Wife of The Demon Prince -
Chapter 278: Coming together
Chapter 278: Coming together
Hamon, who had already gathered all his troops and was about to head to Landow, a small kingdom between Findara and Dumbarton, where he suspected Cornell must be keeping Ara hostage since most of his properties and assets were there, suddenly received a message from his spy in Dumbarton that Cornell and the king of Dumbarton were planning a rebellion, and right now, the army were on their way to Findara.
Hamon frowned deeply as he received the news, he then swiftly dismounted his horse. "That son of a cow will not give up until he brings me down. He had been busy scaremongering and spreading rumors about me, and now this?! A rebellion!" Hamon roughly ran his hand through his sliver hair in frustration. And all the troops he’d gathered started to dismount their horses as well, as they knew it would be impossible to leave the kingdom when a rebellion could happen in their absence.
Hamon already knew what Cornell was planning, he allied with the king of Dumbarton to take the kingdom from him. It was a bold move, but without the support of Dumbarton, Cornell would not have the powers for rebellion.
Then again, joining hands with Dumbarton did not mean he could win against Findara if Hamon decided to lead the army to the battlefield. Hamon had spent most of his life at the border, and also knew every aspect of war.
’I will make Evan regret ever colliding with Cornell!’
Hamon did not care whether Cornell increased his troops, but he would make sure the both of them burned down to ruin. However, there was one problem now, if he took command of the army to stop Cornell’s rebellion, he wouldn’t be able to leave Findara to go and save his wife.
Hamon had to choose between his wife or his kingdom at this moment. If the rebellion succeeded, countless innocent lives would be lost in the war if they allowed Cornell’s troops invade the kingdom. And general Thomas, had already decided not to lead any war as he’d reached the age of retirement, while Alex had left for the general’s training.
’I can’t neglect my wife for the sake of this war, I have to save her!’
He had to save his wife, if he chose the war instead of his wife, Cornell would surely kill her as he no longer had any purpose to keep her anymore. And he couldn’t leave Ara’s safety to anyone else.
’Who else can lead the army to success?’
As Hamon was contemplating on what to do, Merek, who had just returned from his mission to search some certain areas approached Hamon, he bowed, "Your majesty."
Hamon turned towards him, "Did you get any clue?" He asked impatiently. And Merek nodded, "Yes, there are only three potential places where her majesty could be held captive, just like you thought. The possibilities of her being in one of those places are high." Merek paused for a brief moment, and continued when Hamon gave him a go ahead to explain,
"The first place is in Lord Cornell’s private residence in Zari, and the second, his underground dungeon in Landow, and lastly, the slayers headquarters located not far from his underground secret dungeon in Landow."
"Which one of the three do you think she’d likely be held in?"
"I can’t guarantee it, but I would say the slayers headquarters, since it’s the most hidden and highly guarded establishment amongst the two."
Hamon nodded thoughtfully, "What about Zari, has anyone seen Ara so far?" He asked, since Cornell’s family resided in Zari.
"I am not sure, I heard from Lord Henry’s search team that it’s unlikely she’d be held there, since it is an open place. That’s why I suspect the slayers headquarters, or the underground dungeon in Landow."
Hamon also nodded in agreement, if Cornell was keeping Ara hostage, he would most likely keep her somewhere more secured where his men would guard her, otherwise, the prized chess piece would be vulnerable if he left the task to another kingdom. Furthermore, it would also enable Cornell to use her to his advantage at anytime he wanted if she was kept in Landow.
As Hamon and Merek continued to discuss outside the palace gates about their next move, Henry and Lord Richard approached them.
Hearing footsteps, Hamon turned towards the father and son, he wasn’t surprised to see Richard along with Henry who’d been helping in the search, because he was aware Richard must also be immensely worried about his daughter at this moment.
Merek turned to the father and son, and bowed his head slightly in greeting to the pair. Henry and Richard were no longer surprised to see Merek, as they’d found out a few days ago that he had disguised as a servant in the Boxton mansion. However, that did not mean Richard was alright with the young man, there was still a strange air between them and also a slight discomfort.
Especially Richard, who had personally sent Merek away from his household, and now knowing he was sent by Hamon only made him feel a bit embarrassed.
Richard cleared his throat and gave a curt nod of acknowledgement to Merek’s greeting, before bowing to Hamon, "Hail your majesty!"
Hamon held his hand up, "No need for the formal greeting, father-in-law, we are in a tight situation at the moment."
"I have heard about the rebellion...so I want to suggest something, your majesty." Richard said hesitantly.
"Tell me."
"I ask you to deploy the Findara army and allow Henry and I to lead them to the frontline, while you lead the rescue team." Richard was the major general of Findara, and was not the one to lead the frontline army, but now that there was no one available to lead them since it was an unexpected attack that would fall on their kingdom, he was willing to do it.
"..." Hamon silently considered the suggestion. If his wife was here she would not be happy to know that her father would be at the frontlines of a war, but then if he did not agree to it, their kingdom would be left vulnerable to their enemy. Only a few soldiers were in the border camp at the moment, and they wouldn’t be able to hold the enemies for long if they attack.
When Hamon did not speak, Henry, who was standing next to Merek spoke, "You have to think about this, your majesty. My sister’s life must be in grave danger, and also we can not neglect the kingdom at the same time. It’s either you allow us lead the army or you let us lead the rescue team to save her majesty."
Henry had not been able to rest ever since he heard about his sister’s disappearance, and even his complexion looked paler and unhealthy as he had been leading the search teams for the past few days without a wink of sleep. And even though his sister’s safety was important, they could not leave the kingdom.
Hamon immediately replied with a nod of his head, "Very well then, you shall lead the army to the frontline." It occurred to him that Henry and Richard would be the right people to take his place to lead the army, however, the situation was still not reassured.
Hamon continued, "So far, I will leave the kingdom in your hands. We have a place in mind where Ara might be held, I will lead some men to search the possible places."
At this moment, Henry looked at Hamon with renewed loyalty, it was more evident that Hamon really cared for his sister deeply to the extent of leaving the kingdom in their hands for Ara’s sake. And with this, he also wanted to repay the king by taking full responsibility for his half-sister.
Henry’s thoughts wandered back to Eadlin, she must be lonely staying at the Boxton mansion alone at the moment. He had immediately left her after hearing about Ara’s kidnapping, he did not even have the chance to speak further as he was worried about his sister. However he was reassured since she was still within the Boxton mansion where she would be safe, while there were a lot of maids assigned to her who would try to keep her company.
Henry quickly dismissed the thought of Eadlin and continued to listen to Hamon’s explanation of their next moves.
Merek, who had been listening quietly to the discussion, spoke up as well, "With all due respect, my lords...I will go with his majesty to rescue her majesty."
Hamon turned to Merek with a questioning look, he had noticed Merek seemed to care about his wife so much, and he couldn’t help but wonder why, since he was usually so indifferent to others, but him, "Why?" He asked.
"I have an unpaid debt to pay to her..." Merek had once hidden his relationship with Anne from Ara, he wanted to make things even on this occasion...While he did not express it in his behavior or expression, his thoughts still lingered on his last moment with Anne. Every night he closed his eyelids, he would remember how Anne had looked at him with tearful eyes as she held his hand and begged him not to leave.
Merek still recalled every moment with her; the feeling of holding her hands, and also the time when she had hugged him and cried in his arms despite his bloody clothes. All those moment had been hunting him. It had been eating away his soul. He hadn’t been able to hold her hands, but he wanted to make sure her precious sister was safe.
Hamon did not know Merek’s motivation, but then he already had it in his mind to take him along. Thus, he nodded in affirmation, "Very well, you will go with me anyway. You’re an expert in disguises and sneaking around guarded places."
"Ah..." Merek nodded, "I will do my best."
Hamon turned to the father and son, his voice serious, "No matter what, you must protect our border...I trust you enough to leave the kingdom in your hands." He looked from Henry to Richard, and they answered simultaneously with determined faces, "Yes, Your majesty!"
