myself, and once we’re settled, I’ll give you a call."
If their family of four went back home only to see the elderly for a moment and then left, Qiu Shuping would slander their reputations. Why bother? If she didn’t go back, whatever Li Hongjun said, being her son, wouldn’t be as critical, right?
Besides, after the whole trouble of traveling, once they reached the Capital, Li Hongjun’s holiday would be almost over. What would be the point then?
"No, I’m not comfortable with you traveling alone with two kids." Li Hongjun insisted on disagreeing. Their children, one barely two and a half years old and the other just over a year old, both needed looking after. How could his wife manage the kids alone while also dealing with luggage during the journey?
"Hmph," Shen Yunfang gave him a sidelong glance, "Are you worried about your children, or are you worried about me?"
Sheesh, no need to think about it; Li Hongjun was definitely more concerned about his daughter. She had already become an old mother and wasn’t exactly favored.
"You woman, I’m talking about serious matters, and all you do is joke around. Alright, stop packing and go to sleep." Li Hongjun stretched out his hand, pulling her onto the bed and holding her down.
"Hey, what are you doing? I was almost done packing."
The two of them finally convinced each other in the tug-of-war that night.
Li Hongjun was returning home to see Old Man Li, and if there were no issues there, he planned to go directly to the capital to meet up with his wife and the others.
Shen Yunfang took the two kids to the capital, all she needed to do on the train was to look after the children, and once off the train, one of Li Hongjun’s comrades would meet them at the station. Of course, Li Hongjun would make arrangements with his comrade before leaving, and had already tasked him with finding a place to stay; she just needed to ensure her own and the children’s safety.
In fact, Yunfang was somewhat dissatisfied with such arrangements. She was perfectly capable, and had never been afraid to go places before. How was it that after getting married and having children, she became more and more timid and even unreliable in others’ eyes?
Li Hongjun stated that no matter how old, in his eyes he had three children to take care of.
After the couple discussed and agreed on their plans, they bought tickets the next day, Li Hongjun called his comrade in the capital to arrange things for his wife, and on the third day, the family of three set off for the provincial city train station, bags in tow.
"Keep a close eye on the kids and also take care of yourself," Li Hongjun said as he helped stow the luggage on the train. Seeing that the train was about to leave, he quickly gave his final instructions, "If you can’t find anyone when you arrive, don’t just wander off, wait at the police station near the exit, understand? And, you haven’t lost the note I gave you, right? If you really can’t find anyone, call the number on it..."
"I know, I know, now get off, the conductor is hurrying you," Shen Yunfang said, half laughing and half crying. This man had completely turned into a mother hen.
Wasn’t he the one who always loved to act cool? And there were so many people watching them.
"This People’s Liberation Army comrade, don’t worry," an elderly gentleman next to her said with a chuckling smile, "we will surely take good care of your family."
Li Hongjun took that seriously and, with a snap, gave the elder and the people in the carriage a military salute, "Thank you all for taking care of my spouse and children."
At this point, Shen Yunfang wanted to cover her face. This was too much; she still had to be on this train until tomorrow morning.
Urged by the conductor, Li Hongjun finally got off the train, but then it seemed he remembered something and knocked on the window by Yunfang’s seat.
When Shen Yunfang rolled down the window, he said, "If I can’t make it to the capital, remember to call me. Get your department head’s phone number too, understand?"
"Okay, I got it," Yunfang nodded. At this point, she would do anything to reassure him. "Quick, say goodbye to daddy, our train is about to leave."
"Bye-bye, Daddy," Pangpang obediently waved his little hand, saying goodbye to his father outside the window.
"Bye-bye, Daddy," Manman followed suit, but what came out of her mouth was in English.
The train slowly left the station, and Li Hongjun ran after it for a few steps, but ultimately he stopped. He closed his eyes, trying to cool the warmth in them, comforting himself that it was okay, the separation from his wife and children was only temporary, he would soon head to the capital as well, and then he would see them again.
Who could have imagined that a man of iron would have such a tender side when faced with the departure of his wife and children?
Li Hongjun stood silently at the platform for a while, then opened his eyes, his gaze once again firm. He strode towards the train heading for his hometown.
