Chapter 569: Chapter 552: Beat Them Silently One by One
In other games, when a character dies, the game automatically switches to another character, and you only respawn after all your characters on the field are dead.
But "Endless Fantasy Legend 2" is obviously a bit different. It introduces a main character, who is the first in the lineup, and right now, that default character is the Hero.
When the other characters die, you can continue fighting, but when the lead character dies, it’s considered battle failure and you return to the respawn point.
Zhuge Jun scratched his head, "So... did I just get killed by a minor monster because it had an elemental advantage over me?
"It’s like it was born to counter me!"
The Hero has both Wood attribute and Fire attribute. Combining these should make for a great combo when fighting most monsters, but against Fire attribute monsters, that same Wood attribute skill that buffs you becomes purely a traitorous skill.
Just after buffing myself, a single blow from the enemy’s fire punch sets me aflame.
You suffer from increased damage multipliers and are also afflicted with a high-damage DoT (damage over time).
Moreover, another important point is that NPC stats are set higher than those of players by default, so the damage from triggering elemental reactions is naturally more exaggerated.
"This is forcing everyone to play with no damage taken, right? Isn’t it absurd for a mobile game to have such difficulty?
"Or wait—is this big guy actually a boss I should be avoiding?
"Sending players to Fire Country right off the bat looks like a trap from the developers!"
Zhuge Jun couldn’t help but make a weak complaint, foreseeing that most of the monsters and enemies in Fire Country would be of the Fire Attribute. Wouldn’t that make the Hero useless?
One Woods attribute skill is like a damage boost for the enemy, and one Fire attribute skill scratching the enemy is like tickling them.
In Wood Country, this set of skills would allow the Hero to strut around with ease, tearing through the forest like a hot knife through butter. But in Fire Country, it turned the mighty Hero into an easy target for bullying.
However, shortly after, a prompt appeared on the screen.
"Oh? Heavy attacks have a GP (Guard Point) function?
"There’s a special GP maneuver during the bow’s aiming process?
"Why didn’t you mention these sweet moves earlier!"
Zhuge Jun’s eyes brightened at the revelation.
There are many types of weapons in the game. For example, the Hero is defaulted with a One-Handed Sword and a Shield, the little lass Xi Yun wields a spear, and there are other weapons such as two-handed weapons, magic implements, and bows and arrows.
As the protagonist, the Hero has the natural advantage of being able to wield any weapon and switch to that weapon’s attack module.
Just so happens, the Hero has had a bow and arrow in their inventory from the very beginning.
In Sword and Shield mode, holding down the attack button results in a heavy attack, but perhaps considering input delays, the character will immediately perform a normal attack before the heavy strike.
And when that heavy attack happens to coincide with an enemy’s attack, you can trigger a GP effect.
This is somewhat similar to the "parrying" in "Ascension," except the difficulty and reward of executing it is higher.
After all, a parry in Ascension is instantaneous, whereas a heavy attack has a considerable wind-up.
If the parry is successful, the enemy will reel a little, giving you a chance to sneak in a couple of hits.
Filling up the enemy’s balance bar will give you over five seconds of opportunity to attack, allowing you to unleash skills or go for a finishing move.
Additionally, there’s also a parry in the bow and arrow mode.
The bow’s aim and shoot are controlled by the left trigger, and if you press the normal attack button while holding the left trigger, the character performs a stylish turnaround slide step.
This move also has a GP effect.
"Okay, let’s give it a try."
Zhuge Jun advanced confidently once more, only to be hammered back in a few seconds.
"What the heck! This GP isn’t that easy to use!"
It must be said, GPs always seem amazing in theory but are difficult to master in practice. Both GP methods have a lengthy wind-up; they require good timing and an understanding of the enemy’s behavior to pull off perfectly.
Zhuge Jun, slightly frustrated, looked over at Hou Ji and saw that he was also struggling to practice the GP, getting hammered by monsters to the brink of death and back.
"Fine. If they’re placing monsters with this level of difficulty at the start, mobile gamers are in for a treat."
Zhuge Jun felt an odd sense of sympathy.
Such difficulty would be a lot even for an action game, let alone a mobile game.
However, just then, Zhuge Jun had a sudden epiphany, considering another possibility.
"Hey, wait a second, this isn’t an action game, why am I trying to play it like one? I don’t need to perform any GP moves!
"Why not try elemental reactions instead?
"Damn it, this game is so tricky, introducing GP maneuvers right now just to mislead players on purpose, huh?"
Zhuge Jun’s gears turned quickly, and without another word, he switched to the little lass Xi Yun and stepped forward again.
The hulking enemy charged over as fearsome as ever, but as Zhuge Jun played Xi Yun, he unleashed a small skill.
An Earth Element spear broke through from beneath the ground to momentarily stun the monster while wrapping himself in a protective shield.
The fire punch hit the shield, and it was as if nothing happened!
Obviously, after losing the Traitor’s Wood Element, fire and earth could not react, so there was no extra damage, and the shield was enough to absorb it.
Zhuge Jun poked a few times and, once his energy had filled up, unleashed his ultimate skill!
A small Water Element dragon appeared and "pfft" sprayed out a fan-shaped water jet, reacting with the fire element on the enemy, producing a vaporization effect!
The monster’s blood bar visibly dropped by a large margin.
"I’m telling you, this is the right way to solve it!"
Zhuge Jun’s face showed pleasure; however, the next second, he saw this hulking figure somehow pull out a black iron greatsword and swing it horizontally!
Zhuge Jun got a fright and hastily dodged backward, but the swing was a slow one, perfectly catching him on the dodge’s recovery.
With a "snap," the already depleted shield shattered instantly!
Zhuge Jun got another scare, because he thought he had dodged out of the attack’s range, but a closer look revealed that there was a massive golden afterimage surrounding the greatsword, an afterimage that was obviously part of the Gold Element force and possessed damage effects as well.
An Earth Element shield’s absorption rate varied against different attribute attacks, and it was noticeably more fragile against the attack of the Gold Element.
That slash directly caused Xi Yun to stagger.
And the hulking figure followed up with a fiery punch!
"It’s okay, I still have a lot of health, I shouldn’t die...
"Hey, what the hell! What’s going on?"
Zhuge Jun saw the familiar words appear on the screen: Vaporization!
Only this time, he wasn’t the one causing the vaporization but the one being vaporized.
Because Xi Yun’s ultimate skill summoned a water dragon, which not only wet the enemy but also wet himself.
So, water hitting fire is vaporization, and fire hitting water is also vaporization!
The damage multiplier for these two types of vaporization would be slightly different, with water as the superior element to fire, so the multiplier would be higher when using water.
However, since the monster’s attributes were much higher than the player’s, even the lower vaporization reaction was more than a player could withstand.
After struggling for a while, Zhuge Jun returned to the respawn point, somewhat questioning his life.
"So both my character’s skills have a bit of a traitor element to them?
"One hangs grass on me, the other hangs water, and when the enemy hits with fire, I’m silenced.
"Oh right, there’s also a Gold Element attribute, and my Earth Attribute shield isn’t very effective.
"Wood and Water attributes obviously aren’t much use either.
"What can counter Gold? Fire? Lightning?
"Theory says fire should work, but the opponent’s resistance to fire is very high, afraid it won’t be very effective. Lightning should react with fire, right? That should be the best option.
"But I don’t even have any Lightning Attribute characters!"
Zhuge Jun felt somewhat defeated, not expecting to engage in a battle of wits with a monster just after leaving Newbie Village.
While he wanted some challenging battles, did they have to be this difficult? It’s just a mobile game, right?
"Could it be... is this game hinting that I need to ’gacha’ now?
"Can’t be that shameless, right?"
Zhuge Jun silently looked at the gacha interface in the upper right corner, which was already unlocked, his lips twitching slightly.
Obviously, the optimal solution at this time was a Lightning Element character to synergize with Xi Yun’s Water Element attacks.
Lightning-Water reaction, Lightning-Fire reaction, Lightning-Gold reaction, all should be very effective in countering this big brute.
But shouldn’t this kind of character be given directly to players?
They’re really going to put it in the card pool and make players draw for it themselves?
If players don’t want to spend money, wouldn’t that force them to pay?
Zhuge Jun wasn’t sure about this and could only proceed to open the character summoning interface.
Then his vision went dark.
Because in this gacha interface, it was clear to see that six Permanent Five-star characters were available.
These six Five-star characters could be roughly understood as akin to the "Permanent Pool" in general gacha games, which is the card pool that is always available to draw from.
When new characters come out, they generally enter the "UP Pool", meaning that when drawing from this pool, the probability of new characters appearing is increased.
The probability of drawing a specific Five-star character from the Permanent Pool is one in six, and only Permanent Characters; although the UP Pool could also yield off-banner characters, the probability of drawing featured characters is much higher.
Thus, drawing from the UP Pool rather than the Permanent Pool is a basic common sense when playing these kinds of games.
"Endless Fantasy Legend 2" is still in its early beta phase, so there is no UP Pool, only the Permanent Pool.
That’s not too strange, but what’s bizarre is that all six permanent characters are uniformly Wood Attribute!
Most of these are familiar faces from the Wood Country region, using Wood attributes is reasonable.
But to fight against the Fire Country, this is not reasonable!
Zhuge Jun felt as though everything went dark: "Doesn’t that mean that even if I draw a Five-star character, I’ll still be countered!"
