Wife of The Demon Prince -
Chapter 301: I am not a thief!
Chapter 301: I am not a thief!
Eadlin ran as fast as her legs could take her. She raced through the bustling festivity of the night right into the crowd, however, she could still feel the bunch of men from the whorehouse hot on her tail.
She navigated her way around a few people carrying some heavy things along the streets, narrowly escaping bumping Into them. While the loud sounds of the men’s voices from behind her drifted into her ears,
"Stop that woman, she’s a thief! Catch her!!!"
Perhaps they were expecting anyone at the front to intercept her escape which was why they were suddenly accusing her of being a thief, since the people at the city would most likely not let a thief get to escape.
Hearing the alarming shouts of thief from the men chasing her. A burly store owner up ahead of Eadlin quickly moved onto the road, arms wide open and ready to catch her.
Eadlin’s eyes widened in dread, but she continued to charge forward, the burly man in his certainty to nab her didn’t expect it when she suddenly slipped past him fluidly, he only thing he realized was that she had almost been in his grasp for a second, before she suddenly slipped away like a slimy fish.
"Hey, someone catch that woman, she’s a thief, a thief!!!" The men continued to yell.
A few more people hearing that were quick to try and grab Eadlin. It was becoming harder and harder for her to escape a small crowd of people on her tail.
The people in the city of Findara believed fervently in eradicating a potential threat before it harmed the masses, if she turned out to be a thief, they would prefer to catch her before any of them falls victim to her.
She rounded a corner after very barely slipping through two men who had barred her road in a very close call, but she hadn’t even gotten to take a breath in relief when she suddenly felt herself land against a strong chest immediately upon rounding the corner. Without a second look she attempted to use her maneuvering skills to slip away as usual but a firm grip on her shoulders held her In place.
She had been caught.
"Let me go I’m not a thief!!" She desperately struggled to free herself when she suddenly heard the distant voices getting near.
"She’s been caught, get her!!"
The men rushed forward, but a strong arm suddenly pulled her backwards, "Dare to touch her!"
She heard a familiar voice drift over from above her. Her eyes widened and she looked up in amazement to be met by a familiar yet stern side profile.
Henry?
She hadn’t expected she’d bump into him. She hadn’t even looked up and had assumed it was one of the good Samaritans on the streets who also wanted to catch a thief.
The men who had been chasing Eadlin all the way from the whorehouse suddenly came to a stop when they realized the noble aura from the man who had helped them catch the girl. They had initially been in a hurry to grab her from his hands not having fully noticed the clothes the man was dressed in or the intense aura he was exuding.
The men checked themselves, then stood still taking a deep bow, "Apologies my Lord, we didn’t mean to rush up on you, we’ve been chasing a thief, many thanks for helping us nab her, if you don’t mind, we’d like to take her back with us for due punishments." One of them stepped forward sporting a full bow to show deep respect.
Henry said no word, which made the men exchanged glances between each other, his face was hard to read since he sported an expressionlessly stern looking face.
The whole place fell silently still as the men waited for Henry’s permission for them to take Eadlin with them. Since the girl was a whore who escaped and they had labelled her a thief, so they saw no reason why Henry would have any intentions of helping her, so the only other plausible explanation would be that Henry was an indifferent noble. He’d probably caught her for the fun of it and saw no reason in speaking with their lowly selves. It was no surprise, since a lot of nobles disregarded the lower class anyway.
The man in the lead saw nothing wrong In grabbing their prisoner since Henry seemed to want to have nothing to do with their issue. So he reached forward in an attempt to grab Eadlin whom he thought was trying to hide behind the noble man.
However, his hands had just barely grazed the torn sleeve of her dress when a firm grip suddenly held his outstretched hand. The man gazed up only to be met with Henry’s dark blue eyes,
"I told you not to dare touch her." Along with the dark threatening tone of his voice, a crisp snapping sound rang out, following which was a loud painful howl from the man who screeched like a pig in a slaughter house.
The man fell to the floor painfully clutching his broken arm whose bones had turned slacked immediately Henry released him.
The innocent stall owners and spectators who had joined on the run to catch Eadlin watched with dread filled shock, they quickly took a step back, removing themselves from among the group of men who had initially been chasing after Eadlin under Henry’s firm gaze.
Everyone was stunned at Henry’s actions.
"My lord, I apologise if we’ve offended you, but that woman is a thief and a whore..."
Henry’s dark gaze fell on the person who just spoke up making him suddenly shrink himself in like a withered flower. He visibly trembled in fear as Henry’s brows drew together in displeasure.
"What did you just call her?"
The man almost felt his knees buckle under the overwhelming pressure of Henry’s visible anger. But he couldn’t understand why.
Henry felt an unknown kind of rage building up inside him, underneath that was a boundless amount of guilt, especially when he saw the state Eadlin had fallen into. Her dress was torn and she looked disheveled. To think that the once beautiful and elegant princess of Findara had fallen to this state under his care when he had clearly promised Hamon to be responsible for her safety and well-being.
The guilt and rage burned within him that he didn’t know when he took a step forward, the next thing he knew the man was already struggling to breathe under Henry’s strong arm choking his neck.
The thought of the man calling her a whore brought a flash of an image in his mind where he saw Eadlin actually being at the whorehouse where she would be forced to serve countless men. Rage filled him and the next second, his arms tightened against the man’s neck, not long after the man fell lifeless at the side.
All the other men looked at Henry, terror filled their eyes. The spectators didn’t dare remain for fear of inviting Henry’s ire upon themselves, after all, they too had been after the young woman, they dispersed in the blink of an eye.
The men from the whorehouse also took to their heels, some stumbling upon themselves in fright. They couldn’t even be bothered to stay back and think about why an obviously powerful noble was defending the whore as they all fled for their lives.
At the moment they were all trying to run off Henry’s men who had been around also searching for Eadlin suddenly arrived, the men were immediately surrounded by the Boxton soldiers upon Henry’s signal leaving them nowhere to run. Some of them who had managed to run a bit far were not spared either as the Boxton soldiers were quick to have them cornered. They were brought before Henry in a flash.
"Take them away, have them all locked up and investigated. And..." Henry suddenly paused mid-sentence as he suddenly realized something, he frowned then slowly turned around to find the space behind him empty.
Eadlin, whom he had hidden behind him was now nowhere to be seen. He frowned.
Where did she suddenly go?
