Chapter 310: The little boy
Chapter 310: The little boy
"Lord David has been delivered to the gates of his household along with reports of his crimes, the Minister of finance has requested a meeting with you, to apologise for his son’s unruly behavior..." Froylan was standing behind Henry in the courtyard, as he made his report.
"She had affections for me... Since when...?" Henry continued to calmly pace around while mumbling silently.
"Pardon?" Froylan queried cluelessly not having fully heard what Henry had been mumbling. He frowned when Henry still didn’t reply as he continued to pace, "My lord?" He called curiously.
Henry suddenly turned around to face him, with a look of displeasure on his face, "But you should be blamed for this Froylan." Henry suddenly said.
Froylan blinked cluelessly, "My lord, pardon me but I do not know what you speak of."
"Is it not your fault that the Minister of finance’s son was among the list of suitors?"
Froylan fell silent, he had indeed suggested the young man as he knew him to be an eligible bachelor, however, he had no idea the man was a piece of scum.
"I apologise my lord, I..." Froylan hadn’t finished speaking when Henry’s mumbles once again cut him off.
"But if it is so that she had affections for me... Why then does she refuse to marry me?" He had a hand on his chin looking thoughtful.
"Pardon?" This time, Froylan had heard what Henry mumbled, it was just that he couldn’t believe it, so he thought perhaps there must be something wrong with his ears.
Henry had said something about marriage, and a she? That was very unlikely, for all the decades of the man’s handsome youth, he had never once been associated with another woman other than his sisters. The only other woman Froylan could say Henry had associated with was...
Froylan’s frown eased as his eyes widened looking up at Henry in astonishment. The lady Eadlin? He wondered, Henry was actually talking about the lady Eadlin?
Could it be that Henry had actually...
Henry still looked contemplative, Eadlin’s words replaying in his head.
Throughout his life a few women had been able to summon the guts to confess their affections to him, however none had bothered him this much.
He had been contemplating about it all day. If she did have feelings for him, why did she refuse to marry him? But then a thought struck him as he recalled the kind of person she was, she was a kind, selfless and responsible young woman, so she definitely wouldn’t marry him for the sake of responsibility or guilt.
However, their deal indeed had come to an end, he had introduced her to three men who had rejected her, and according to the deal he would have to deliver her to the Bimmari mountains where she would be spending the rest of her life as a nun.
However, as that thought crossed his mind, a numb ache clutched his chest. Henry suddenly stopped in his tracks wondering what that sudden feeling of displeasure was. Would he be able to bear letting her spend the rest of her life at a nun house?
Froylan watched with astonishment as Henry’s expression changed multiple times.
Impossible... No, it was actually possible, because he was seeing it right in front of him. Lord Henry had actually...
However, all of a sudden a maid’s voice came running into the courtyard,
"Lord Henry! Lord Henry!"
"What is it?" Henry asked sternly, having been cut off from his thoughts.
"The lady Eadlin... She’s not in her room! Once again, she left!" The maid reported panting heavily.
As the maid’s words sunk in, Henry didn’t hesitate in rushing out of the courtyard without a second’s thought.
Froylan who had expected to receive orders from Henry was left dumbstruck as Henry just rushed out.
Did the young lady’s disappearance muddle his mind? Or was he really planning to rush off and find her himself this time?
Froylan knew he was supposed to hurry after Henry, but the realization of the situation had astonished him into an unmoving statue. The young lord Henry Boxton had actually... Developed affections for a woman?
---
The night was bustling, but not as lively as it was on the last time she’d been out. She strolled through the streets of the city with countless voices of vendors and stall owners calling for sale.
Her mind drifted back to what happened earlier that day, she had actually confessed her feelings to Henry. Not once had she imagined she would ever do that, she had sworn to keep those feelings to herself for the rest of her life that she’d live at the nun house. In the end, she had been too emotional and let her feelings out.
Eadlin couldn’t even bear to think about it, she wondered what he would think of her now that he knew her feelings. He must certainly be repulsed by her.
As she continued to stroll down the streets in her melancholy, she suddenly caught sight of a tiny figure crouched under a tree at the far side of the streets. Cute eyes peeking out from behind the tree warily.
Eadlin paused her steps and frowned, while her eyes curiously peeked behind the tree, she slowly walked towards the direction.
As she came behind the tree, she saw a little boy seemingly hiding behind the tree as he peeked out warily from the other side.
Eadlin followed the little boy’s eyes but she couldn’t make out what he was peeking at or what he seemed to be hiding from on the busy streets. She slowly reached her hand to poke the boy who suddenly jumped,
"Aaah!"
Eadlin stepped back, momentarily shocked by the boy’s scream.
The boy stopped screaming as he looked at her, he scanned her from head to toe, before letting out a sigh, "Why did you sneak up on me, can’t you see I’m trying to hide?"
The boy looked to be seven to eight years of age, he had an adorable round face, cute big eyes and puffy cheeks, and by his way of dressing, he looked to be from a noble household.
"Hiding?" Eadlin asked, "From what?"
The little boy sighed dramatically, then made to sit by the trunk of the tree, "Hiding, from my deepest sorrows of course." The boy said in a serious manner.
Eadlin almost smiled seeing the little boy act so seriously, "Sorrows? What kind of sorrows?" She wondered just what deep emotions could an eight year old boy have.
The little boy didn’t reply immediately, however he raised his head to look at her, "Aren’t we just the same? A lonely lady roaming the streets alone at night, and a little boy whose heart is filled with sorrow? Come sit." He said patting the space beside him under the tree.
Eadlin found herself amused by this child, was he even really a child or an adult dwarf? However, the bright adorable little face and the childish tone of his voice made it evident that he indeed was just a little boy, perhaps just smarter and mouthy.
Nevertheless, Eadlin sighed and took her seat beside the boy under the tree. He was right after all, she was just a lonely lady roaming the streets.
"So, why are you roaming the streets all alone?" The little boy asked.
Eadlin gave a sideways glance at the kid’s face, she smiled lightly, "Well, let me see, first of all, I’m a disabled woman who no one else wants, rejected by everyone, and the only person who cares about me, I don’t deserve his love and protection, I don’t even deserve to be called his sister... Then, I’ll have to carry the burden of a one sided love for the rest of my life, so I needed to get away." She muttered silently as if more to herself but the little boy was quietly listening.
He gazed up at her with his jaw slightly dropped, "But you don’t look like a disabled woman to me." He said not seeing any disabilities on her.
Eadlin smiled and pulled up the sleeve of her dress, though she was used to people’s horrified reactions, she didn’t want to scare the little boy.
However, the boy indifferently looked at her arm for some time before calmly looking away, it was as if he hadn’t seen anything.
Eadlin wondered if the child was just secretly horrified or too young to understand what a disabled person meant. The boy suddenly spoke up.
"Look at that." He said pointing at the sky.
Eadlin followed the direction of his hand looking up at the sky, she could see a dim lone star standing far away from the brighter twinkling ones.
"Have you heard of the legend of Keildan star?" The boy asked.
"Keildan star?" Eadlin asked clueless about what he was talking about.
"Alienated from the rest, looked down upon, abandoned by all, but do you know what it’s capable of?"
Eadlin shook her head looking on curiously at the little boy.
"Every once a century, a day comes when the Kieldan star shines the brightest, so bright it outshines every other star in the sky. The moon is awed by it’s great beauty, and once a month invites the Kieldan star to stand side by side with himself on a crescent moon night, all the other stars would bow down before the Kieldan star, because for all eternity, no other star has had the honor to stand beside the moon itself."
Eadlin was awed at the little boy’s story, she looked up at the sky staring at the dim star among other bright ones.
The boy spoke again, "Aren’t you just like the Kieldan star?" He asked.
Eadlin glanced at him puzzled, "Me?"
"Yes, you look down on yourself, call yourself disabled, and unworthy, just like the Kieldan star, you do not yet realize your own worth, you do not yet realize that you’re worth more than you give yourself credit for."
Eadlin found his words familiar, she thought about it a little bit to realize that she had heard the same words from Henry.
For some reason, the little boy’s words spread a soothing calm to her chest.
"What’s your name?" Eadlin suddenly asked.
"Crispin, my name is Crispin, may I know your name milady?"
Eadlin smiled at the boy’s mature way of speaking.
"Eadlin." She said, "Where did you learn the legend of the Kieldan star?"
"My father told me about it." Saying that the boy frowned deeply as if remembering something he added, "That mean old punk!"
"Huh?" Eadlin gave a quizzical look, wondering who the boy was displeased with.
"Nothing." The boy have her a small smile as he continued to look up into the sky.
Eadlin smiled, this was the first time in a long time she was feeling a sense of companionship with someone, she found herself feeling at ease with the strange young boy.
Under the vast skies, amidst the bustling city, a young lady and a little boy could be seen sitting in silence under a tree as they both gazed up into the sky.
