Wife of The Demon Prince
Chapter 64: Mutual threat

Chapter 64: Mutual threat

The next day it didn’t take long for Elizabeth to reply. Within hours of sending the letter, the butler came running to Ara’s room, "My lady! Lady Bennett has agreed to meet with you as soon as possible!"

Ara’s lips pulled up, "That’s good."

"But...What did you say to make lady Bennett change her mind so quickly?"

"It’s a secret between lady Bennett and I..." Ara didn’t say anything further.

However, the butler was more pleased than curious, as lady Bennett’s high nosed attitude had changed so quickly. On the first day he went to deliver Ara’s message, he had been ignored by the servants there, but on the second visit, after lady Bennett read the content of the letter, he was treated like a valued guest with respect. He wondered what exactly was written in that letter he delivered?

"Send a servant to lady Bennett, to ask her if she could meet up with me today." Ara Stated.

"Yes. My lady."

Even though Elizabeth agreed to meet her, she still wanted to make it convenient for the lady.

The butler followed Ara’s orders without a question. He was sure the lady knew what she was doing. ’ it’s none of my business.’ He thought.

This time the butler did not visit the Bennett mansion himself, but sent a servant to deliver Ara’s message.

As night fell, the servant finally returned with a reply, "Lady Bennett requests to meet you immediately tonight."

Ara prepared to leave despite it being already late at night, with only today left before the social gathering. She needed Elizabeth’s support as soon as possible.

"I’ll take my leave."

"Alright. Be careful, My lady." The butler saw her off to the carriage.

Elizabeth had requested to meet Ara at the famous parlor in the south, it was a parlor known for the elites, and it has a section suitable for having secret conversations, to put it frankly.

The Boxton carriage halted in front of the parlor, called "The beautiful life."

"We are here, My lady." The coachman informed, Then stepped out to open the door for her, and she stepped out.

"Oh, Thank you." Ara Thanked as she looked up and saw the sign bearing the words, "Welcome to the beautiful life." Before walking into the building. The atmosphere inside was a bit gloomy.

She walked through the narrowed corridor, which was a bit dark. Seeing as she didn’t meet anyone in the hallway, it seemed to be constructed so that visitors wouldn’t run into each other.

As she walked out of the narrow corridor, a faint smell of tobacco filled her senses. She finally came across a man standing behind a desk in the large hall,

"Good evening, My lady. Who are you looking for?" The man greeted with a smile.

"Evening. Am here to meet lady Bennett...is she here?" She asked.

"Yes. She has been waiting for you in the private parlor..." He motioned to her, "Come this way, please."

Ara had never stepped foot in the building before, but the entire place was well structured to perfection than she had expected.

The man guided her inside the deeper part of the building. They finally arrived at an antique door. He pushed it open then motioned for Ara to enter.

Inside the room was a middle-aged woman seated stiffly on the chair as if she was scared the building would fall on her if she moved.

As Ara stepped in, the man closed the door behind her. The two women stared at each other challengingly without a word.

Ara spoke first to break the silent challenge, "Good evening, Lady Bennett...I hope you know who I am and why am here?"

"Of course, I know who you are, Arabella Boxton...The most talked about person in the kingdom these days." Elizabeth’s tone was harsh and filled with sarcasm. The woman looked Ara up and down, then continued to say, "I’m not here for a chit chat with you...How did you know about the things you wrote to me?"

Ara couldn’t honestly answer that question. But smiled, "You’re really a straightforward person, Lady Bennett...And I like that, but you shouldn’t question how I knew, but if I have told anyone your precious secret yet. What do you think?"

The letter Ara had wrote was a short one that says [ I know everything about your hidden relationship, and your hidden daughter.]

In Ara’s previous life. The secret of Lady Bennett came out to light. She had an affair with a man and got pregnant, she had secretly given birth to her child. Elizabeth’s parents had thoroughly covered up the incident, and Elizabeth had married without anyone else knowing about her child. When the secret came out, Elizabeth’s reputation was completely ruined.

"Are you threatening me, lady Boxton?"

"Obviously, Lady Bennett. What does it look like I was doing the whole time?" When Elizabeth didn’t reply, Ara continued unblinkingly, "If you want me to keep my mouth shut about your secret...you will have to do something for me in return."

A frown crossed the woman’s face, "What do you want? Is it money? Name your price...And tell me how you knew about this?"

"I don’t want your money, Lady Bennett..."

"Then what do you want? I don’t trust you. How should I know if you’ve already spread it to people?"

"If I have done that, you’d be the first person to hear of it, don’t you think? Ara questioned. As the woman was the queen of gossip.

Elizabeth pursed her lips at Ara’s question. Her daughter was currently being raised by a nanny in hiding.

In Ara’s previous life. In the future the biological father would show up to take his child, and in the process, Lady Bennett’s secret would be out in public. But this fact could not be revealed to the woman. Ara continued, "I can’t tell you how I knew about this, but if you do me this favor, I’ll take your secret to my grave."

Elizabeth looked reluctant for a moment, but she had no choice as her reputation was on the line, "What do you want me to do?"

Ara’s lips pulled up in a smile, then handed the parchment containing the words she wanted to spread about Claire to the woman, "I want you to spread the words in this parchment."

"...?"

"It’s about Lady Tudor...She has been harboring a grudge against me because she didn’t get the crown she wanted at the grand ball, she went as far as to spread false rumors about me. I wan_"

"You’re asking me to spread false rumors about Lady Tudor?!" Elizabeth’s voice raised in surprise.

"And what made you think it was a false rumor?"

"...?"

Ara continued in a colder tone, "Since when did it matter what’s true in this society? After all, haven’t you spread a lot of false rumors too in this kingdom? ...have you ever stayed to find out if what you spread was true before you spread them?"

Ara had no intention in explaining her misfortunes in details. Immoral people never revealed their truth in society. Truth was made by power, it was the same now. Elizabeth would never had come if Ara hadn’t threatened to reveal her secret, and it was also the reason she was here before Ara.

There was one lesson Ara had learnt from her previous life.

_A man without power, can never change anything because the truth doesn’t always serve everyone!_

In Ara’s previous life, her family were framed. eventually, her whole family were wiped out and hanged on a tree for all to see as a punishment for something they never committed. She had dreamt of revenge, but failed as Cornell killed her in the end.

Anger and justice made no difference, and soon Ara realized, there was nothing like truth and justice in this society. If you want everything to go your way, you need to be in charge and powerful.

Elizabeth who had held a stiff demeanor, suddenly bursts into laughter,

"Ha ha ha ha!"

Her sudden outburst caused Ara to look at her with a questioning expression. What was funny?

Elizabeth didn’t bother to restrain her mirth, and continued to say in amusement, "I never thought you were this smart, Lady Ara...I must say, You have a good understanding of how the society works. You’re right, the truth doesn’t matter, it’s what we make that is real."

"Then are you in for a deal?"

After a small paused, Elizabeth nodded, "Deal...I’ll Do this, it will not be difficult for me to spread."

"Thank yo_"

"Hold on! It’s too early for you to thank me yet. If you don’t keep your word and reveal my secret...I’ll make sure to bring you down with me, understood?"

"Are you threatening me now, Lady Bennett?"

"Yes. Just like you did, Lady Boxton...If you think you can make me do things for you because you know my secret...Then You’re wrong, let me make this clear...I also can ruin you in a snap of a finger."

Ara nodded, "You don’t have to go that far, because I’ll keep to my words."

Ara wasn’t planning to further blackmail the woman with her secret, as she knew how Elizabeth could ruin someone with her connections around the kingdom.

Ara stared at the woman in front of her. Elizabeth was clever and brilliant, but she had met with a wrong man. The father of her child, was in a word, a lowlife. He was a gambler and a drunkard. There was no telling how such high woman and such a man got involved before marriage.

When Elizabeth’s hidden secret came to light, she admitted to all her past sins and chose to kill her daughter, and later committed suicide, fearing the gossip would affect the Bennett’s household. However, after her death, her husband Louis Bennett, was completely destroyed as he couldn’t take her death. Although, she killed herself, but she was truly loved by Louis.

"Why are you staring at me like that?..."

"Um, nothing..."
