Way of Overlord
Chapter 199: Barbaric Era

Chapter 199: Barbaric Era

Seated upon an intricately carved chair in the grand main hall of the city lord’s residence, Aeryon exuded a composed demeanour amidst the opulent surroundings.

The hall, adorned with lavish embellishments and ornate furnishings, provided an air of serene magnificence that contrasted starkly with the bustling chaos unfolding beyond the residence’s walls.

Aeryon awaited reports from his forces deployed across various sectors of the city

Nurshira is a large city in the north. It is a pity that it is neglected year after year and that even though such a large city was once the focus of the Yan empire, as the Great Steppe was divided, they chose to prioritize the Central Plains.

The city is then becoming a simple trade city and its military was neutered

It boasted an impressive infrastructure characterized by its expansive layout and four imposing gates that marked entry points to distinct quarters.

Its magnitude extended to accommodate approximately two hundred and fifty thousand people, a population size deemed sizable and influential in the historical context of this era.

It is clear whoever build this city in the past had intended it to become a focus point. Not only as a city that is for trade but also for military expansion.

It is said in the past, there is many soldiers stationed on the walls and the soldiers stationed here are elites.

How it had changed after decades.

The city’s expansive nature sprawled across the landscape, with each gate granting access to a distinct section of the urban expanse.

These divisions delineated various neighbourhoods

From bustling market districts to tranquil residential areas, Nurshira encapsulated a microcosm of society within its walls.

The city pulsated with the vibrant energy of daily life—street vendors peddling goods, craftsmen honing their trades, and citizens traversing the labyrinthine streets in pursuit of their livelihoods.

At least that is how it used to be. But even before Aeryon conquered this city, the trades is not as vibrant and it is not as prosperous as the past.

Aeryon is drinking Ayrag and talking with his men and every few hours, the battlefield report would be sent to him.

Aeryon did not send his army to meddle too much on the other area of the city. Because if he did that, the other chief might not be that appreciative toward his intention

It is fine if he helped them during a time of distress, but if he meddle now when the tides are on the side of these chief, then Aeryon might be accused of trying to steal their achievements

They all agree that whoever takes the gate, would decide the fate of that area where they hold power in the city.

Aeryon took the north and so every part of the north area of the city is under his control.

Of course, it is not like there is an invisible border that determines this so Aeryon and his men planted their banner to determine the area where he holds power.

And any forces that sees this banner would respect it and would not interfere in what happens inside the area of that banner.

Since they accorded this respect to him, he should do the same for them. Unless the battle is too severe, Aeryon did not need to send his warriors to help.

In simple words, they did not want to owe him because if they owe him, the talk about dividing the war booty after the battle would be very complicated and could even lead to a breaking off relations.

Aeryon knows this and so he did not meddle that much and only sent a partial group to help if there is any signs of resistance from the defenders of the city

As for the battle report, he sent his scout to pay attention to the other side of the city.

Aeryon did not want to be caught unaware if there is a resistance that could undo the victory that they already have.

And every hour the news arrive in front of him.

The news of victory is overwhelming.

From Sordkazan taking the city to the Khagai tribe easily defeating the defenders to the killings by Dama and his Esbizuk tribe, the city is all but won

Aeryon in the city lord residence is now sitting on the main hall and waited for the news of full and total compete victory. At the same time, he sent his men to scout the roads between Nurshira and the other city of the north

Aeryon fears that the other city lord would send an army

If they did Aeryon wanted to be prepared

"I did not intend to be here for long" he thought to himself

And he is preparing to leave.

While he is at the city lord residence, he also heard the news that in Dama battle, the defender made a last stand

The defenders of the southern gate retreat to the city making their last stand there.

They fought ferociously but Dama warriors are brutal, merciless and trained by the mountain men attack.

Their strength are not normal.

And so, all of the defenders was slaughtered. And all of the men and women and child around the area where Dama attacked was slaughtered.

The defiance made Dama even more angry. And everyone in the southern area of the city had to pay for it.

Aeryon knows this world is not the same as his world. This is still a barbaric era. And international law is not a thing.

Many civilizations still think that they are the center of the world. That is the belief of the Yan and the belief of Roma and even Yindu

Yan thinks of the Great Steppe as barbarian tribes and even though they know of Roma, they simply think of Roma as a large state. It did not cross their minds that Roma is a great empire that controls a lot of states and nations.

Yindu is blocked on all four of its sides with mountains and even though they met the people of the Great Steppe and Yan, they did not think much of them.

For the Great Steppe, they think of the Great Steppe people as nomadic people and because of the favourable relations between the people of the Great Steppe and the Yindu people, they simply thought of the Great Steppe as nomadic civilization and did not pose a threat to them

As for Yan, even though they met each other, Yindu simply thinks of Yan as a large empire but it is still nothing in their eyes because the mountains protected them

Yan also thought the same.

This is an era of chaos, of killing, of a world where you could conquer the whole world in horseback

In this kind of era, if you are not strong, if you are not smart and wise, you would be trampled by the tides of time

And the world would not be merciful

Aeryon could only sigh at this.

Aeryon did not have the authority to tell Dama to stop since Dama is also a chief and he has his own army.

Aeryon would not stop him and jeopardize the relationship between them breaking out before he wanted to

Aeryon has another problem to think about right now

By now, Belarion, Mayeux and Durka has all returned to him and the army is ordered to stand by

After helping the army to break down any attempt of rebelling and make sure that the area of this city is pacified, they returns and help with the processing of the bounty

There is many things to calculate from the food, to the horses to the riches from jewellery to iron and to people

The jewellery and riches , he did not mind giving it to the soldiers, What he pays attention the most is the people

Population. Manpower. prosperous economy. Expansion of the army.

All of this needs people. That is why, to him, all the other things is inconsequential. People. That is what he wants and what he needs.

To him, the wealth in jewellery and riches pales in significance compared to the value of a thriving and supported citizenry.

And of course, with a large army, and many talents, only then could he compete with the other tribes of the Great Steppe

Even though he had managed to defeat a Yan city this time, he knows that this is only because they were unprepared, and this is not a city that is focused by the Empire.

The Great Steppe did not yet have the power to truly went head-to-head with the Yan empire. Aeryon plans was never to take the Yan empire and compete with the Princes.

His eyes and his heart has always been toward the direction of the Great Steppe. When he manages to take all the Great Steppe, unify all the tribes under one banner, then.... A Great Hunt would commence all over the world

"One step has been taken. Now, I need to realize my other plans" he mutters to himself.

Right now, Aeryon had to decide the fate of the concubines and the woman inside the city lord residence

The city lord flees leaving all of his concubines and servants

Aeryon decided to bring them all to the Great Steppe. He did not think to marry them because that would complicate things.

And he himself is not a lustful person. Some of them look beautiful but which beauty in the world that Aeryon did not see before

After all, before he came to this world, he lived in a world where every day, every beautiful person would flaunt their beauty in social media

In this world, beauties are rare and that is why a beauty could launch a thousand shop and bring down empires

Because a beauty could muddle the mind. Aeryon had seen so many beauties, it was like he is immune to it

From what he sees, the concubines are not high-ranking ladies and he could marry them with the people of the Great Steppe.

That is his wish.

Of course, this is naïve thinking of his. He could not help but feel that these people would rather die than marry a people of the Steppe.

But Aeryon would play it by the ear.
