Chapter 223: A Message In Winter Night
The night deepens.
The outside of the tent are cold.
Winter snow is falling.
The clouds seems colder, the skies seems darker.
Sometimes, the howling and roaring of some beast could be heard, their voice flows to the area brought by the wind.
In the Brolgadhr settlement, there is three four large tent that is more like a house. It is close toward the forest that separate the Wall of Yan and the Great Steppe.
Before the Brolgadhr tribe would position their settlements a bit farther away from the forest. But when Aeryon conquer most of the western part of the lower south, Aeryon decided to settle the tribe near the forest
This is probably because the area here is warmer, the land is a bit more fertile compared to the higher part, there is a bit of the river water flowing here that could be used to farm some simple crop and also because it is a reminder to the warriors
That their enemies is close. So that they would always be vigilant
This is the thought of Ayera. Ayera is inside her tent. One of the four big tents in the settlement of the Brolgadhr.
One of the four big tent is Aeryon personal tent. This is where he spends his time reviewing things, summoning his men, inviting great warriors to join him
It is a place where he is usually at. The other one is the Chief tent. This is where he does his governance.
Then there is the tent, where it is constructed for them, the newlywed. It is where Aeryon and Ayera should live
And the other one is Ayera tent, surrounded by her subordinates.
The circumstances and the situation of the marriage between Aeryon and Ayera is quite complicated.
They married each other because of interest between their tribe. It is so for Aeryon and it is so for Ayera.
Even though they have been married for quite some time, they never did the deed yet.
Of course, if Aeryon is lustful, he would probably find some other woman to release his pent-up lust but from the moment Aeryon returns to the great Steppe he did not touch any woman.
Not when he is conquering other tribes and not even when he raided the Yan city.
It is said that the Yan women are delicate and timid like a mouse and many Steppe men paly around with those women especially if they raided the Yan people village.
In a way what goes around comes around. In the past, the Yan kills and massacre a lot of the Steppe people.
They also did the same thing and even worse thing that that.
It is not justification but it is justification for Ayera and for many common people of the Great Steppe
it could be said Ayera is even more extreme than her husband.
But to the people of this world, her thoughts is not that extreme instead it could even be considered mild
Look at Dama. He is an expert in creating fear.
When he is in Nurshira, the sheer terror that he had inflicted upon them, the torture that he inflicted upon the people of Yan would not be quickly forgotten
Dama has his own brand.
And he has his own method of governing which is very different from Ayera father, Utgard and from Ayera husband, Aeryon
Ayera also knows about what happens during the battle in Nurshira. The news that his husband is the first to break the city gains the admiration of many warriors clans and the other tribes that have surrendered to Brolgadhr
And now all of those disgruntled tribes are behaving themselves.
They have tested what they should have tested. Testing the chief of the Brolgadhr repeatedly might not be a wise idea.
Ayera has her own thoughts about what her husband should do and if she talks about this with Aeryon she would know that their intention and opinion would differ greatly in certain matters
She is the native of this world and she has been surviving in this world. Aeryon on the other hand comes from a very different world.
But of course, this is something that Ayera doesn’t know
What she knows is that her husband never touched any women and he also did not allow the men under him to rape or kill woman and child.
To the best of his abilities.
Child in the context of this era is not fourteen or thirteen years old.
It is younger than that like babe who is in a cradle. Because in this era, even fourteen years old is fighting.
Children mature quickly in this era of hardship
It is the same for the people of Yan and the people of the Steppe
Of course, some people are dissatisfied with this practice of Aeryon, for they believe that they should be given their war booty and the practice of doing whatever they want when they defeated their enemies is ingrained in them
But those who dare disobey is quartered by four horses, get a thousand cut punishment, buried under a ground leaving only their heads to breathe, to be crushed and so many other creative methods of punishment
Aeryon rules his warriors with harsh laws.
The more unruly, the harsher the law.
Hence, the discipline of his men even rivals that of the western tribes.
Ayera had seen this before. If Aeryon orders his men to jump into a river of fire, they would not hesitate to jump.
This kind of discipline to the point of death is something terrifying.
Ayera did not know that during the raid of Nurshira those chief also saw the same thing and come to the same conclusion.
Aeryon army is disciplined and nothing is more terrifying to them than that kind of army facing them as enemies
As long as the commander of such army remain calm in crisis, you could win many wars simply just by having discipline
Why?
Because in this era, to train a disciplined army is enough for you to be called a capable commander.
In wars, especially in wars of this era, once there is a bit of disadvantages or a crisis during a battle, an army without discipline would dissolve and disperse and it is during this retreating phase that many soldiers are killed
But if a disciplined army met a capable commander, then even if the army was destroyed in one wing as long as they remain steadfast, that steadfastness alone is enough to unnerve the enemies
Because the enemies could not know the state of the battle. They only know that the enemy in front of them keep moving froward or keep defending.
Regardless of what you do to them, this disciplined army keep fighting and shows no sign of stopping
That kind of tenacity would be a big deterrence.
And so, they might even think hat they are losing.
Even if they are winning but seeing nothing changes in the battlefield, the army with low morale, low discipline would fall into the misunderstanding that they were the ones being beaten
Bravery sometime is enough to tide the battle.
It is why so many personal duels between champion of each tribe would start the war.
The victory of the champion could embolden the army and the loss of a champion could depress the heart of the army
Because the rise of bravery on one side means the decline of bravery on the other side. Morale is tied to bravery.
And low morale, means low chance of winning and vice versa
Ayera admire him. But admiring him doesn’t mean she has to love him.
Ayera sighed as she rub her forehead.
She is in her tent.
And she already went to sleep before.
But tonight, as the night become deeper, as the wind become colder, there was someone that come to her tent
This person did not come here for long, he came and he left a message.
And it is because of that message she is awake now, sitting cross legged in front of the low table , rubbing her forehead and sighing
The message was simple
Wustkazan or Nergui. It did not take her than a few second to understand what the message means.
And she di not have to detain that person to know who sends her this message. This kind of message, this kind of method, it would only be her father
"he wanted to know where Aeryon would expand’
Wustkazan or Nergui.
Right now, it might seem like Aeryon is resting and recuperating. It might even take longer than before for him to start the war engine.
Some even pray that Aeryon is satisfied with the victories that he now have.
But Ayera knows better
Even though they did not share the same bed, and even though they talk scarcely with each other, Ayera knows Aeryon.
She could see through him through his action.
Strengthening the warriors, reforming the tribe laws, and many others innovation.
Ayera might not be as smart as Mayeux, strong as Belarion and Aeryon but she also knows the method of the rulers and the rules of power.
Her father did not teach her but she learnt it in Naraka Griha.
The method of the rulers, or commonly known in the Naraka Griha as the Method of Raja is taught so that the assassins could use it to their advantage.
The methods of rulers could be manipulated if you know what it is. Knowing things makes you powerful.
And not knowing things makes you weak.
Information is power if you know how to use it
