Chapter 329: Waited for four years
Inside a dimly lit room, a beautiful young woman with brown hair was seen sleeping on the huge bed, her eyebrows were deeply furrowed together as if she was having a nightmare, her fist were tightly clenched around her blanket.
"Ahh!" Her eyes flew open, revealing her blue eyes which looked dark in the dim room. She was none other than Anne, her forehead was covered in sweat as she breathed heavily even though she’d already woken up from her dream.
"Hah, hah." She raised her hand and brushed away her damp forehead, before looking around her room, it was still dark outside, only the moon light was illuminating from the slightly opened window.
Ever since she’d left Findara to live in Zari, she’d had countless nights like this one. Anne slowly turned to her right side, where a pillow with a familiar jacket around it lay next to her on the bed. It was a jacket he’d given her on the night she was kidnapped, ever since then she’d treasure it and always kept it around her. She’d even gone as far as to wear it around her pillow and always kept it on her bed next to her. It was the only thing she had of him.
’Merek...’
Anne mentally repeated the name that she could not dare to say out loud again. Even when she closed her eyes, she could see him vividly beneath her eyelids. She still remembered their last departure, and words she’d said to him that night.
_’I will let you go...I won’t bother you anymore nor will I blame you for not accepting me. I hope you finally make peace with your past, Merek. I hope you find happiness someday...’
It was true that she’d let him go that night, but the words she spoke were clearly a lie, because she had never let go. Four years had now passed since her brother-in-law Hamon passed away, and since the twins were born. Even after all these years of separation from Merek, her heart still longed for him. He continually appeared in her dreams and prevented her from having a good night rest.
Because of him, she’d even missed her brother Henry’s wedding with the princess three years ago, and also their baby naming banquet. She didn’t want to go back to a place that would remind her of him, but yet he never stopped hunting her dreams and life in Zari. She’d hoped this longing would gradually disappear, but strangely it seemed to deepen every day.
Anne slowly pushed away her blanket and raised her upper body. Though four years had passed, her facial features still looked the same, however her body had matured, her womanly figure was evident beneath her nightdress.
She sat on her knees on the bed as she stared at the pillow with Merek’s Jacket, "Coward, humph!" She gently smacked the pillow with the back of her hand, she did this everyday to vent her anger for Merek on the pillow.
"It’s been four years now, and you’re still a coward just like you’ve always been..."
But then she hoped that Merek was happy, like the last farewell she’d left him that night. However, somewhere deep down she wished he was unhappy and lonely, she wanted him to come back to her.
After some minutes of wishing Merek to be unhappy, Anne inwardly scolded herself for being so vile and petty, she quickly went back to wishing him happiness. It had been four years, she still had trouble arranging her feelings regarding Merek.
Anne sighed in defeat as she hugged the pillow to her chest and fell back on the bed, she tightened her hold around it as she said in a low murmur,
"I had a dream that you’ve forgotten about me, and I witnessed you getting married to someone else...but when I approached you, you asked me who I was, as if you’d never met me. It’s hurt even though it was just a dream."
Anne smiled sadly, perhaps while she was here waiting for her emotions to die down, Merek had probably already forgotten about her, but there was nothing she could do. She looked at the pillow with a sad expression, then said,
"I’ve waited and hoped for four years, father even urged my aunt to match me up, but I refused repeatedly, because I’m still hoping you’d come for me one day and ask me to be yours. You know, I even bought a mansion of my own just to avoid the topic of marriage with my aunt..." She paused briefly, then turned to sleep on her side while still hugging the pillow, "Have you really forgotten about me and moved on?" She muttered.
Ironically, even in her dreams they didn’t end up together. She understood that maybe it was fated to be this way, but still, she couldn’t bring herself to move on.
"I’ve waited for four years, I’ll wait one more year, if you don’t come...then I’ll get married to anybody my aunt chooses for me."
After making her decision, Anne finally fell asleep again. The next morning, she woke up a bit late and quickly stared to prepare to go to her restaurant. Years ago, she’d only started small, but as time went by she soon rose to prominence, and her restaurant was now one of the best in Zari, people come from various kingdoms just to have a taste of her amazing cooking.
It had always been her dream to be a well-known chef, and now her dreams had come true, she was now one of the independent women in the lands.
As Anne entered her restaurant, one of her workers quickly approached her, "My lady, lord Alexander has been waiting to see you in your office."
"Oh, is he still there now?"
"Yes, my lady."
Anne gave a nod of her head and walked past the worker heading straight to her office. Years ago when her restaurant was still small, she’d bumped into Alexander Felstead in the market, and ever since then they’d been close friends and he had also been one of the people who had helped her reach to the peek today. Years ago he signed a contract with her restaurant to be the ones to deliver food to the five soldier’s camp in Zari, and would pay her restaurant after every week of service.
As a result, she naturally became close to Alex. Anne opened the door to her office, and there she found him sitting causally on her desk, with his slender fingers playing with a sheet of paper. His broad frame made her desk looked smaller in size, his black shirt rested firmly on his well built torso, showing off his manly masculine figure.
Alex was a very popular man around the circle of ladies in Zari, his looks alone was enough to make ones breath seize. Furthermore, there was nothing he lacked in appearance, including wealth.
Seeing that Anne stepped inside the office, a warm charming smile graced his lips, "You’re finally here, lady boss."
Anne was already used to Alex’s addressing her as lady boss instead of her name. She smiled back at him, "Yes, sorry I’m late today, I hope you haven’t been waiting here for long?"
Alex waved his hand, "Not at all, I just got here a few minutes ago."
"Oh, that’s good then. I haven’t seen you in awhile, so I wasn’t expecting you’d come today, but to what do I own this unexpected visit, Alex?" She asked playfully as she wiggled her brows up and down.
"Well, I was passing by so I thought to stop by to see you, as well as make my the weekly payments."
Anne answered with an, "Oh, I see. So what would you like to have, I’ll get the waiter to bring you..."
"No, I don’t want anything. I only came here to make the payment and to see your face, I’ve missed you."
"...?" Anne couldn’t find the word to reply, but unlike her, however Alex calmly stood up from the desk, he walked towards her and took her hand before gently pushing her down on the chair to sit, then also sat opposite her.
"The soldiers in the camp are really satisfied with your restaurant’s service, so they want you to have this." He said at the same time, he took out a coin purse and set it on the table with a heavy sound.
Anne took the purse to check the contents of it, her eyes widened. The money was more than she’d expected to receive, "This much? I don’t think my food is that much expensive."
Alex chuckled, "Well, the soldiers wanted to reward you and your workers for your services through out these years, so they added to your pay." He spoke in a modest tone, however, in truth, he was the one who added to the payment, because he knew she’d never accept the money if he gave it to her straightforwardly. Thus, he’d been using such methods to assist her all these years without her knowledge.
Nevertheless, Anne who was oblivious to this, couldn’t hide the joy in her face, "Thank you. The soldiers camp has been a great help to my restaurant through the years, and it was all thanks to you Alex."
"You’re welcome, but I have something else I’d like to speak to you about."
"Tell me, I’m all ears. What is it?" She beamed.
Alex cleared his throat, "Well, I heard your aunt is trying to match you up...I would be honored if you would accept my request for a date tonight."
"Oh come on, Alex. Enough with your silly jokes." Anne simply tried to playfully pass it over, but the expression in Alex’s eyes turned serious,
"What if I say I’m serious this time, would you accept my offer to take you out?"
