Chapter 173: I’ve loved you for years (part 2)
"Why should I stop you? If they can be of help to you and support you to take the throne...I have nothing against it."
Hamon’s eyes darkened, she could have sworn she saw flames blazed in his red eyes, but it quickly left as it flashed, "I will still be king even if I didn’t take another wife!" He assured through clenched teeth, he looked conflicted for a while then his expression turned firm as he added more calmly,
"I have sworn my loyalty to you at the altar, and I will say it again...if I Hamon ever takes another wife, let the heavens rain hell on me. And if the heavens don’t rain hell, then you should poison me to my death, or torture me and make me a cripple to the extent I wouldn’t be able to tend to the new wife."
"Hamon...!" Ara’s eyes widened, completely dumbstruck by his words, though his words would seem somewhat funny she didn’t find it so with the seriousness in his eyes.
Hamon’s hands slowly slid from her shoulders to her hand, he held her small hand in his large palms. Then smiled sadly, " You can be cruel to me if you want, but please, don’t ever push me to take another woman as my wife."
Lines formed between Ara’s eyebrows. She didn’t want to be an evil jealous wife of the king. And why was he being this way?
"What are you trying to say...?" She asked in bewilderment.
Hamon carefully raised his hand and lifted her chin up, his voice and expression turned soft, "Have you forgotten the day I asked you to guess what I wanted to keep so badly?"
Ara suddenly recalled the words Hamon had once said to her in the log cabin.
_’If I say out my feelings to it. It might push me away and reject me, and I won’t be able to handle a rejection and I might end up doing something that will further make it hate me instead of accepting me.’_
He’d told her to guess, but she couldn’t still guess it up till now.
Ara glanced up at him as she still didn’t know what he meant. Hamon gently cupped her face in both his hands and drew closer. The distance between them was gone, she could feel his warm breath tickling her forehead. It was like she was being sucked into his blazing red eyes.
"You left me in our past life, but then in this lifetime you came to me by yourself, and even proposed to me. Moreover, I had given you a last chance to back out, but without fear you still accepted it."
The memory on the battlefield when she proposed to him flashed to her mind.
_’I’ll give you time to think carefully about this. This may be your last chance to escape.’_
Ara hadn’t forgotten anything, even when she left him in their past life. He had brought dinner and arranged a place with candles, it seemed like he was about to tell her something before she had slapped him then.
’Wait, What?!’
Suddenly, all the memories started to flood to her mind like a flowing river. It came to her one by one, until it was like a tidal wave. It gave her all the answers.
’How could that be?’
Hamon couldn’t have been in love with her. Could he? They’d met each other in Greenwood, but their relationship was that of a subordinate, and she hadn’t given him any reasons to love her. She didn’t even look like a lady then, she’d pushed him away countless times. And she’d thought he’d seen her just as a friend then.
Why would he even love someone like her? She had nothing to him then and now. He was a man with wealth, good looks, and what was more, he was the crown Prince of Findara! He had a face that could put the gods to shame.
Clearly such an attractive man wouldn’t love someone like her when he could have better looking women, with womanly characteristics.
Was it really love? Ara glanced up at him with her eyebrows knitted together, "D-do you perhaps love me then?"
Hamon’s expression hardened shortly, but he didn’t say anything and only stared down at her with an unreadable expression.
Ara laughed awkwardly and said, "I must be stupid for thinking such thing." She hurriedly tried to avoid his gaze, but Hamon’s hand was quick to capture her chin before she turned away. She noted his expression had turned more serious. The red in his eyes looked darker, making it look like black.
He pinched her cheek, "Foolish woman, I agree you’re stupid. Why would I do all the things I did for you if I didn’t love you?" He questioned with a raised eyebrow, then his eyes narrowed at her confused expression, "Don’t tell me you’re only realizing all that now after a lifetime?"
"Ha." Ara’s jaw dropped open as her heart began to pound loudly in her chest. It was really love. He’d done all that because he loved her?! She stood frozen still unable to believe her ears.
"For how long...have you loved me?"
She still couldn’t believe it. From her own point of view, she’d thought he was only being nice to her in Greenwood because she was the only female in the army. And in this lifetime, because they’d come back in time together. For long, she’d only viewed him as a Casanova who was good at making women go crazy for him. And she’d justified that he had no special feelings for her than that of a friend.
"Do you even have to ask me that? I’ve loved you right from the first time I met you on the grounds being punished in Greenwood. And I still do until now." He confessed softly.
"But...But It’s been a long time. I left Greenwood for years before the time turned back, so technically, we haven’t seen each other for years until the day on the battlefield. And...And how could you still hold that same feeling till now. What if I hadn’t gone to propose to you that day and I married someone else?" She couldn’t really believe he held on to those feelings for years without seeing her.
Ara gave him a doubtful stare, but he beamed, "I held on to those feelings because my life had always been dim and dark, like the cloudy sky. Then you appeared, my little ray of sunshine. You somehow gave me a reason to live. I’ve loved you at first sight, and even if you had married another man...I would have killed him and taken you away from him to still make you mine."
His long fingers slowly traced her eyes then drifted down to her nose and then her rosy plump lips, "One thing will forever remain certain...I will still love you no matter how many years passed. No matter how many lifetimes. All my actions towards you has never been the pretence acting you thought. I did everything because it is you, because I love you." There has once been uncertainty in his heart about how she would react if she found out about his feelings for her, but this day, in this moment, none of that mattered anymore.
Ara’s heart began to fiercely beat against her ribcage even faster at his confession, "H-how are you sure it’s love...?"
He chuckled softly,"Ha, how won’t I be sure of my own feelings? You know, only a blind man wouldn’t fall for someone like you. Those eyes of yours alone, controls me and all I want to do is give you the world. You kept me alive. Thank you, Arabella."
Ara blushed furiously at his words, soon, she felt his warm lips pressed against her forehead tenderly, it lingered there for awhile. Just that small touch of his lips on her forehead seemed to burn, it spread warmth to her heart. She felt the warmth slowly spread down to her lower abdomen. It seemed to stir up some unknown tingling feelings to her body.
He leaned down and rested his forehead on hers, he then spoke with his voice husky and low, "Wife, now that you know my feelings for you...Will you run away from me like you did before?" Although Hamon’s mouth moved as he spoke, but his eyes were resolutely fixed on hers without so much as to even blink.
"I never had any intentions of breaking our marriage, and I never regretted the day I went to propose to you. I will always stay as your wife no matter what." She promised.
A pleased smile spread on his face, "Good, because this time, even if you run away to the ends of the world, I will find you no matter what. Even if it means killing the world to bring you back. You are bound to me, you can’t run away from me again, wife."
It was almost a threat, but ridiculously to Ara, it sounded like a promise of forever. As if his possessiveness was whispering a bond for life. No matter what she looked like or where she was, he would go to her and bring her back. If she had heard this in the beginning, she might have tried to run away from him. But now, it was as if her entire being was only for him...
"My wife will forever be mine alone...I only find comfort in your presence, but please, never leave me." He spoke in a husky voice, his breath slightly falling on her lips as his forehead was still resting on hers.
Ara felt butterflies dancing in her stomach at his closeness. She couldn’t hold back any longer and hurriedly wrapped her arms around his neck and pulled him to her. He seemed taken aback by her actions, but before he could speak, she crushed her lips against his without hesitation.
