Way of Overlord -
Chapter 117: Hint of Ambition
Chapter 117: Hint of Ambition
Durka’s mind was filled with a whirlwind of thoughts as he pondered the unexpected turn of events with the Zlata tribe.
He had expected fierce resistance, a battle that would test the strength and determination of both tribes.
Yet, the reality was far from his expectations.
His son, Durja, had led the warriors of Duhai tribe alongside Aeryon when they marched to attack the Zlata tribe.
But instead of meeting a defiant force on the battlefield, they were met with an unexpected gesture – a single warrior sent forth to challenge them in a duel.
As Durka reflected on this turn of events, he could not help but feel a mixture of surprise and concern.
Why did the Zlata tribe not put up a fight?
Were they truly willing to risk their fate on the outcome of a single duel? Or were they like him, forced by circumstances?
But the composition of the Zlata tribe is different from his tribe. His tribe lacks young people and have more old people than young people.
Such a decision seemed uncharacteristic for a tribe known for its strength and courage.
His son told him that when they came, the Zlata tribe seeing such a massive force coming toward their tribe, send one of their warriors to fight a duel.
It is clear from this that the Zlata tribe did not intend to fight head on and this is their last effort.
Durka listened attentively as his son, Durja, recounted the events that transpired with the Zlata tribe.
The fact that the Zlata tribe chose to send a lone warrior to fight a duel instead of mounting a full-scale defense was indeed intriguing.
It indicated a certain level of desperation or, perhaps, a calculated strategy on their part.
As Durja continued, he revealed the reason behind this unexpected approach.
Aeryon, ever the shrewd strategist, had sent envoys to the Zlata tribe before the battle begins.
These envoys introduced the impressive feats and conquests of their chief to the high-ranking members of the Zlata tribe.
By showcasing the strength and might of the Brolgadhr tribe, Aeryon’s envoys aimed to make a statement – that resistance against them would be futile.
Durja was there when the envoy began to speak. Durka told his son, to tell him what the envoy said and so Durja recounted what had happend
The atmosphere in the tent of the Zlata tribe was tense and they all look at the envoy with cold eyes.
And then this envoy shouted and his voice echoes strong inside the tent
In a grandiose and commanding voice, the envoy of Aeryon stood tall before the high-ranking members of the Zlata tribe, his words dripping with confidence and authority.
"Hear me, noble warriors of the Zlata tribe," he proclaimed, "For I bring tidings of my tribe, the Brolgadhr tribe, a force that now reigns supreme over the vast expanse of the Great Steppe! Our chief, Aeryon, is a leader of unparalleled strength, and he commands one thousand eight hundred fierce horse riders, backed by a legion of devoted warriors."
"As we speak," he continued, his eyes gleaming with pride,
"The tribes of Khamar, Ongul, Kerey, Jigorn, and the formidable Duhai tribe have all willingly bowed to the might of the Brolgadhr tribe. Even as I speak now, in the east the warriors of Kanun and Khulun tribes now find themselves besieged by our forces, their resistance faltering."
He paused for a second before adding
"When two of our tribes commanders wins that battle, a larger force would come here" he laughed and his laugh echoes all over inside the tent
"With such an unstoppable force marching toward you, there is naught but surrender or doom," he warned, his voice echoing with authority.
"The Brolgadhr tribe offers you a choice, a chance to join us and thrive under our protection, or face the consequences of resisting the tides of fate."
For a moment there is silence in the tent. The envoy then goes to the entrance and raise the tent flap of the entrance.
"The Great Steppe bears witness to the triumph of the Brolgadhr tribe," the envoy declared, his words resonating with the weight of victory.
It is understandable. The Brolgadhr tribe is a small tribe, mostly farming and minding their own business.
They are not a warlike tribe.
But since the moment Aeryon defeated the Xewa and the Ghar tribe, since ethe moment Aeryon subjugated the Khamar tribe The Ongul The Kerey and the Jigorn tribe something had changed about them
It is like a pack of sheep realizes that they are not sheep at all. But they are tigers and lions, wolves and garuda.
And with each victory, there is a sense of pride. And that pride is now slowly creating a powerful tribe.
The envoy spoke again gushing about Aeryon.
"Our chief is a leader without equal, and his ambitions know no bounds. By his side, you will find the glory of an empire that stretches as far as the eye can see."
He gestured to the warriors in the distance, their presence formidable and unwavering.
"Look upon these warriors, brothers and sisters of the Steppe, and see the strength and determination that flows through their veins. They ride with the wind, united in purpose and ready to conquer any who dare stand in their way."
"Submit to the might of the Brolgadhr tribe, and you shall find prosperity, protection, and a place of honour among our ranks," the envoy implored, his words offering both a promise and a warning.
Then his face change, his eyes cold "Defy us, and you shall face the fury of our charge, an unstoppable torrent that shall wash away all who oppose our path."
His speech concluded, the envoy stood with an air of regal authority, awaiting the response of the Zlata tribe.
The fate of their tribe now hung in the balance, and the echoes of his words lingered in the air
Aeryon reputation as a strict yet generous leader had not yet spread far and wide across the Great Steppe but to the Southern Great Steppe and the surrounding areas, everyone knows the reputation of Aeryon after he defeated the four tribes.
For the Xewa and Ghar tribe he was very merciless. But for the other four tribes that surrender, he inducted them to the Council of Elders and he did not enslave those subjugated tribe preferring for them to be willing warriors of his tribe.
His adherence to his own rules and principles earned him respect, even from his enemies. And it is because of that reputation that Durka dare to invoke the Promised Duel
What set him apart from other warlords was his ability to look beyond tribal rivalries and embrace both enemies and friends alike into his fold.
The envoy’s words to the Chief of Zlata tribe carried a promise of leniency and protection if they chose to surrender.
Unlike many warlords, Aeryon did not seek to humiliate or enslave those who submitted to him.
Instead, he offered protection and assimilation under the banner of the Brolgadhr tribe.
By choosing to join forces with Aeryon, the Zlata tribe could retain their dignity and preserve their way of life.
Under the banner of the Brolgadhr tribe, they would not be subjugated but instead be treated with respect and fairness.
This generous offer was a testament to Aeryon unique leadership style, one that aimed to unite the diverse tribes of the Great Steppe and foster a stronger and more harmonious alliance.
For Durka, this display of Aeryon leadership further solidified his belief that he had made the right choice in pledging allegiance to the Brolgadhr tribe.
Despite the differences and past animosities between tribes, Aeryon sought to create a cohesive and powerful force that transcended tribal boundaries.
His vision of unity and strength resonated with Durka, and he recognized that under Aeryon leadership, the Duhai tribe had a chance to flourish and thrive.
"And it also revealed his ambition" Durka thought to himself.
Durka has always been an astute observer. And because of that he could see some clues of Aeryon ambition
He did not kill those who he subjugated; he did not humiliate them preferring more for them to assimilate with his tribes. Lenient measures to ally and cruel methods to enemies.
But nothing is personal and every thing seems to serve a higher purpose. Durka believe that Aeryon ambition is a grand ambition
But he doesn’t know if Aeryon could do it. Aeryon seems to want to unite the Marynku people. Most of the tribes in the Southern Great Steppe are Marynku people.
And if he desires to unite the Marynku people...then it also means he wanted to unite the Southern Great Steppe
"This is a grand ambition. But it might be too grand" Durka doesn’t know much about the detailed information about the tribes all over the Southern Great Steppe
But he knows that up north, there is a great tribe that has tens of thousands of warriors and tens of thousands of horses.
A formidable tribe with formidable warriors
If Aeryon really wanted to unite the Southern Great Steppe, that tribe up north must be either eradicated or brought into the fold.
This area where Aeryon operates is mostly small tribes.
With his number superiority, he could easy subjugate them. But as Aeryon tribe grew bigger, his threat would also become more obvious.
And in the Great Steppe, nothing is more dangerous than growing too big.
Durka shakes his head.
That is not his problem to think about, he muttered to himself.
He continues listening to the story.
