Way of Overlord -
Chapter 159: The Boy
Chapter 159: The Boy
The morning came and the winter wind blows. But the winters in Nurshira is not as biting as the winter wind in the Great Steppe.
The chirps of birds, the sound of nature that is very different from the sound of the swaying grass and the cries of falcons and eagle in the Great Steppe.
Aeryon did not yet send any of his men to attack the city but Belarion is raring to go. At the break of dawn, Aeryon summons Belarion to his tent and order him to stay beside him
Today, would be the day for the four chiefs to meet with each other. And when they meet each other, they would discuss on how coordinate their attack with each other.
As the first rays of dawn painted the sky, an unexpected sight unfolded before their eyes.
The defenders of the city, driven by some inexplicable impulse, streamed forth from the imposing city gate.
Their hasty sortie was met with disapproving shakes of the head from Mayeux, who had risen early to witness this curious spectacle.
In Mayeux’s estimation, this was nothing short of a foolish move on the part of the city’s defenders.
The previous night, he had journeyed to Aeryon camp to lay out his insights and strategies. His assessment had been crystal clear: there appeared to be a conspicuous lack of strategic acumen within the city’s leadership.
As the defenders sallied forth that morning, it only served to underscore Mayeux’s point, highlighting the dearth of tactical insight among those who had ventured outside the city walls.
Right now, Mayeux is on horseback looking at those defenders coming out from the city.
He laughed
"You see," Mayeux muttered to those around him, "it’s a grave tactical error to send a contingent out of the city at this juncture."
He wanted one of them to hear. Mayeux met a kid when he was raiding a village. A child of the Great Steppe that was enslaved by the Yan people
This child knows how to fight and Mayeux took him under him. After seeing this kid in battle, Mayexu could tell that this kid is a person with talkent and now, he is cultivating the kid.
He gestured towards the city walls, emphasizing his point.
"Nurshira is a fortress, designed to withstand assaults from without. Inside those walls, they have the natural advantage. Defenders behind fortified positions are always tougher to dislodge than attackers."
Mayeux tone grew more animated as he continued, his hands gesturing to emphasize each point.
"By venturing out like this, they’re relinquishing that advantage. It’s as if they’re inviting us in, saying, ’Come, attack us on open ground where our defense count for nothing.’ It’s tactically unsound."
He paused for a moment, allowing the implications to sink in.
"Furthermore," he added, "it’s also a signal of their desperation. They must be running low on provisions or have some other pressing reason to risk a battle in the open. Desperation can lead to mistakes, but it can also make them unpredictable."
They are desperate.
This is something that Mayeux doesn’t know but just imply.
And he is sure he had reasoned it right
If the army of this city is more powerful than them, yes, maybe there is some kind of strategic reason why they were deployed.
But Mayeux and the others have met the soldiers of Yan in the northern region. Most of the town guards are weak.
And those that are strong could not defeat the cavalry of the Great Steppe because they never met such method of attack before.
Mayeux’s gaze remained fixed on the unfolding scene.
"We mustn’t underestimate them, even if their actions appear unwise. Sometimes, desperate foes can surprise you with their determination and ingenuity. You do not corner a rat so bad that they would rather fight the cat? Do you understand that?"
Mayeux said as he look at a boy beside him. His other warriors were stunned. They look at each other and they could only smile wryly.
"it seems our Commander of One Thousand really wanted to cultivate that boy" the captains of the warriors all thought that Mayeux was talking to them.
It turns out that their Commander is talking all of this so that the boy could understand.
By now, Aeryon had slowly modified the hierarchies of the army of his tribe. It is not yet like the profession army in the modern world but it is becoming organized.
Discipline is paramount and military order is heavy like a mountain.
The captains are the ones that are given command to one hundred men.
Under Mayeux, he have ten captains who commanded one hundred warriors each meaning Mayeux controls one thousand troops.
Of course, right now the troops that Mayeux current has, had already surpassed one thousand.
When Mayeux went raiding in the northern countryside, he release many of the Great Steppe people that were captured or enslaved by the Yan people
And then he recruited them . The blood of the Great Steppe, of the people of the grassland flows in them and bravery has always course through their veins.
And so, right now, even though Mayeux has been given the power of leading one thousand men, his troops is now around five thousand or more.
Mayeux observe the boy. The boy look at the city walls and his eyesight is sharp and there is hatred in that eyes.,
Mayeux sighed seeing it
Then he asked again
"Do you understand?"
The boy who is sitting on horseback beside Mayeux nodded.
"You have too much hate" The boy nodded but he did not explain and he did not offer any words.
Mayeux could understand why and so he could only sigh.
Mayeux also looks back at the walls of Nurshira.
Mayeux did not say everything to the boy. He hoped that the boy could figure it out for himself.
As a strategist there is many things to consider and so even though the act of bringing out such a small force out of the city seems stupid, as a strategist, you should always think more
because there is another thing he needed to consider.
Maybe, this is to lure him and the other tribes to attack the city or it might be a ploy to feign weakness so that the Great Steppe warriors would look down on them and make mistakes.
Of course, Mayeux doesn’t know that his worries are superfluous.
Because there is no such tactical and strategical plans at all from the Nurshira defenders.
When Xu Bai left the city, the fate of the city of Nurshira is sealed.
Qiao Meng simply felt desperate and wanting to try to test the mettle of the Steppe warriors.
Even though the generals and the military official all plead him not to send soldiers, he sent it anyway.
But Mayeux mindset is what made him stand out from the rest. Eve when he is confident in his winning, he knows to plan for the unexpected.
"Aeryon has given me the order to attack these soldiers. Let’s fight and quickly settled them" The boy grips his spear and nodded his eyes full of killing intent
"Go and execute my orders"
One captain rode their horses, a hundred men behind him the dust rises and the sound of war drums echoes loudly below the city gates
A few battles and then his caption retreated. The soldiers of Nurshira like a bee following honey follows.
Mayeux eyes shines and he came down from the forested hill.
As the defenders of Nurshira ventured further from the safety of their city walls, Mayeux couldn’t believe his luck.
Their excitement of thinking that they had won had led them straight into a trap, and he intended to exploit it to the fullest.
With a wicked grin, he spurred his horse forward, leading his hundred riders towards the ill-fated enemy.
The pounding of hooves against the frozen ground created an eerie symphony of impending doom.
The defenders, clearly not expecting such swift and ruthless retaliation, found themselves drawn deeper into the forested area, their steps hesitant and panicked.
Tall trees loomed overhead, their bare branches like skeletal fingers reaching for the heavens.
Mayeux’s cunning strategy became evident as he guided the enemy into the densest part of the forest.
The defenders, now disoriented and desperate, struggled to maintain their formation.
Their shouts and cries were swallowed by the thick woods, creating an atmosphere of tense anticipation.
Suddenly, the silence shattered like glass as Mayeux’s riders burst from the shadows of the trees.
Swords gleamed wickedly in the dim light, and battle cries filled the air. It was a terrifying, lightning-fast onslaught.
Desperation gripped the defenders as they realized the trap they had fallen into.
Panic set in, and chaos erupted.
Swords clashed, arrows found their marks, and the forest became a battleground.
Mayeux riders, well-trained and ruthless, moved with deadly precision.
They closed in on the disarrayed enemy, slashing through their ranks.
The defenders fought valiantly, but they were outnumbered and outmanoeuvred.
The woods bore witness to a brutal slaughter and massacre
The scent of death fills the air.
The air was thick with the acrid scent of sweat, fear, and spilled blood. Each clash of steel, each cry of pain, and each fallen defender added to the grim tableau.
Mayeux himself is a whirlwind of destruction, his blade finding its mark with unerring accuracy.
His eyes burned with the thrill of battle, and his laughter mingled with the screams of the desperate defenders.
In the end, the forest became a graveyard.
The defenders of Nurshira lay broken and defeated, their once-desperate fight reduced to a tragic, futile struggle.
Mayeux and his riders, triumphant but grim, surveyed the aftermath of the slaughter.
