Chapter 298: Work for a single night
The woman’s house was located in the heart of the city, where all the hustle and bustle of the celebration was still taking place.
Walking into the large courtyard, that was fully lit by festive lanterns, people going back and forth, Eadlin kept glancing all around, at that moment, she couldn’t help but notice that most people they came across were young maidens beautifully dressed.
All the maidens walking by stopped to greet the woman immediately they saw her.
The courtyard was sectioned where there were a few rooms built amongst each other like a set of living quarters, while the main house stood in the middle of it all.
As Eadlin followed behind the woman towards the main house, her sight travelled to the other side in front of one of the rooms, where a man who looked like an important noble, with a young woman in his arms, both glued together while the lady occasionally giggled at something the man said. The man later pulled the girl along with him into the room and the door was shut afterwards.
"What are you doing standing there? Come."
Eadlin was suddenly brought back to her senses to realize that the woman had stepped onto the porch about to go inside, while she was distracted watching the man and woman. "Y-yes." Eadlin mumbled then stepped up to continue following the woman. Her brows furrowed ever so slightly as she wondered if the woman’s house was some sort of inn.
"You’re back lady Gold, what happened to your dress?" A soft voice of a woman exclaimed immediately they stepped into the brightly lit house.
"Oh I just ran into an accident." The woman who Eadlin ran into uttered in a monotonous tone.
Eadlin’s eyes couldn’t help but keep roaming around the large hall. Where there was a small raised platform at the front with bright red curtains concealing another part of the hall, with the gentle blow of the breeze, the curtains would drift ever so slightly, but it still didn’t reveal what stood on the other side. Eadlin couldn’t fully see what was happening behind the curtains, but she could hear soft sounds of music drifting over, along with merry voices of people seeming to be having a good time.
As lady Gold and the woman conversed, the latter suddenly seemed to notice Eadlin, giving her a once over to scan her haggard looking appearance, "Who have you brought with you this time lady Gold?" The young woman asked curiously.
Lady Gold turned to give Eadlin a look then replied to the woman, "She’s a girl who had a debt to pay, just for tonight."
Eadlin felt slight unease creeping up her spine at the way the woman called Lady Gold was looking at her, while the other young woman snickered quietly into her palm.
"Come here girl." Lady Gold made a hand gesture calling Eadlin over.
Though Eadlin felt dreadful, but the thought of being reported to the council was something she couldn’t afford, her identify would be revealed and if she got banished from Findara, she would have absolutely no where else to go.
"I’d prefer to be assigned work as soon as possible my lady, so I can be done faster and repay my debts to you." Eadlin said with her head lowered to show the woman respect.
Both women exchanged looks, a smirk coming up lady Gold’s face.
"Patience girl, you’ll be assigned your work in due time. Remember, if you perform well and impress me, I’ll clear you of your debts, but if you ruin things for me then..." The woman’s eyes turned dark, as she gave Eadlin a straight look, but the threat behind her unsaid words were evident. But she suddenly broke into a smile,"Am sure we won’t want that to happen."
Eadlin hesitated for a few seconds before saying, "Yes my lady."
"Good." Lady Gold beamed, "Darla, get her cleaned up first, then we can ascertain the grade."
The young woman called Darla once again scanned Eadlin from head to toe, a hint of mockery in her eyes, nevertheless she said, "Yes lady Gold."
Without saying anything to Eadlin she turned around to leave while lady Gold made a hand gesture for Eadlin to go with her.
With hesitant steps, Eadlin followed after the young woman. They walked towards the other side of the room, towards a long hallway. Eadlin turned around to where lady Gold had been standing earlier to find her gone, as her eyes roamed around looking for the woman, she caught sight of her heading towards the part of the room that had red curtains concealing the other side.
With a small gust of wind, the voice of a man travelled to Eadlin’s ears from behind the curtains,
"Gold, where are the fresh maidens you promised, don’t keep us waiting."
"Do not worry Lord Darius, the new batch are all being prepared, just wait for a while, I assure you, you won’t be disappointed tonight." Eadlin heard the lady’s cheerful voice.
She kept looking in that direction, while trying to think of what their words could possibly mean. And what did the man mean by fresh batch of maidens?
"What are you doing standing there, walk quick!" Darla’s spiteful voice came from behind Eadlin. She had stopped walking to listen to the voices coming from that man and lady Gold, she didn’t realize Darla had already walked far.
"Yes." Eadlin hurried her pace to catch up to Darla.
A lot of other girls could be seen going back and forth along the hallways, most of them chattering and laughing amongst each other.
Darla opened the door to a certain room, moving aside for Eadlin to go in first before following behind her.
There were even more women inside this room, on one side were vanity mirrors where the women were seated all applying different things to their faces. While on the other side were racks of clothes of different colors.
"Come with me." Darla led her down the room through another door where there were multiple partitions that separated different bathing rooms in sections.
Darla gave her a thin dress and a normal dress, which she instructed her to wear the silk dress underneath the normal one, then gave her a few supplies.
"Why does the lady want me to clean up, is she not going to assign me to work?’ Eadlin asked only to receive a degrading look from Darla who didn’t bother to reply but left her there instead.
Due to Eadlin’s sheltered life in the palace, though she found the things happening in this house weird, she didn’t develope any specific suspicions.
She stepped into the bath to clean herself, she wasn’t used to being dirty anyway. Neither was she used to bathing without maids waiting on her, but Eadlin knew that luxurious life was already behind her, she wouldn’t be able to live as a princess that she used to be. Though it was hard to take a bath with a single arm, she still found a way to manage herself.
After a while, she wore the thin silk dress Darla had given her, then the normal dress over it, when she was fully ready, she stepped out of the baths.
The women in the room were busily going back and forth, some leaving the room when fully ready, while others continued to sit at the vanity prepping their faces.
Eadlin slowly approached Darla who was busily talking to another girl. She turned to look at Eadlin fleetingly then looked away, before her eyes swung back to Eadlin as she assessed her from head to toe.
She didn’t expect the girl who looked like a beggar some time ago to suddenly transform. Her skin was unblemished, milky white as if it had never seen the sun, her hair sleekly poured down behind still damp from the bath, she had a beautiful face, that looked like the pampered daughter of a rich noble.
Some of the ladies going back and forth preparing themselves also couldn’t help but stop to take a second look at Eadlin.
"You..." Darla began but was at a loss for words.
Eadlin had confusion in her eyes, she looked down at herself in puzzlement, then back at Darla and the other maiden with her, both ladies having astonished expressions.
"Did I perhaps wear the dress wrong?" Eadlin asked innocently, since she wasn’t used to preparing herself without the help of maids, not to mention her single arm, she wasn’t sure if she did anything wrongly.
Darla came back to her senses, she cleared her throat and said, "No, you’re just fine." The earlier degrading look she was giving Eadlin had completely vanished, but then her eyes fell on Eadlin’s slack arm, she frowned, "What happened to your arm?"
Eadlin self consciously held her paralyzed arm with the good one and muttered, "I had an accident, it can’t be fixed."
Darla wanted to say something, but when her sight fell on Eadlin’s face she held back the words and said, "Nevermind, you’ll still do. Come."
She made to leave the room with Eadlin following behind her again.
"Where did lady Gold get this beautiful one from? She looks like a spoiled noble."
"I don’t know, lady Gold has an eye out for the lovely ones, she’ll surely be a favorite around here."
As they left the room, such murmurs drifted into Eadlin’s ears, once again, she frowned, nevertheless, she couldn’t understand the meaning behind their words, so she followed Darla out who began to lead her towards the section in the large hall behind the red curtains.
