Chapter 169: Hell On Earth
Chapter 169: Hell On Earth
The massive battering ram swung forward with tremendous force, its iron-clad head slamming into the sturdy gates of Nurshira.
The resounding boom echoed through the battlefield, causing the defenders on the wall to look down in alarm.
The relentless assault on the gate had begun, and Aeryon warriors is determined to break through.
As the battering ram struck the gate repeatedly, the defenders scrambled to reinforce the weakened sections.
Thunderous blow echoes, the city gate cracked!
"Advance!"
Aeryon shouted. The siege tower is also advancing wooden planks and animal hides rolled onto the mound to protect it, archers on the siege tower exchange fire with city defenders atop the wall
Below, Aeryon warrior keep advancing, Aeryon taking his breath to gather his strength and calm his mind
Belarion, the strongest person in Aeryon tribe is now displaying his raw power as he scaled the city wall with an almost effortless ease.
His hands struck the stone surface, creating makeshift handholds that allowed him to steadily ascend the formidable defense.
Stone chips and debris flew as he punched into the wall, each blow echoing with thunderous force.
His fist attack is like a force of nature.
Mayeux on the other hand, stood a short distance away from wall and looking at the battle.
His sharp eyes scanned the battlefield, assessing the ongoing battle.
With a confident and commanding presence, he orchestrated his men like a conductor leading an orchestra.
His make sure that his warriors actions is coordinated
Durka, the chief of the Duhai tribe, showcased his commitment to the battle in a different manner.
While he wasn’t directly engaging in the climbing or breaching of the city walls, he entrusted his sons with critical task.
Mounted on swift horses, they unleashed volleys of arrows with remarkable precision and skill.
One of Durka’s sons, in particular, caught Aeryon attention.
His mastery of archery was nothing short of extraordinary.
Every arrow he loosed found its mark, with unerring accuracy.
It was as if he possessed the divine blessings of an archery deity, guiding each arrow to its destined target.
Durka sons continued to rain down arrows upon the defenders, adding to the chaos and pressure faced by those atop the city walls.
The battle raged on, and the tide is clearly turning in Aeryon favor.
His warriors used every means at their disposal to breach the city defense.
Ladders is propped against the walls, grappling hooks and ropes were thrown, allowing determined Steppe warriors to climb the towering fortifications.
Siege towers rolled forward, carrying soldiers who leaped onto the walls to confront the city’s defenders.
The clash of steel against steel filled the air, as intense close-quarters combat erupted along the city ramparts.
Warriors from the Great Steppe fought with unyielding determination, their eyes fixed on the prize of capturing Nurshira.
The defenders, outnumbered and now outmatched, fought valiantly to hold their ground, but the relentless assault was taking its toll.
Aeryon forces is now gradually wearing down defense of the city. Victory seemed within reach, but the battle was far from over.
"The walls is breached. Now, the gate"
Aeryon had momentarily retreated with his warriors, regrouping and waiting for the opportune moment to strike once more.
The thunderous assault on the city gate continued, each battering ram strike causing the massive gates to crack further.
From a distance, Aeryon could discern the tell-tale signs of impending collapse – holes in the once-imposing gate.
The defenders of Nurshira, despite their tenacity, is now faced with the inevitable.
He smiles
BOOM!
Crack!
"It’s now" he thought
"The city gate is breached! Forward!"
Clang!
Tting!
The clash of steel on steel, the hissing of arrows, and the roar of battle filled the air as they poured through the opening.
The defenders, now with their backs against the wall, fought valiantly to protect their city.
"Hyargh!"
Aeryon kick the side of his horse as his horse rush forward toward the city gate.
"Kill them!"
Aeryon warriors surge through the opening, engaging in fierce combat with defenders inside the city.
On top of the walls, the Nurshira defender is being overwhelmed, and many of the strategics point on top of the wall is already being captured by Aeryon forces.
"We are the first to breach!" Aeryon shouted.
When Aeryon retreated to the rear, he also send his scout to check the other chief on the other direction of the city gate.
And from what he saw, they are still struggling to break through the gate. So, Aeryon is confident that their forces are the first one to break through the gates.
Shouting such words, the morale of his warriors skyrocket and the morale of the enemies plummeted.
Aeryon horse sped through the people and jump through the gaping hole that is made on the city gate
Entering the city, Aeryon laughed, his laugh echoes loudly.
"Capture the city lord, kill the Yan soldiers, avenge our ancestors! Let them know the wrath of the Great Steppe!"
"HOUH!" the shouts of the grassland warriors echoes loudly inside the city, like a thunder that breaks open the sky.
The defenders of Nurshira is in a state of chaos and desperation.
Aeryon warriors pressed forward relentlessly, clashing with armed patrols and city guards in the narrow streets.
Every corner of the city became a battlefield, and the city’s resources were stretched thin as every available soldier was called upon to defend it.
Despite the fierce resistance, the defenders is disoriented and lacked a unified command.
With the city gates breached and their leader, Qiao Meng, in hiding, their morale continued to plummet.
Panic set in as they realized the dire straits they were in.
Aeryon forces moved strategically, securing key points in the city one by one.
Their discipline and determination contrasted sharply with the disarray of the defenders. It was only a matter of time before Nurshira would fall into Aeryon hands.
"The barbarians breach the city! Expel the barbarians!"
Some of the city’s captains desperately tried to rally the frightened populace, attempting to boost their morale.
However, such act is like an uphill battle.
The divide between the citizens and the military had festered for far too long.
The people’s distrust of the soldiers ran deep, and it was reciprocated by the troops who had grown indifferent to the plight of the city’s inhabitants.
Xu Bai’s words echoed in the minds of those who understood the city’s predicament.
Nurshira survival hinged on the support and cooperation of its people.
But the citizens had little affection for the soldiers, let alone any confidence in their ability to defend the city.
This lack of trust had created a vicious cycle: the people didn’t trust the troops, and the troops, in turn, felt no responsibility towards the people.
And now that divide is threatening to consume the city from within. Internal and external full of problem, so how could this city not fall when it is poked a little bit harder?
Qiao Meng stubbornness and refusal to heed wise advice had dire consequences for the city.
If he had chosen to break the cycle by gaining popular support, the breach of the city’s defense, though still a grave situation, might not have led to such a catastrophic loss of morale.
His inflexibility and preference for sycophantic counsel rather than wise guidance had proven to be costly mistakes, ones that the city would now pay for dearly.
The price of his hubris and short-sightedness was a city on the brink of chaos, with its fate hanging in the balance.
Aeryon forces breach of the northern city gate shattered whatever little confidence the city people had left in their own troops.
The already fragile belief in the army ability to protect them crumbled completely in the face of this breach. It is a severe blow to the city’s morale and security.
Which makes the city even harder to defend and as such make it seem like the barbarians are invincible army
Even the people under Aeryon was shocked how easy it is to kill the Yan people. With each kill, confidence is infused in them and the myths of invincibility propagated by the Yan dynasty erode and break completely in the hearts of the grassland people.
Xu Bai had said during the meeting of the military official that day, before the siege happen
"The army need the support and admiration of the people to bolster their determination. Currently, the troops are seen by the citizens as little more than bandits and oppressors. If we don’t address this issue, we risk losing the support of the people."
And now, even as the captain of the city shouted and try to rally support, the common people did not pick up their hoes and pike to help the army
Instead, they all try to find a way to escape the city
Losing the people, losing the city.
"Let me ask you, sir, if our defenders are fighting against the barbarians, and even the common people don’t support or think highly of them, then for whom will the soldiers fight? Will they still have the mentality to shed their blood? ?
In other words, if the people in the city support our officers and soldiers one after another, worship them like heroes, and trust them, then I believe that the officers and soldiers will also have the determination and belief to fight to the end! And now, the frontier troops are facing the common people in the county
In their eyes, we are almost like bandits and bullies. Sir, if we continue to fail to govern, then the people will regard us as ’barbarians’ within the city gates. In this way, the people’s support will be completely lost"
General Xi Yan who is fighting with the barbarians could not help but to remember Xu Bai advice as he is cutting through barbarians warriors
"Xulang words are the words of sages. It is a pity we do not have wise lord!" he thought
He cut a few more barbarians and then mounted his horse and goes to the carriage of Qiao Meng to protect him out of the city.
The chaos in the city continued to escalate. One gate had already fallen to the barbarian invaders, and three more gates remained under siege. If those three gates were to fall as well, the city would be overrun by the barbarian warriors, and Xu Bai’s prophetic words of "The barbarians would tear that gate, and there will be hell on earth" would tragically become a reality.
