Chapter 163: Ends before it begins

[Music recommendation: SLANDER - Love is Gone]

__

Anne was about to get off the bed, when suddenly her room’s window swung opened and Merek causally jumped inside. She stared at him in astonishment. How did he come in that way?! Her room was on the third floor for goodness sake!

She stared at him wide eyed. Merek strode towards her on the bed and asked, "Are you feeling better now?"

Anne’s throat felt too sore to answer him, and she simply nodded. She noticed as relief washed over his tensed face. Last night she’d begged him to stay, and she didn’t see him today but only heard her father’s angry voice this morning. She didn’t know what she’d do if Merek was punished for her mistake.

However, Anne was relieved to see him here now. She suddenly felt Merek’s hand on her forehead and glanced up at him, she felt her heart tremble just by his small touch,

"Your temperature is normal now, you should rest some more. I’ll take my leave." His hand slipped away from her forehead, he was about to turn away,

"Merek..." She called.

He turned back towards her, a handsome brow behind his side bangs raised questioningly, "Yes?"

It was difficult for Anne to form words with her sore throat, but she felt she had to say this now before it was too late. The rain had interrupted her confession yesterday, and this could be another opportunity, there was no other way to properly express her feelings expect she boldly say it out to him, she felt the nerves twisting within her, but she had to do this now.

"What is it, miss Anne?" He asked causally.

Anne clenched tightly to the sheet, "Merek...I think I love you."

"Wh-what?" He was taken aback by her sudden confession, "What did you just say, my lady?"

Anne repeated confidently this time, "I said I love you, and I want to spend the rest of my life with you. I have loved you for long..."

"...!" Merek didn’t say anything at Anne’s unexpected confession, to be more correctly, he had no idea how to even react nor reply, he just stared back at her. Just this morning he’d been warned by Richard, he could still vividly recall the general’s words in the study room.

’I heard you are one of the servants my daughter hired, is that correct?’ Richard asked Merek.

’Yes, my Lord.’ Merek had answered.

’And is it true that you’ve been clinging to her ever since you started working for the Boxton’s?’

’...?’ Merek didn’t say anything, because he wasn’t the one clinging to Anne, but the opposite. As he didn’t reply, Richard angrily slammed the table with his fist, but Merek did not flinch nor blink, his face was expressionless as he looked Richard straight in the eyes.

’For a mere servant, you sure seem brave, what’s your name, young man?’

’Merek.’

’Last name?’

’I don’t have a last name, my Lord.’

’I see, you are really a low life to this extent. Good. From now onwards, I never want to see you any where around my daughter. I want you to quit from working in the Boxton mansion, unless you don’t value your life. I will give you your monthly wage_"

’With all due respect, my Lord. You needn’t pay me, I’ll leave the Boxton mansion if that’s what you wish. I will stay away from your daughter as well.’ Merek bowed in respect.

Back at the present, Merek locked his eyes with Anne. Even if Richard hadn’t warned him, he had no intentions of being with his daughter in the first place. Why would he let Anne ruin her life by being with him? She was a noble daughter, and he was a nobody. He had no last name to himself.

Anne was not aware of his true identity. To her, he was just a thief in the past who’d changed to a servant of the Boxton’s. His true identity was worst than that of a servant or a thief...

He was a killer right from childhood. No, even if she knew his true identity and accepted him the way he was, no nobleman would ever allow their daughter to be with someone like him. For her sake and for her family’s sake, he would rather let her be. He would never ruin her peaceful life by accepting her confession. His life was meant to be lived alone until his last breath.

Merek had only come to her room to check up on her before he’d leave, he hadn’t expected to find her awake. Moreover, confessed her love for him. He would have to end it all today, and let her free.

Merek’s face darkened as his usual stone cold expression rebuilt, his eyes cold and dark as the night as he asked,

"My lady, women take their husbands status and last name, are you aware of that?"

Anne nodded confidently, "Yes, I am."

"You know as an elite, if you marry a servant, then you will also be treated as a servant? People will look down on you... they will throw insults at you, and_"

"I’ll accept that as long as it’s with you, I’m willing to face any hardship with you by my side, even if it means living in a cabin, in a hut or even on the streets, as long as I can be with you."

Merek was again taken aback by her determination, he continued without showing any emotions on his face, "You should think properly, my lady. If you become my wife, you’d take my status and be seen as a wife of a mere servant. You will have nothing to your name, do you want that?" He questioned.

Even though Anne hadn’t asked them to get married immediately, he wanted to make her see the reality of how they could never be together. However, despite all that, Anne nodded firmly,

"Yes, I don’t care about status or wealth as long as am your wife. We can face all the hardships together, we don’t have to care what the world will think of us. I don’t mind if you have nothing, I’ll take all the responsibility of our expenses, I still have my share of fortune as the second daughter of the Boxton’s household, we will live happily and start our own family, Merek..." She rambled on.

Merek was at a loss for words. She’d always surprised him countless times with her words, but today it was even beyond anything he’d imagined. She had sometimes spoken words that no one else could easily say. He wished it was as easy as she made it sound like. Some strange emotions stirred up inside him as he watched her.

This delightful young lady loved him...

It felt soothingly good knowing someone loves you when the world hates you. But why him? She could have any nobleman out there, a nobleman with respect and pure wealth, but she chose to love him of all men? She even wanted to start a family with him...

’Annette...I am sorry, I can’t be the man you deserve. I wish_’

"Cough! Cough!" Anne’s cough broke him from his thoughts, he was about to quickly stride towards her, but realized he had to keep distance from now on. His expression turned blank,

"You should rest, I’ll take my leave." He said with no emotions in his voice or face, then coldly turned away to leave, but Anne’s words made him halt,

"Merek...I want to hear your answer to my confession not a reminder of the difference in our status."

He replied without turning to face her, "You’ve already gotten my answer from that, my lady."

"What if you were an elite, would our relationship be better? Would you have accepted me?" She asked desperately tears beginning to well up in her usually vibrant blue eyes.

Merek’s eyebrows furrowed. Wealth wasn’t the issue here, he was the issue. If they were to go through with it, he wasn’t a poor man, however he wasn’t one to live a noble life either, nor would he be able to be the man she deserved to spend the rest of her life with.

"Wake up to reality, my lady. If I wasn’t your servant, I wouldn’t be here listening to such nonsense words of confession. I hope this ends here, I don’t want to have anything to do with you again." He stated coldly with his back to her, he didn’t want to see the pain in her eyes.

"Merek..." The tears rolled down her cheeks as her lips trembled. His words stabbed her straight in the heart, she felt as if a needle pierced through her heart twisting it’s way agonizingly in her chest. She’d never felt this way before, it was as if the world she’d built in her my mind crushed her. She clenched her aching heart as the tears continued to pour out.

Merek didn’t turn to see her face, but he knew she was crying with the sound of her sobbing. He also felt a strange pain in his heart, he wanted to turn around and hug her, comfort her, he wanted to console her in his arms, but he couldn’t do that. Anne didn’t know what she was saying, once she realized he wasn’t the right person for her, she’d look back on this day and regret ever loving him.

Without another word, he made to leave through the window, but heard Anne’s voice again, "Merek! Please...don’t go. I will never complain about anything ever. I promise to be a good and supporting partner, I..."

Merek’s feet paused at her words. He couldn’t bear to turn towards her. He had promised to protect her, but it turned out he’d hurt her. Why couldn’t she just hate him? He hated these feelings he was having right now. Merek’s expression changed to a pained expression for the first time, however his back was to her, so Anne didn’t notice.

"You deserve better, my lady. You will stop loving me with time. There is someone meant for you out there, but not me. I am sorry, I can’t return your feelings."

After saying that, Merek didn’t wait to hear her reply and swiftly jumped out of the window. Anne slowly sat on the floor beside her bed as she clenched her chest, her tears fell out uncontrollable. It hurt so much. As the cold breeze blew in from the opened window, Anne hugged her knees to her chest and buried her face between her knees.

"Merek."

"Merek." She cried as her shoulders shook repeatedly. Anne cried until she felt nothing but numbness.
