Anne looked at Merek questioningly, mistaken. That didn’t make any sense, did she just hear him say...

As the thought deepened, Anne’s eyes began to tremble, something was wrong. It sounded like he had feelings for her. But it couldn’t be. Merek never tried to contact her nor come to see her in Zari ever since she left Findara, he was distant from her.

’wait, was he really distant at all?’

During dinner, he’d mentioned dishes from the past and afterwards he gave her his coat without hesitation.

Even now...

He had come back for her. Anne frowned as she laid out today’s events in her mind.

Merek looked at her confused of her sudden reaction, he then asked, "How should I interprete that look on your face?"

Anne glanced up at him, "Merek, you don’t like me. Don’t... don’t confuse me with your words even more. Do you have any idea how hard it is to have hope and then have it shattered into pieces?" She asked.

For the first time, Anne spoke out against Merek. But, for the first time, a small smile graced Merek’s lips when he heard her words. Even that tiny reaction was monumental, considering his usually expressionless face. It was even more special for Anne, who’d never seen him smile for all the years she’d been in love with him.

"Merek...?" She stared at him in astonishment of the smile on his lips. He looked even more youthful with a smile. As she continued to stare at him, Merek raised his hand and gently flicked her nose,

"Silly, we’ve only been apart for four years and you look so different. You look all matured and more beautiful than the last time I remember, I’m still finding it hard to believe that you’re my Annette."

"What..."

This conversation was starting to move in a direction she didn’t expect, and her tongue felt numb. Although, Merek’s features looked the same as ever, but from his point of view, Anne must have changed a lot. She might have been a naive young girl in the past, but everyone could see she was an elegant woman now, with matured womanly curves that could put a Greecian goddess to shame.

Anne managed to continue speaking with trembling voice, "If you keep on speaking this way...I might misunderstand your intentions again."

Merek clicked his tongue, "You still don’t seem to get the point here, do you? Why do you think I came all the way here from Findara to Zari?"

"Because you have business here in Zari?" She asked unsure.

"You’re right, I had some work to do here, however, I could send my assistant to get it done without me having to come myself, but I volunteered to do it myself, and also took charge of the supplies sent to you by the queen."

"Do you mean...!"

"Yes, everything is not a coincidence." He admitted.

Anne’s eyes widened at his confession. It was so profound that she doubted whether she interpreted his meaning correctly. No matter how hard she thought about it, there was only one correct answer,

"Does this mean you came to Zari to see me?"

Merek nodded his head in affirmation, "Yes, I came all the way here just for you."

"...!" Anne covered her face with her palms as her eyes brimmed with tears that threatened to spill over once again.

Merek quickly held her shoulders, "I’m sorry, I didn’t meant to make you cry again..."

However, the tears she shed were silent tears of joy, she’d never thought that her love would be requited, she never expected a happy ending for her love story. But things seemed to turned out different.

As Anne blinked, her tears began to fall. They weren’t tears of sorrow like awhile ago, but tears of relief and joy. She sniffled between her words, "Then why didn’t you tell me you came here for me right from the start?"

"Because I thought you didn’t hold any feelings for me anymore, and I happened to overhear your maids saying you’re in a relationship with the grand general of Findara, Alexander. So I didn’t want to come in between..."

Anne’s forehead creased, it was true that many people were trying to pair her up with Alex for the past few years they’d been friends, so she wasn’t surprised that her servants were talking about her relationship with Alex, and Merek overheard them. But what if he’d believed it and left her for good?

"So if it were true that I’m settled with Alex, you would have given up and left?" She asked.

"Yes, if you’re happy with him, then I would."

"How can I be happy? I...I can’t be happy without you in my life, Merek."

In all the four years she hadn’t seen Merek, Anne had learned many things. A person didn’t literally only die when their life was over_it was just a time when they live and breathe but deep down, they don’t feel alive nor have the desire to live anymore. If she was asked what she wanted more than anything in this world, she would be able to answer without hesitation.

It was this man in front of her, Merek. The only one she desperately wanted the most in this world was him alone. And now, that earnest desire had come true. It was a happiness that she thought would never come into her life. Her tears of joy streamed endlessly down her cheeks.

"I hope this moment is not one of my many dreams..." She murmured.

Merek gently brushed Anne’s cheek with his thumb, "No, it’s all real."

"It would be so cruel if this turns out to be a dream. If I should wake up from this in the morning...I will really kill myself_"

Merek quickly pressed a finger to her lips, "Shh, don’t say that. I am here for you now."

Upon hearing his words, Anne immediately launched her body against Merek’s solid chest. They both fell backwards and collapsed on the floor together, but Merek never attempted to push her away from his arms. His hands, which had been wandering in the air without knowing what to do with them, sank gently around Anne’s waist.

The firm hold around Anne’s waist made her cry louder than before, and she clenched tightly to his shirt. This was beyond her imagination, Merek hugging her this tight...it was the happiest moment of her life.
