Way of Overlord -
Chapter 189: Sincerity
Chapter 189: Sincerity
And only Aeryon knows why Belarion went red eyed and went into a berserk state. The warriors of the Steppe cares about Belarion like a brother, to the older one, like a father to the younger ones.
This is a feeling of affection, of sincerity.
Mayeux and Aeryon could not achieve this. It is not because they are inferior to Belarion but because of their position.
Aeryon is the Chief and as the chief there is a feeling of awe when the warriors of the tribe pledge tehri allegiance to him
When they fight for the Chief, they fight for the tribe, they fight for duty. It is their responsibility to fight for the chief.
So, the feeling of treating Aeryon like a brother, like a father would not arise.
Mayeux on the other hand is of Roma origin. And even though he is not discriminated, Mayeux himself is not that close with many people of the tribe.
He is educated and he read books, speaks poems, devise strategy, having the demeanour like those literati of Yan.
This make him even more distant from the people of the tribe who is mostly simple people.
Mayeux uses the military law like a tool and he dispense rewards and punishment fairly.
So, in the minds of the warriors, Mayeux is a strict leader, whose word are is as scarce as gold and as heavy as the mountain.
But Belarion.... Belarion is different. This is a child that grows up among them, who plays around in the streams with them, who hunts condors and eagles and rides with them along the long tall grass of the Steppe.
Those who is older than Belarion thought of him as a younger brother. And what would older brother do when they see their younger brother being attacked? They would fight for them.
As for the young ones, they see the prowess of Belarion, idolizes him as the perfect ideal state of a warrior.
Strong and all-victorious, that is the perception of the young ones of Belarion. he is an idol ion their hearts.
And so, they treated Belarion like their older brother, and for war orphans, Belarion felt like a father who dispense harsh advice but cry for their pain.
These are the sincerity offered by Belarion men.
And Belarion reciprocate this feeling. Those who treated him like a brother, he treated them like a brother.
Those who treated him like a father, he treated them like they are his sons.
They are like a family. And family is something that many of the Marynku always pays attention to.
The way they express might not be as clear as the Roma, or like the Yan which enforced it in the stud of filial piety, but the people of Marynku would die for their brother
This is what those Yan people could not understand. Because in their minds, there is only loss and profit. Once the Yan people attack a tribe. The tribe had no way of fighting the Yan who was armed to the teeth
But the tribe keep on fighting. And they die by the droves. The general asks why would you not surrender. You would lose your land; you would lose your freedom but you would be alive.
And the chief simply replies
Living like a beast in a cage, death is more preferable.
And so, the general asks
"We will keep killing your people if you do not surrender. Do you not feel pity for your people"?
The chief answer
"The choice has always been in your hands. If you did not kill, how could my sons, my brothers, my sisters die. You kill them and you spoke like the fault is mine. What insidious cunning creature, the Yan people are" he said.
From beginning to end, that chief never give up and even when he is to face death, he fears no one, and he is not ashamed to meet the Skyfather
All of the people of his tribe were killed.
But their deeds were not forgotten. The Southern Great Steppe at that time, because of the deed of this chief and his tribesmen united for a moment the tribes all over the Southern Great Steppe.
Anger fills the heart of every tribesman after knowing what happened to the chief.
Hundreds of tribes of the Southern Great Steppe, big or small banded together and killed so many Yan soldiers that day, that even till today, there is still skulls that could be found in that battlefield.
The blood colours the Empatarah river clear water red for a month.
All the Pencerita tells this story. It is a story of war, of battle, of heroic deeds, of inspiring actions but ultimately it is a love story.
Of family. Of lovers. Of brothers and sisters. Of fathers and mothers.
The Yan killed them.
And so, the Great Steppe killed them back.
The story of the world is like this.
It has always been like this. It is a story of love and of hatred. It is the same story, only different characters and different setting
But the story.... has always been the same.
And for that story of that chief, he fought to the death and his tribe fought to the death not because they thought they could win
They fight because of family. Their family is killed. And they would kill everyone that kills them and follows them to meet the Earthmother.
Family...this means something in the Great Steppe.
And so, how could Belarion not get crazy when he sees his brothers and his sons getting killed?
How could he not go crazy when he sees his family being slaughtered. One might argue, you are the one that is attacking the city. You are the invader.
But Belarion has always been simple. Battle is something that is normal for the people of the great Steppe.
And right and wrong has always been determined by where you are standing. And this kind of right and wrong is the kind of right and wrong that Belarion understood. To him, the circumstances of the death of his men is not important.
What is important is that they died.
They died....and that is what important to him. And so, as honour dictates, he shall avenge them.
This is not the first time Belarion saw his tribespeople died. But those time and this time is different.
Because before, he did not have personal connection with these people. But after training them, drinking with them, hunting and joking and raiding with them.... bonds are formed.
And when bonds are form, entanglements forms. And entanglement of this kind means emotion.
And there lies the trouble.
His men who he height as family died. And even if he knew that being calm and being collected would still win him the battle, how is it easy for him to control his emotion.
All around him, he dominates the defenders and wherever he stood and wave his glaive, space opened, heads rolls and soldiers falls down
But his men are not him.
One slash of their sword does not bring great gust of wind that travels forward. They still have to fight and they die.
One death might not shake Belarion. But one died and then the second died and then the third
Then when skirmishes happen, around Belarion, there is only corpses of the enemy. But around his men there is only the sound of the death throes of his men.
Dozens dies, and then hundreds of them.
The chaotic it is the harder it is to organize a proper attack.
Belarion shouted orders but even with his loud voice his men could not hear him among the chaos of the battlefield.
No matter how loud his roar was, how could it compete with the sound of metal clashing against each other
And as he moves forward, he saw many more of his men died. And he just blows up.
Anger rose, and wrath filled his mind and his heart and he went berserk, unleashing devastation all over the battlefield.
He will take revenge.
"ROAR!" he is still angry but with renewed ferocity, he led his men to the side, his glaive slashing left and right.
On top of his horse, an invincible warrior image is forever etched in the minds of the warriors of the Brolgadhr tribe.
All over the city, the city gates have been breached.
And it shocked every defender. Whether it be in the northern gates, or the western gates, all of them was not expecting that it only took them a day to break the city
Years of neglect toward these cities make the walls in disrepair, the unconventional attack of the Steppe warriors also contributed heavily to the destruction of the city gates. But if there is one thing that seal the fate of this city, it was the incompetence of the city lord to gather the people heart and unite them to fight against the invaders.
And that mistake now cause the Empire this city
