1. The Future

“Wow! It’s so cute! Thank you, Ran-chan!”

“I’m glad you like it. But are you sure you wanted a pitch black stuffed animal?”

“Yesh! This is perfect!”

Today, in our free time, the four of us, Gil-san, Kei-san, Maryla-san, and I, had come to Ran-chan’s shop to pick up those things. Those things, were, of course, stuffed animals!

“I can’t believe you ordered a Shadow Eagle stuffed animal. You really love Gilnandio, don’t you, Meg-chan.”

“Yesh! I wuv him! So fluffy!”

“Just like you, Meg-chan! Kei-san, thank you for the kyatru stuffed animal! I’ll treasure it!”

“I’m glad you like it.”

Maryla-san and I were excitedly chatting outside the shop. And Gil-san, with a puzzled look on his face.

“Why the long face? You can’t hate being loved so much, can you?”

“Well…”

“Ahaha, it’s not that he hates it, Lagrange. Gilnandio just doesn’t know how to react.”

“Hmm, what a troublesome personality.”

“…I’m here to place an order.”

I’m glad he didn’t hate it. Relieved, I rubbed my cheek against the stuffed animal. Ah, blissful.

Gil-san was here to order new combat clothes, since his had been destroyed. Apparently, Maille-san’s designs were a bit too flashy, so he decided to order them from Ran-chan. Ran-chan also loved flashy things, but she’s reliable because she properly caters to the customers’ wishes. As expected of a professional. And speaking of professionals, just like with my combat attire, Ran-chan was able to easily incorporate Ortus’s techniques, it made me think she was extraordinary. So mysterious!

We quickly returned to the guild after finishing up. There was still a lot to do.

It’d been about a week since then, and the celebratory mood was still going strong. The Demon King, who seemed like he was planning to stay indefinitely, had been dragged out of Ortus by Kron-san, who’d finally snapped, on the third day.

“Meg! You absolutely, absolutely have to come visit me at the castle! I’ll come pick you up!”

I wanted to see the Demon King again, and I was a bit curious about Demon Castle, so of course I wanted to go, but his desperation made me smile wryly. Well, let’s meet again, Father-shama!

The celebrations continued, but of course, we were also working on rebuilding the city. Those who’d evacuated had returned, and we were repairing the outer walls, damaged by the monsters, and the houses that had apparently been destroyed during the battle at the guild. It was cool how efficient everyone was! And, well, it couldn’t be helped that Juma-kun was staring blankly into the distance, muttering, “I’m not allowed to drink for a while…” Apparently those were the houses he’d destroyed! But he quickly recovered, declaring that he’d make up for it by completing requests. Good luck!

“I don’t wanna be friends with you guys!”

When we arrived at the guild, it seemed like Epink, who had been asleep for about five days, had woken up and was causing a ruckus. We exchanged glances and headed over to where he was. Reki had apparently been trying to win him over and had even invited him to join Ortus! But it seemed like he wouldn’t obediently say, “Yes, please.” Epink, having regained his mental energy, had become like a troublesome teenager. My, my, puberty’s rough.

“Oh my, what an energetic child. Why don’t you join my guild then?”

“Ahn? Who the hell are you?”

“M-Mara-shan!?”

As we were agonizing over what to do with Epink, Mara-san suddenly appeared behind us. I wonder if it’s an Elf trait, to be able to approach from behind without being detected? My heart was beating hard.

“Are you finished with the village?”

“Yes, I’ll leave the rest to those who are staying. I need to get started on recruiting new members as quickly as possible, you know?”

Mara-san winked when Gil-san asked this. She was like a young girl. Elves are truly a race that doesn’t show their age.

“Now then, how about it? I like you, you’re full of energy. We’ll be using Nemo as a foundation, and completely reforming it. Your salary will be based on your performance, but you won’t have to worry about lodging.”

She started her recruitment speech, smiling gently at Epink. Epink seemed taken aback, but he was willing to listen.

“I-I said who the hell are you…!? ”

“This is the former boss’s older sister. Show some respect, Epink.”

“R-Razield!?”

It was Razield, the Blue Flame Oni, who answered Epink’s question. Such a large, and scary-looking, oni. He’d been taken away for questioning, but as you can see, he was now following Mara-san. I wonder what happened?

“W-Well, if Razield trusts you, then I guess I could join you guys!”

“Kangaro, don’t you dare…!”

“Eek…!”

Epink answered, seemingly resigned. Razield glared at him, his voice full of anger. Epink cowered, and so did I. It can’t be helped, scary is scary! And it was Mara-san who stopped Razield.

“Now, now, stop it, Razzy. My new guild will respect independence, you know?”

“M-My apologies, Martinelshiela-sama!”

“Razzy…!?”

Razield was incredibly obedient. That intimidating oni, being called by a nickname and completely tamed by Mara-san…? Could she be a beast tamer? We all stared at her, and Mara-san, reading our minds perfectly, placed a finger on her lips and smiled enticingly.

“It’s a secret.”

Ah, yeah. There’s no way we could question her further. I’m sure her new guild will be fine. It even felt like they’d quickly obtain the Special-grade title. I thought this as I watched Mara-san, Razield, and Epink leaving, to recruit more members. We can’t lose either!

We then headed to our respective posts. My post, of course, was my dedicated counter. When I passed through the entrance to the guild, I saw Nika-san and Kei-san standing and chatting. They must have been on break.

“Oh, welcome back, Meg-chan. We were just talking about you.”

“Fueh!? About me?”

“You know, thinking back, Meg was amazing back there!”

I was desperate back then. I’m more embarrassed than happy to be praised so much…!

“How were you able to do something so bold, Meg?”

“Yeah, I’m also curious about that.”

Well, it’s only natural to wonder about that, a usually timid little girl, always lacking confidence and quick to cry, suddenly acting that way. I’ll be honest.

“I shaw the future, just a wittle bit. Sho I thought it would be okay. That it would work out.”

“That special Elf ability. …What kind of future?”

They all stared at me with anticipation in their eyes at Gil-san’s question. Hmm, I could tell them, but…

“It’s a shecwret!”

“Ehhh,” several voices exclaimed. Others just sighed, seeming resigned. They all knew better than to pry.

It wasn’t like I couldn’t tell them, but I figured they’d think, “You did all that based on such a vague future?”

But that future was enough for me. I’d lacked confidence. It told me that everyone would be okay, that we could overcome this.

“Excuse me, I have a question…”

“Ah, yes!”

A customer I’d never seen before. Time for work! I trotted over as everyone smiled and watched over me.

That’s right.

Because the future I saw was—

“Welcome!”

This. Everyone smiling, having fun at Ortus!

“Welcome to the Special-grade Guild, Ortush!”
