Wife of The Demon Prince -
Chapter 145: Don’t leave
Chapter 145: Don’t leave
In the Boxton mansion. Since the wedding was over, some of the servants Anne had hired were starting to leave as she’d only hired them for a short while. But some decided to work there permanently. However it had come as a sudden shock when Merek had suddenly declared that he’d be leaving the mansion to go and work in the palace.
She’d settled down her mind and decided to make him hers, she’d even dreamt of their wedding countless times, she’d been making lunch for him almost everyday, but after his declaration, she felt as if everything was coming to an end. Her dreams...
"Merek...please don’t go. Did you really mean it?" She asked.
Merek nodded, "Yes."
Anne’s clear blue eyes trembled even more at his answer. "But why? Why would you suddenly want to work in the palace?"
"Because I heard it pays well..."
"Please stay, I’ll pay you double. I’ll even give you weakly bonus."
"..."
Merek stared at Anne’s determined face, he then let out a small sigh of frustration. He’d failed to capture the rat in the mansion, and now that Ara was married to the crown Prince, he was ordered to return and continue to be her bodyguard. Moreover, the person might follow her to the palace. He had to complete his mission before putting anything else first.
For the past few weeks he’d spent in the Boxton mansion, Anne had been so generous to him, she hadn’t treated him like a servant the way other noble women would, she’d even bring him food even after he’d repeatedly tell her he didn’t want it.
All the Boxton servants were already aware of how she’d been treating him, and some were even jealous of the special treatment he was receiving. Gossip had started to go around the mansion of how they were suspected to be having an affair. Sometimes he’d warn them or scare them off with his eyes. And now that it was time for him to leave, she was making it hard for him.
Even if he leaves, he’d still like to protect her in the shadows, but he didn’t want to be anywhere close to her anymore. Her presence had begun to spell danger, to his dismay it wasn’t the kind of danger that meant bloodshed like he was used to, it was a whole different kind of danger in the form of strange feelings, ones that he couldn’t comprehend, and for the first time in his life, he was now faced with a problem he couldn’t solve with his dagger or bloodshed.
_What should I do now?_
Merek, who was thinking of a way suddenly heard footsteps of some servants approaching from the other side, though the maids were some distance away, however his sensitive ears managed to pick up on their conversation.
"You are right, the young mistress of the mansion has been clinging around the servant lately, I suspect they’re up to something behind closed doors."
"Yes, she even cooks for him. I wonder what sort of relationship they share for her to go to that extent."
"They must be having an affair of course. What a shame for a young lady to be flirting around with a servant."
Merek couldn’t help but sigh in frustration again, he was indignant that they were once again gossiping about her and smearing her name. The maids never learn, he’d scared them countless times whenever they’d gossip. And now they were doing it again, it seems he’d have to teach them a harder lesson next time.
Anne glanced up at him as she heard him sigh, "What’s wrong_"
Before she could complete her words, Merek grabbed her waist and swiftly lifted her up with one hand before he hurriedly took her to the closest storage room around them so that the maids wouldn’t see them together again and speak badly of her. He placed her down and closed the door to the storage room, the room turned slightly dark as if it was nighttime.
As the room was small, Anne’s back was pressed against the hard wall with Merek right in front of her. She could feel his warm breath tickling her forehead, it was an intimate position.
"What_" she was about to speak again, but he pleased his finger on her lips to keep her quiet, "Shh, let them pass, I don’t want them to see us together again." He whispered, his voice low causing her cheeks to heat up even more.
Merek didn’t want her name to be tarnished, as he had no plans of marrying her, with such rumors something as big as that would quickly spread to people’s ears, the nobles wouldn’t take such an issue lightly, he wouldn’t want the maids to see them together again, if the words spread outside other than ruining her image it would most likely prevent her from getting a husband in the future.
Anne pursed her lips and replied In a low voice as well, "It’s doesn’t matter if they see us together, I don’t care what they say."
Merek’s eyebrows furrowed, "They will talk badly of you, and gossip about a mistress having a close relationship with her male servant."
"They wouldn’t dare do that." She retorted stubbornly.
"Trust me, they will. Take my words and you won’t get involved in any baseless scandal."
Anne’s face scrunched up as she thought through his words. He was right, if her brother or father should hear about this...She might be in trouble.
Merek stared down at her with the corner of his mouth slightly quirked up which she didn’t notice, she then looked up, "Fine, we will be careful next time. You can eat in my room then."
She said it as if they were really having the affair. Merek sighed, "I won’t be here to do so, I’ll be leaving for the palace soon."
"Please stay, don’t leave." Anne pouted at him like an abandoned puppy. Merek furrowed his brows at the sight and swallowed the words he wanted to say.
_I have to leave, you deserve someone better than me, Annette._ he thought internally.
He couldn’t let her persuade him into staying, being with her would only hurt her in the future. He was a dangerous person, his work was dangerous, he’d killed so many people, so many that he’d lost count. He was trained to assassinate...with his job, he knew someday his death would also come. So why let his emotions get the best of him when it wouldn’t last?
Merek wasn’t completely unaware of why Anne was treating him so nicely, when a woman was interested in a man it would get quite obvious especially when she wasn’t trying to hide it at all, but being in that sort of relationship with someone wasn’t a privilege someone like him could enjoy, he didn’t deserve it, he didn’t deserve her.
Anne deserved to be with a noble, just like her. He was just an assassin!
Merek’s face turned blank as he glanced down at her, "Miss Anne...I don’t want to stay in your mansion anymore, because you’re making me uncomfortable with how clingy you are. It suffocates me all the time." He remarked firmly.
In truth, Merek needed to leave and return to his old life of being a soldier and a bodyguard. Her behavior towards him had nothing to do with him leaving, but it was a convenient excuse even if it’d hurt her. After all, he had no plans to stay in the Boxton mansion anymore.
Anne’s face turned pale and her blue eyes trembled, "You...you mean my behavior towards you is uncomfortable...?"
With his blank expression he nodded, "Yes, it is. Moreover, I don’t like people gossiping about me, and I don’t feel comfortable working with someone who knows my past as a thief. I have to start afresh in a place where no one knows me, I can’t stay here anymore."
That was another perfect reason for her to let him leave. Merek thought.
However, he’d forgotten he was dealing with Anne over here, she wasn’t like most women. Anne held his shirt stubbornly, "Still, I won’t let you leave...your past is safe with me."
Merek glanced at her surprised as if someone had knocked his head off. If it was any other person, they’d have let him go already with the words he’d said, it should have hurt her ego as she was a noble. But she held his shirt tightly and began to ramble, "I’ll be less clingy, and no one will know I cook for you, I’ll give you weakly bonuses. Yeah! You can’t leave yet, remember you signed a paper that said you can only leave after a year of service? I’ll even make your work easier if you stay, I’ll help if you want, and_"
"Lady Anne." He called to stop her rambling.
Anne’s face stiffened as she knew what his soft voice meant, she then said firmly, "You won’t leave the mansion unless I allow it. I am your master, you’ve signed the paper and you can’t go against it until you finish your one year of service!"
Merek was speechless, she wasn’t wrong. He’d completely forgotten about the paper she made him sign! He could only leave after a year.
Anne clutched at his collar and his face drew closer to hers, she then pouted in a childish manner, completely different from the firm voice she’d used earlier, "You- you can’t leave, I won’t let you leave. Please stay with me, please, please, I’ll do anything you want me to." She pleaded and glanced up at him with her puppy-like cute eyes. Merek didn’t know what to say anymore at this point, he felt helpless.
He sighed, which he’d be doing a lot lately. He looked down at how she gripped tightly to his collar then glanced at her cute eyes. Whenever she gave him that look, for some reason he always felt like giving her anything she asked for. She’d been using that on him lately whenever he refused to eat with her.
What was he going to do now with Anne in the picture? He was stuck between his mission and his emotions. He really had to look for a way to leave this mansion before she turned him into some weakling!
