Chapter 680: Chapter 677: ’I won’t hurt you again.
There is a concept in science called "quantum entanglement."
When a pair of particles, spinning on the same or different orbits, achieve a state of dynamic equilibrium, even if they are far apart, if one of them rotates one extra circle to the left, the other must inevitably rotate one circle to the right to maintain this "dynamic equilibrium."
Using this principle, people can easily surpass the speed of light, transmitting information instantly and without delay—if one particle cannot be observed temporarily, people can infer the state of the other particle through the known one.
Grid time is similar to this principle; it is not a "from past to future" linear time, but a three-dimensional timeline of dynamic equilibrium, forming a layered grid of three dimensions over two dimensions, and two dimensions over one. Any change in one dimension will affect the data in another dimension. Thus, using the infinitely resettable "Two Dimensions" world, the system could propose the firewall passwords for the "One Dimension" based on the infinite calculations of the "Two Dimensions."
"Two Dimensions" is akin to the particle that can be observed, and "One Dimension" to the particle that cannot be observed.
After the world "downgraded" into a dataized world, human beings’ defense was to stack firewalls with data. "Downgrading" is like everyone hiding in a computer, and "Ta Wei" as the invader plundering the "Source of Civilization," had to find the startup password.
By continuously introducing variables into the "Two Dimensions," reducing variance—they could compute passwords that make the "One Dimension" more secure.
This is the principle of the "Dawn System."
Acto made full use of this principle, combined with his top human intelligence, and constructed three-dimensional defense barriers which allowed human civilization to continue for as long as 102 years and possibly even longer.
"..." Su Ming’an stood in place.
His heart was still filled with shock.
He thought the time in the Ninth World was linear, but it turned out to be a grid. He thought the Dawn War was like returning to the past in Qiongdi, where he became Acto to rewrite history, but it turned out to involve layering three dimensions over two over one. He once thought "Kaius Tower" was just another historical loop, a game instance played twice with the same tactics, but their nature turned out to be utterly different.
When everyone thought the world was on the first layer, it was actually in the atmosphere.
Time layered with space, space layered with time, dimensions overlapping time and space. Things were unexpectedly complex ...
"..."
He furrowed his brow, while Lin Guang was still watching him.
Snowflakes fell on Lin Guang’s white hair, almost merging with the hair strands. When looking at Su Ming’an, his expression sometimes appeared confused yet clear, as if it had shed all impurities.
"Programs do not know that they are programs," Lin Guang said. "But Lewis, don’t be sad, I don’t think you’re a program. You’re different from others. Neither of us are programs. You’re a unique being in this repeated simulation. You’re a good person."
Su Ming’an stalled, then realized what Lin Guang was comforting him about.
Lin Guang thought Su Ming’an was still wrestling with the idea of "whether I am a program", but in reality, Su Ming’an’s thoughts had already leapt far ahead, to the Ruler’s Quest.
As for whether he was a program, Su Ming’an had only doubted himself briefly. To him, everything he was experiencing was the product of his own thoughts; he did not regret his choices, so this point was not worth lingering over.
His personal needs had been pushed to the bottommost level; nothing other than a "Perfect Pass" could affect him anymore. If he continued to play the game with high emotions, taking himself too seriously, it would be hard for him to last until the end.
Considering this concept was of no help, he planned to continue moving forward.
Only by seeing himself as an "expendable" or a program for a perfect game could he maintain the optimal mindset for the game, otherwise, he could never endure the over forty deaths he had already suffered, let alone face the hundreds more that might occur.
...That being said.
Lin Guang was actually right.
If the standard to determine whether someone is a program is "one’s personal judgment of being a program," then he had already seen himself as a "program." Calling him a program for a Perfect Pass was accurate.
...This thought was somewhat sad.
But he didn’t even have the space to feel sad for himself.
"Forget it," Su Ming’an said, "I’d rather be a program."
He wouldn’t be tired, wouldn’t despair, wouldn’t go mad, would always remain in optimal condition; perhaps he would be much more relaxed than now.
Su Ming’an had pondered much about why he insisted on a perfect pass. Perhaps it was due to his family environment, perhaps it was that sense of responsibility when he was chosen, or perhaps it was because he couldn’t bear the thought of humanity losing and dying over and over. He ultimately chose this thorny path.
But the reason he had endured these four months was now more of a single pure emotion.
Obsession.
—You must save humanity, at any cost.
—The global situation is becoming increasingly perilous; you are the one with the greatest potential.
—Lin Jiang, Iris, Mo Wen, Luna, Lv Shu, Lu, Noel, Yamada Machiichi, Yuanyuan... so many people have placed their responsibilities on you; a billion people around the world are watching you.
—Edward, Mizushima Kawa Sora, Andre, Bonnie... so many harboring ill intentions are waiting specifically for your failure.
—Plus, there are so many beautiful things in this world; you can’t just abandon them.
He had no way out.
Pushed forcefully to the edge of a cliff, a single misstep would mean a plunge into an abyss.
"—Lewis, don’t be sad,"
The voice of Lin Guang suddenly came: "Violet once read me a poem, and I thought it described you very well. So, I learned the script of Dragon Country and wrote it on a net. I’ll give it to you..."
Su Ming’an quickly gathered his thoughts.
Through the blizzard more than two meters away, he saw the red lights of the nuclear control console blinking, the countdown steadily decreasing.
"Since you desire to help humanity, then stop the nuclear explosion," Su Ming’an said, uninterested in what Lin Guang had written.
Lin Guang shouldn’t have any reason to initiate a nuclear explosion.
With their entrance as players, this simulation was very successful. Su Ming’an had collected a large amount of "Source," which could help the Dawn System replenish its database.
Moreover, even if Lin Guang triggered a nuclear explosion, this simulation would still continue for over twenty more years until the catastrophe of the 72nd year would reset back to the 2nd year, it wouldn’t reset the world because of a single nuclear explosion.
Besides killing the vast majority of people, this nuclear explosion would be meaningless.
"I won’t," Lin Guang refused.
Su Ming’an frowned deeply.
He believed that Lin Guang definitely had something to hide; otherwise, it was unexplainable why Lin Guang possessed so much information. Moreover, Lin Guang claimed he "wasn’t a program," so what exactly was his role in this two-dimensional world?
"It’s almost time," Lin Guang looked up, "The countdown for the nuclear explosion is almost over."
He spoke these truths only to hold Su Ming’an back.
He looked towards the snowy sky; the scenery was beautiful.
It was now close to dawn, and the fireworks in the distance were becoming brighter. When a small, inconspicuous fireseed burst in mid-air, what followed was the dazzling light and thunderous boom, like several golden umbrellas spinning in the sky.
Dancing, merging, dispersing, bursting... The golden trails of the fireworks were like fluttering butterflies, gradually fading in the night sky.
The halo pierced through the blizzard, illuminated the crimson edge of the control console, reflecting on the countdown digits, flowing like blood.
His black robe billowed high, almost stained as white as the snow.
"Tick tock," "tick tock."
[Countdown: 31 seconds].
There were only thirty-one seconds left until this land was reduced to ruins.
Currently, Su Ming’an’s physical condition was not sufficient for combat. He just stood there, as if he no longer intended to stop the nuclear explosion.
"Lewis, I want to tell you something," Lin Guang’s eyes lit up as he realized that Lewis finally did not intend to stop him, and he sped up his speech, "Although at first, it was your black hair and gray eyes that drew me in, I gradually discovered that what attracted me was you as a person. You are different from others, you have perseverance, resolution, decisiveness, and you have your own world; you are a good person, and I like good people."
His eyes were extremely bright:
"I apologize for the harm I caused you before... so, after those people are gone, I will not hurt you again..."
Lin Guang’s speech abruptly stopped.
A sword blade pierced his severely injured body from back to front.
The scarlet light shone upon the blade, mingling with the blood seeping from the dampened black robe, trickling down.
Cloning Ming stepped out from the shadows, the Sword of Yarman in his hand flickering with a cold light. His body was covered in frost, the alert system taken over by AI Yeah did not expose his entry into the city.
Lin Guang was never one to waste words, he spoke to gain time to keep Su Ming’an occupied.
And so did Su Ming’an.
Earlier, at nine o’clock, Su Ming’an had remotely called Ming, who was gathering clues outside, to prepare for the final battle—right up to this moment for closure. At the last moment, Ming made it in time.
Lin Guang promised he would not harm him in the future... how could that be possible. From the beginning to the end, the person who harmed Su Ming’an the most was Lin Guang himself.
"Beep beep," "beep beep," the halo of the aviation obstruction light streamed in a flickering pattern.
Lin Guang took a step forward, his left foot "pu" soundly pierced into the thick blanket of snow, his complexion as pale as paper.
He stared blankly at the sword blade protruding from his own chest.
Su Ming’an immediately reached out, a red light flashed, and his wristwatch interface aligned with the authentication interface, and the image of AI Yeah instantly stood up. The countdown on the panel stopped at [03 seconds].
He opened the operational interface, stopped the nuclear explosion, and complex data flashed across the panel, it was a prolonged process.
Ming drew out his sword, and Lin Guang collapsed, coughing up blood.
"Original, I don’t think he is Lv Shu," Ming said.
Whether it was Lin Guang’s appearance or his Beast Control ability, both were too suspicious. Lin Guang’s word alone could not prove he was not Lv Shu.
"Alright."
Su Ming’an cut him off, focusing on the operational interface, "It’s no longer important."
What defines a person is his character and experiences, not a name.
"But I didn’t want you guys to end up this way, your meeting even predates my birth. You need a psychological anchor, and if you kill him with your own hands, then you..." Ming tried to say more.
"He is Lin Guang," Su Ming’an looked up at Ming, "Lv Shu probably hasn’t entered the tower, or he’s hidden somewhere."
Ming lowered his eyelids.
He gripped the sword tightly; the blood on the ground had already spread to his heels.
Su Ming’an lowered his head, continuing to operate the control interface, until he heard noise from the other side of the building. He looked up and saw Tretiya, punctured by countless scarlet hoses like an insect caught in a spiderweb, the hoses piercing her limbs and lifting her high, her beige hair fluttering in the wind and snow.
Lin Guang lay on the snow, shaky as he propped himself up. Ming’s strike spared his life, to extract remaining secrets.
Half of his body still covered in charred, curled flesh, a sword wound in his chest bled almost enough to dye his whole body red. He was beginning to lose sensation, a precursor to death.
Ming’s sword had completely shattered all his illusions... Lewis never wanted to speak with him from the start. He had been talking to himself like a clown, only to be stabbed with a sword.
He stepped back through the heavy snow, leaving a trail of blood.
As he retreated, the hoses lowered Tretiya, slowly withdrawing from her body. With each step Lin Guang took backward, the hoses left a part of her.
—Lin Guang was conducting a hostage exchange.
If they wanted Tretiya alive, they had to let Lin Guang go.
Su Ming’an silently watched the scene unfold as the control console under AI Yeah’s control was seizing authority over the City of Gods.
[Progress of seizure: 65%, Faction Contribution Points: 18,000 points.]
[Progress of seizure: 66%, Faction Contribution Points: 18,100 points.]
[...]
"Beep beep," "beep beep."
The bright red numbers kept jumping.
"Teacher, we can’t let him leave, we can’t sacrifice more people," Tretiya endured the pain, her body full of pierced wounds, "Don’t worry about me..."
And Lin Guang was staring fixedly at Su Ming’an, with eyes full of resentment as if he were betrayed. To think, he ended up needing this kind of hostage exchange tactic to find a way out.
Lewis couldn’t possibly disregard Tretiya’s life, once he safely left the City of Gods, he had to...
"Pu," suddenly, a soft sound.
A scarlet scale descended from the sky, landing precisely on Lin Guang’s head. This was the Judgment Skill.
"Kill him," Su Ming’an said.
There was no more room to hold back now, Lin Guang was unlikely to divulge those secrets.
Cloning Ming’s figure flashed past, his sword blade pointing forward, thrusting towards Lin Guang’s chest!
Lin Guang and Tretiya never expected, Su Ming’an would actually make a move.
In an instant, the hoses penetrated, stabbing fiercely into Tretiya’s body, almost turning her delicate form into a hedgehog, blood massively spurted out.
At the same time, Ming’s sword blade pierced through Lin Guang’s chest, nearly hanging him on the edge of the rooftop.
Both parties came to a halt.
As if the ice and snow had frozen time itself, everyone stopped at that moment.
