Wife of The Demon Prince -
Chapter 28: Necklace
Chapter 28: Necklace
Ara strode to the jewelry box and looked closely at the necklace that caught her eyes, it was a necklace with a half shiny red stone on its pendant.
Most nobles loved to adorn themselves in fine jewelry, the bigger the gem, the bigger the self importance. However, the necklace in her hand was a plain one, only the gem stone on it shone bright, otherwise, it looked like a cheap necklace, ’How did this get here?’
Wasn’t it a gift from...an old lady? Suddenly memories started to flood to her head. After the death of her family in the past, Ara had fled to another kingdom, Greenwood kingdom. The poorest among the lands, she had taken all of her accessories and everything she ever owned with her, Ara had hidden her identity in the kingdom and wandered around in desperate need of money, which was why she sold all of her accessories, after she sold everything.
Ara started to leave in a small house, that looked like it would fall at any moment, few days later. She was walking down a street when she heard,
"Please, help me with some food my child...Am Very hungry." An old woman begged, Ara had wanted to pass the old lady, because she had some important things to attend to, but Ara heard the old lady’s exhausted sorrowful voice again, "Have mercy, my child." This time Ara paused her steps and turned back to the lady, Ara only had some change with her, but she couldn’t leave the woman like that, she crouched down and helped the old woman stand without much of a word.
Ara took the old lady to an eatery near by, she ordered for two plates of food, because she also hadn’t eaten that morning. Ara watched the old woman eat as if she had been starving for weeks, after the woman finished her food, Ara pushed her own plate to the woman, "You can have it, am not hungry." She said with a small smile.
The woman paused for a few seconds, before she took the food without a word and finished it up.
Ara stood up, and paid for their meals and even gave the old lady some of her money, the woman took it and thanked her, Ara was about to leave when she heard, "Wait, my child...I have something for you too." Ara stopped and turned to the woman who was searching for something in her small pouch, and brought out a necklace,
"Take this my child, it’s a gift from me for helping me out, I’ll never forget the kindness you showed to me today...it’s precious to me, but you can have it." Exclaimed the woman whose identity Ara didn’t even know.
"If you keep it...The other half will find you, consider it as a gift from me, and remember it will find you!"
Ara shook her head, "No, you can keep it since it’s precious to you...I have to go now." Ara turned to leave again but the woman stopped her, "Wait... please just take it." Ara refused to take it countless times, but the woman kept on insisting for her to take the necklace, because she was in a hurry to leave and with the old lady stopping her repeatedly, Ara had no choice but to take the necklace, but before she could leave the old lady said,
"If you take care of it...It will serve you well." Ara was in a hurry, she thanked the woman and left the place.
However, she had missed the glint that flashed in the woman’s eyes the moment she turned her back to leave.
Back at the present, Ara stared at the necklace in her hand, wondering how it had returned to the past with her, the necklace had little value, she remembered her conversation with a jewelry store owner,
’Am sorry, miss, but I have never seen a gem stone such as this one on the necklace, it looks kind of expensive, but since the gem stone on it is broken, I can’t buy it from you.’
Her need was desperate back then, Ara had tried to sell the necklace, but eventually, No one wanted to buy it from her as it was broken. ever since Then, Ara had worn the necklace, she rarely took it off, it became part of her.
"How long has this necklace been here?" Ara mumbled to herself.
"What necklace? Let me see." Anne said as she took the necklace from Ara,
"I don’t think I have seen this before today, I only saw it when I was looking through your jewelry box awhile ago"
"Really..."
Ara was sure that the necklace was the same as the one the old lady gave her in the future, other than that she wasn’t sure how it got into her jewelry box. Ara heard the old woman’s voice in her head,
’If you keep it...The other half will find you, consider it as a gift from me, and remember it will find you!’
Ara stared silently at the necklace, and with a familiar ease, she wore it back on her neck. In the past it had became part of her, she had certainly missed it, she didn’t know what the old lady meant back then, but now it would serve to remind her of the days she was a lonely soldier.
"Don’t tell me you’re planning to wear that?" Anne asked with a narrowed eyes.
"Hmm, yes."
"But it’s not fashionable enough for you to wear, it looks plain and some what old, you can get something prettier than that when we go shopping."
"No Anne, It’s kind of dear to me...but don’t worry, I’ll still buy some new jewelry when we go out to shop."
Remembering the difficult time she had as a soldier, would help motivate her in the future, and the necklace was a great motivation for her.
Anne still looked concerned, because she knew Ara could wear such necklace to the grand ball,
"But that’s one thing, and buying new jewelry is another. Are you going to wear the new one or this one on your neck?." Anne didn’t wait to hear Ara’s reply as she said again, "I heard there’s a new jewelry store at Larton market, and they had excellent pieces...so I hope we could go check it out before people knew about the new store in town...Will you go there with me?"
"How did you find out about the new store?" Ara asked because Anne rarely went out to the market.
"Emma told me about the jewelry store, she came across it when they went to the grocery store in Larton market."
"Okay, I’ll think about it if it’s not that expensive."
"Oh come on, we can afford it. What are you saving money for when we have a lot of it."
Anne was right, Ara had been living a life of austerity, and somehow saved more money than she did in the past. However, the most important part now, was to pay more attention to her appearance this time, because she had to create a first meeting at the grand ball with Hamon, since Anne had already ordered for their dresses, all that was left was the shoes and jewelry.
"We will go tomorrow." Ara informed which brought a smile to Anne’s face, "Really? Can’t wait for tomorrow then."
Anne gave Ara a tight hug when she was about to leave to go to her room, she wished her a goodnight then left Anne’s room. Ara walked to her room with a smile on her face as she touched the necklace on her neck, ’I wonder how you followed me back to the past.’
When Ara got to her room, she rang the bell on her bedside to call her maid, she was too exhausted, she needed her maid to help her, but she rang the bell a couple of times still the maid didn’t come. Ara was about to get up and prepare the bath herself, when the door finally opened, a maid hurried into the room, but it wasn’t her maid Emma, who usually attend to her, it was a maid named Janet who came this time. Ara wanted to ask about Emma, but she thought maybe Emma might be busy with something which was why she had sent Janet in her place.
"M-my lady, you called." Janet stammered as she looked down at her feet, not wanting to make eye contact with Ara. Ara sensed something was wrong, but she was too exhausted from working on the contract with the Prince since morning.
Janet knew why she was called, and quickly helped Ara take off her tight Corset, with a shaky hand. While Ara felt the maid was acting strange, but didn’t dwell on it for that long as she was tired and just wanted to go to bed.
