Chapter 110: Chapter 109: Big City!
"This title of yours seems a bit too long."
In the evening, Teacher Cat returned to her familiar perch, walking along the city streets with Ethan, "Your colleagues might find it inconvenient."
"Everyone at the Reception Bureau is a genius at naming."
Ethan wholeheartedly agreed, but the title was indeed fitting. When he was rated E-level, he adopted Miss Keroy, and when promoted to D-level, he had just accomplished the feat of venturing into polluted zones twice. Besides, the current title is certainly better than being called a chicken farmer.
He has always been easily satisfied.
For example, now, walking with Teacher Cat on the streets of Gear City, he felt relaxed and happy.
This is the big city that people from Ximu Town have longed for—a place where the apartment buildings in residential areas seem to rival Ave’s house. Though the sky was completely dark, the streets remained brightly lit. Despite the swirling smog, it had traces of a modern society.
As expected from its name, Gear City constantly echoed with the sound of rotating axles and wheels. This city is one of the Empire’s important trade hubs, where glimpses of foreign civilization technology can be seen. From a distance, towering buildings can be spotted—one of the two air transport hubs on the Empire’s border. As they conversed, a transport airship slowly glided overhead, soon merging into the night.
Buildings intertwined like clockwork, leaving only a complex street network, extending like veins through the city.
People hurried along the street, a mix of traditional uniformed Firearms Team members and gentlemen in black trench coats, as well as ladies in elegant dresses. To them, life truly starts at night.
Compared to Ximu Town, their attire was far more sophisticated. Shops along the street were adorned with colorful lights powered by energy-storing crystals. Freshly baked bread was neatly arranged in display cabinets instead of being dragged to the street for sale, and greeter girls in black maid dresses smilingly introduced the products to customers.
The pace of life in Gear City was fast, and only at night do residents find some time for themselves.
The cat on Ethan’s shoulder gazed at the people on the street dreamily and suddenly broke the silence, "Sorry."
"Huh? What’s this about now?"
"Can’t accompany you as your girlfriend on a stroll."
Teacher Cat didn’t turn her head, her eyes showing some envy. She saw many couples passionately in love—it seemed the night in Gear City was perfect for them. They sat face-to-face at outdoor tables surrounded by plants and flowers, meticulously selected to remain vibrant even in winter.
Some tables had candles, whose warm flames dispelled the night’s chill. Their soft glow through goblets cast the wine inside into a crystal-clear brilliance, illuminating smiles on faces.
Unfortunately, she couldn’t sit face-to-face with Ethan, as that would only bring trouble. Before long, the Kingdom Army would surround them, and she couldn’t converse with Ethan with others around. She would have to remain silent or meow since generally, cats are not known for talking.
"Then let me take you for a stroll."
Ethan lifted Teacher Cat with both hands, cradling her in his arms. Her paws rested on his arms as her eyes sparkled like those of a driver directing him with small paws, "Let’s go check out that clothing store over there."
During this era, signs prohibiting pets from entering are nonexistent. The store clerk, a stylish young woman, enthusiastically advanced as she saw the cat in Ethan’s arms, her gaze openly fixated on Teacher Cat.
The more this cat clerk looked, the more she liked her, feeling her eyes melt.
This cat was lovely and well-behaved, unlike the stray cats of the city, surviving by hunting rats and eating scraps, smelling pungent up close and quite aggressive, scratching anyone who approached.
The clerk wished she could have such a cat in the store. It would brighten her dull store life by playing with the cat during idle times.
Perhaps realizing her lack of decorum, the clerk cleared her throat and asked, "Sir, are you picking clothes for yourself?"
"No, shopping for my girlfriend; I’m just browsing."
"Alright, feel free to call me if you need any assistance."
Before leaving, the clerk amiably waved at Teacher Cat.
Usually, Teacher Cat was reluctant to respond to strangers, but she was in a good mood today, so she tilted her head and blinked a few times at the clerk.
A sudden gasp was heard as the clerk clutched her chest tightly; her breathing became labored and her face flushed like an apple.
Ethan wasn’t picky about clothing. Before coming here, he mostly bought discounted items online, generally wearing whatever he had at the time—not well-versed in fashion trends. Since he claimed he was shopping for his girlfriend, he naturally sought her opinion. Taking Teacher Cat to a corner, he said quietly, "If you like any clothes, just point, and I’ll know."
"What type of clothes do you like?"
Teacher Cat asked him, looking up.
Honestly, aside from knowing that Ethan is fond of crystal high heels, Teacher Cat had no idea about his preferred style. Back at the academy and during the Seven Council, she wore uniforms and rarely chose clothes herself, especially later. Her identity as a Council member and Saint caused a stir wherever she went, leading her to prefer staying indoors over time.
"Generally, I have none, but..."
Teacher Cat’s question quickened Ethan’s heartbeat, as he unintentionally stumbled upon something sinful in the store, leading to unavoidable daydreams.
"But if it’s that outfit..."
Internally torn, he tried his best to ignore those displayed uniforms.
Ethan’s darting eyes didn’t escape Teacher Cat’s observation. She took a look in that direction, chuckling, "So, you fancy this style, huh? Go ahead and buy it; I’ll wear it for you later."
"Really?"
"It’s no big deal."
Teacher Cat waved her small paws, commanding, "Buy it!"
After discussing 46 humanoid creations of Evil Gods with Ethan, she had long been unperturbed, believing nothing could be harder to accept than octopus-faced beings.
She felt her mindset had significantly transcended, achieving a state of detachment from worldly concerns.
Yet, the store clerk frowned seeing Ethan with the uniform.
"Your girlfriend planning to work at a mansion?"
Such uniforms were meant for maids at noble houses. She lowered her voice, saying, "If it’s Aisoke’s family hiring, better not let her go."
"What happened there?"
Ethan followed up, but really, many interests from this era are beyond comprehension, and he didn’t need to explain.
"A friend suffered abuse there—though alive, she lost her mind."
Not knowing why she disclosed this to a stranger, perhaps it was Teacher Cat’s charm.
She hoped no one else would fall prey, "Anyway, be cautious yourselves."
