Wife of The Demon Prince
Chapter 178: A visit to the dungeon

Chapter 178: A visit to the dungeon

Claire was locked up at the far edge of the east dungeon. The dungeon was dreary and had no natural skylight, the only source of lightning was from the large torches hanging on the walls of the narrowed passage, the dungeon was unfortunately dank and cold. The whole place was filled with racking smells of rusty metals.

Ara walked through the narrowed passage, passing many empty cells. The dungeon guards were ordered by Hamon not to give Claire any special preference even with the fact that she was a nobleman’s daughter, she was locked up the same as any other criminal. Attempting to drug the crown Prince was a severe felony. Including attacking the crown princess.

As Ara walked through the dungeon stone floor with her footsteps echoing in the empty cells, countless thoughts passed through her mind. Claire and her had never been entangled in her previous life, not that she could recall though. Ara could barely even remember her. However, Anne claimed that Claire had harassed her several times, yet Ara found it perplexing, even after having lived through the future.

How did Claire come to hold such grudge and hate against her?

Eventually, Ara found Claire’s cell. She halted her footsteps. Her cell was different from the ones she’d passed by, this one had a small window with skylight coming in from there. With thick rusty metal bars. Inside was Claire, sitting in a corner with her knees drawn to her chest, her head leaning on the cold wall behind her, and her eyes were closed as if she was sleeping.

Claire’s once beautiful face was now colorless and covered in dirt. The gorgeous black dress she wore at the banquet was still on her, but was now frayed and dirty. Her raven hair matted from her time in the dungeon.

She slowly opened her eyes as if feeling someone’s presence. Their gaze met, Claire slowly stood up from the cold floor she’d been sitting on, her black orbs turned venomous as soon as she realized it was Ara.

"You bloody bitch! What brings you here? Oh, you must have come here to laugh at my condition, right? I hope you are happy now to see me behind bars!" Claire disregarded any pretence and taunted Ara openly with her lips tugged up in a crooked smile.

However, Ara hadn’t come here expecting to be treated with any formality, she was here to get answers,

"Lady Tudor...You really look in a bad state. You must have gone through a lot here, but am not here to mock your condition."

"Ha, you’ve got the guts, bitch! You’ve bloody got to be stupid. Look, It’s all because of you, I’m locked here in this hideous loathsome cell, with God damned mosquitoes feasting on my blood like bees on honey!" She screamed at Ara in frustration with her hands clenched around the thick metal bars.

Ara didn’t so much as to blink, "Regarsless of your crooked thoughts and words you make yourself believe in; you are the one who put yourself in this condition you are right now."

"What? I put myself here? In such dirty place I could barely even rest my head. Ha, you must be joking! It’s all because of you!"

"Lady Tudor, don’t try to push your misfortunes on me. If you could still remember clearly, I once gave you my warnings to stay away from my husband or anything that concerned me, but what did you do instead? Your small brain cooked up some ridiculous scheme again. I am not one to take things lightly when it comes to people I care about. You don’t expect me to just let you go after you tried to drug my husband, do you?"

Claire’s face contorted in rage, "I didn’t do anything wrong! You are the one who took him away from me. I was merely taking back what was supposed to be mine! You stole everything away from me, you are a whore and a thief. And I hate you to my bones!" She screamed at Ara in bitter desperation as she pulled on the metal bars.

This was exactly what brought Ara here, she wanted to know why Claire hated her this much.

"What have I ever done to you to hate me to this extent, Lady Tudor?" She’d never held any hard feelings against Claire before, she wondered what she’d ever done to the lady to hold such a heavy grudge.

Claire laughed darkly, her laughter echoing inside the cell,"Oh, you don’t know? Ha ha ha! You are a thief, you stole everything that belongs to me; the attention of everyone, My spotlight, the praises, and the envy of others. If you hadn’t taken all this from me from our childhood...I wouldn’t have loathed the sight of you this much. I am the daughter of marquis Tudor! I should be the one everyone notices, and not a person like you."

Ara was stunned beyond words, she had never expected such vain and unreasonably selfish things to be the reasons for Claire’s hatred.

"Lady Tudor, What reason is there to envy someone like me? Not only do you come from a good, respectable household, you are a beautiful woman as well, you’ve got everything any woman could ever ask for."

"Ha, you said it yourself, I’ve got everything, but yet you stand in my way everytime I tried to shine; you took it away from me! I’ve got beauty, but yet I don’t get the attention I deserve when you are present. And to top it off, you took away the crown Prince. If you hadn’t gotten in the picture, he would have noticed me and loved me! I despise you to the bones. I curse the day of your existence! I...HATE YOU!" The iron bars vibrated as she used all her strength to struggle against them as if she could rip them apart to step out.

Ara didn’t reply and only stared at Claire struggling. She really couldn’t make heads or tails of Claire’s reasons of hate. Claire had everything, wealth, loving parents, beauty, and could even marry a good man and lived a happy life. And yet, she couldn’t stand Ara, who doesn’t even care about all those things.

One thing Ara could point out was; regardless of who it was, Claire would still be jealous of them if they stood in her way. Whether it was Ara or not. She only happened to be Claire’s target now.

"Lady Tudor...for the first time, I feel sorry for you."

"Huh?!" Claire’s eyes flashed sharp daggers at Ara’s pity filled expression. She’d been the envy of many, everyone wanted to have what she had, but no one ever told her they pitied her, but this whore dared!

She lashed out in rage, "Ahh! Hahaha! Bloody whore! I know you’re thinking it’s over because I am locked behind these filthy bars. Dream on princess! Remember my father is a powerful man in Findara, and the queen is surely my backing. If you think it ends here...You Are dead wrong, Arabella Boxton!" She screamed, "I Claire Tudor will see to your end, I will walk on your dead corpse and use your head as a ball. Keep that in mind!" She assured. The iron bars vibrated again even louder as she pulled on them and kicked as if she could break through the thick metals.

Ara just wordlessly stared at her struggling, then decided to just leave the place. She turned away, but Claire’s anger flooded double as she turned to leave, she screamed, "You will crawl under my feet! You can take it all you want, including the crown Prince...You both will pay for this dearly, I will make sure I let him watch you die, he will regret ever putting me here. Mark my words, bloody whore!"

Ara didn’t wait to continue talking to the crazy Claire, because there was nothing more to talk about. Claire’s jealousy stemmed from her insecurities and crazy delusions, and at this point, it was beyond redeeming no matter what anyone did. She left without looking back at Claire. Ara no longer felt anything against her, but pity.
