Chapter 88: Chapter 88 Who Let You Feed the Lost Ones! (9/10)
"Ah! He stole my stuff!"
"Does anybody care? Does nobody care?"
Instructor Ding shouted angrily, but to no avail, because at that moment he was the only one dead, while the other three stream viewers and Michelangelo were still alive, so he was the only one in the dead players’ voice channel.
Instructor Ding could only watch the actions of his teammates from a spectator’s perspective, unable to communicate with them at all.
He could only be resurrected after everyone had died or when both "a certain amount of time had passed" and "someone had brought back a key item" conditions were met.
Instructor Ding quickly grew disheartened and could only watch what his other teammates were doing.
The three stream viewers indeed encountered a Gazing Statue, but luckily, they could handle it since there was only one statue.
As for Michelangelo...
Instructor Ding was fuming, "Is this what you call ’scientific research’?"
There was Michelangelo, not far from the respawn point, with a pickaxe in hand, working on a large rock.
Based on how long players held down the left mouse button, the character would strike with varying force, and Michelangelo was using this to actually carve the rock!
Besides, next to the rock, there was a deep pit, dark and seemingly bottomless, with no telling what he was up to.
Instructor Ding switched perspectives and finally saw the three stream viewers meet at the respawn point.
"We got lucky this time, great loot!"
"Where’s the Instructor? Shouldn’t he have been back by now?"
Instructor Ding respawned at the respawn point with a dark face, "Damn it! My Divine Fire was stolen by ’Tooth Decay’!"
"Tooth Decay? Didn’t he quit the game?" The three stream viewers were surprised.
Instructor Ding briefly recounted what had happened, especially emphasizing that "Tooth Decay turned me into one of the Lost Ones, and then the two Lost Ones together moved all of my stuff," his teeth itching with hatred.
The three stream viewers were shocked. There was a mechanism like this in the game?
So the guy quits the game but doesn’t let go, and even becomes a monster in there, becoming a Cyber Tombstone?
"What do we do now?" asked one of the stream viewers.
Instructor Ding had already purchased a new shovel, "Put the materials you’ve stolen here for now, and let Michelangelo hold on to them. We’re going to settle things with those two Lost Ones! We must take back our cluster of Divine Fire!"
Instructor Ding set out with the three stream viewers again, heading for the spot where he was ambushed by the Lost Ones.
As expected, there was nothing there.
But Instructor Ding was not disheartened, he had seen the Lost Ones carrying things away right before he died.
"Search! Even if we have to dig three feet into the ground, we must find that beast today!"
...
"Ding!"
After some time, the bell rang again.
Chen Tingquan, Li Wenhao, and the others who were outside hurriedly gathered around.
Through their hard work over this period, the "ruins cleanup work" outside was highly effective; the remaining materials had been moved to the side of the Divine Fire High Platform, reducing the erosion from the mist. The collapsed construction debris had also been mostly cleared up.
They were just waiting for the Divine Fire and the materials to be in place before starting a new round of construction.
Instructor Ding, Michelangelo, and the other three stream viewers appeared.
Instructor Ding proudly presented a cluster of Divine Fire, "Take it!"
Li Wenhao hastily took it and delivered it to the Divine Fire Altar to reignite.
The Divine Fire was rekindled, and though the flame was still weak, it at least dispersed the mist around it, allowing them to continue construction.
The others also started to bring out some materials one after another.
Before Liang Chun and Chen Tingquan could ask, Instructor Ding was already eagerly boasting about his glorious deeds.
"Hey, do you guys think it’s creepy that ’Tooth Decay’ has appeared in the Divine Realm and turned into a monster? I got stealth attacked by him after I first stole the Divine Fire!"
"Those Lost Ones can climb walls; they scale those smooth walls as if they were flat ground. They can also capture and infect people—I got turned into a Lost One myself!"
"But after I was resurrected, I organized a team and chased after them. After a fierce battle, we finally managed to snatch the Divine Fire back!"
"How about that, I’m pretty awesome, right?"
Michelangelo coughed lightly, "Instructor, I think you’d better tell the truth. Next time we enter the Divine Realm as the Flame Thief, it might not be us. If you don’t confess the mess you’ve left behind, the next person who goes in might get screwed..."
Instructor Ding deflated immediately, "Alright, I’ll tell the truth... We did manage to snatch back some of the Divine Fire and materials, that’s the good news. But there’s a small piece of bad news, which is... that the Lost Ones may have overrun the Divine Realm, and there’s an ’über-Lost One’ that has merged with a Heaven’s Guardian..."
Liang Chun and Chen Tingquan were both stunned, "What the hell? How did the Lost Ones overrun the place?"
Urged on by everyone’s questions, Instructor Ding briefly recounted what had happened in the Divine Realm.
He and three net friends pursued their target, but visibility was low due to darkness, and the place was huge. To avoid the risk of powerful monsters being wiped out in a single encounter, they decided to search in pairs.
As it turned out, the other pair heard Instructor Ding’s voice, even engaged in inexplicable chit-chat, and then got ambushed!
Clearly, the game was incredibly crafty. The Lost Ones would record players’ spoken words from within the game and then randomly play them back. What’s more, it often sounded quite convincing!
Since players typically don’t talk frequently in this game, any spoken word is usually meant for seeking communication or responding to teammates. Thus, when the Lost Ones played back a voice recording, it could easily match up with the real players.
Luckily, the other net friend reacted swiftly, managed to escape the encirclement of three Lost Ones, and successfully found Instructor Ding. Together, they started a 3v3 manly battle.
But the more they fought, the more Lost Ones appeared!
Indeed, the Lost Ones could be killed with a shovel, but it took three hits. Once a Lost One captured a player, they couldn’t move and had to rely on teammates to be freed.
But in the heat of panic, coordination often went awry, and before you know it, the Lost Ones’ ranks swelled with another member.
Fortunately, Instructor Ding discovered that the Lost Ones were considered medium-sized monsters, meaning they could be grappled by Warriors!
So the four of them managed to kill off a bunch of Lost Ones with two grappling and two shoveling, and they successfully recaptured the Divine Fire and materials.
But many more Lost Ones had run off to who knows where...
As they were evacuating, Instructor Ding also spotted ’Lost One No. 1,’ also known as ’Tooth Decay.’
Seeing an old enemy inflamed his rage. Instructor Ding handed the Divine Fire over to the others for safekeeping and, without another word, grabbed a shovel and chased after it!
Everything was going smoothly at first. Instructor Ding, relying on the skills from his former career as a professional player, dodged the Lost One’s grasps and even landed two shovel blows.
Just when he was about to deliver the killing blow, a new monster appeared!
This monster, called ’Heaven’s Guardian,’ was a movable hollow armor wielding a Divine Staff. It would kill players at long range upon detection.
Instructor Ding was prepared to go all in, to trade one-for-one with the Lost One, but unexpectedly, the two monsters fused!
The Heaven’s Guardian armor split open, the Lost One was sucked inside, donning the full set of armor, transforming into a completely new monster!
Afterward, ’Lost One No. 1’ clothed in Heaven’s Guardian armor and wielding the Divine Staff bore the name ’Lost One - My Brother’s Diabetes Gave Me ’Tooth Decay’,’ and pointed the Divine Staff at Instructor Ding!
Instructor Ding instantly vaporized.
...
"So that’s the situation," Instructor Ding said, somewhat embarrassedly making a "scratching his head" gesture.
Chen Tingquan’s face darkened, "So you’re saying, initially there were only two Lost Ones, which could have been grappled and killed with three shovel blows, but you guys kept feeding them more ’player heads,’ resulting in a dozen Lost Ones roaming the Divine Realm now??
"And ’Tooth Decay,’ one of the Lost Ones, even merged with the armor of Heaven’s Guardian? He completed a super evolution?"
Instructor Ding pointed to the materials beside him, "But we also successfully brought out the Divine Fire and materials, right?"
Chen Tingquan made a "middle finger" gesture, "Then I really should congratulate you!"
"Wait a minute!"
Liang Chun suddenly noticed a loophole, "The Lost Ones can merge with Heaven’s Guardian? Then I have a bold idea. What if ’Tooth Decay’ comes online right now, what would happen?"
Instructor Ding’s eyes lit up, "Exactly! If ’Tooth Decay’ can continue with his previous body, wouldn’t he be the Heaven’s Guardian now? Wouldn’t that make him invincible? Quick, who has his contact information, get him online!"
