Chapter 70: Ambush

We didn’t get far.

The forest pressed in around us, the mist thickening with every step.

"Something’s wrong," Mira murmured, her dagger already in her hand.

"Tell me something I don’t know," Julien muttered, his grip tight on his sword.

Felix was helping Wallace, who looked like he was about to pass out.

Leo...

Damn it.

He was walking, but his eyes were still distant. Whatever had latched onto him wasn’t gone.

"Eyes open," I murmured, keeping my cane ready.

The mist was too thick.

Too quiet.

"Professor," Mira’s voice was low. "We’re being followed."

I didn’t ask how she knew.

I felt it too.

"Positions," I murmured.

Julien shifted beside me, Mira took the flank, and Felix stayed with Wallace and Leo.

"Felix," I murmured. "If things go south—"

"I know," Felix muttered, his usual whiny tone gone. "I’ll get them out."

Good.

I turned my focus back to the mist.

They were close.

The pulse of mana was faint but growing stronger.

"Professor..." Mira’s voice was tight. "This isn’t just one group."

Figures.

"B-Class?" Julien murmured, his tone sharp.

"Most likely," I muttered.

"Of course it’s them," Julien growled.

Class B.

The second search team.

And they weren’t here for sightseeing.

"Spread out," I murmured. "We make them come to us."

"Got it."

Julien and Mira melted into the mist, their steps silent.

Felix stayed close, his hands tight on Wallace’s shoulder.

"Leo," I murmured softly.

He didn’t respond.

"Leo," I said again, my voice firmer.

His eyes flickered, barely focusing on me.

"Stay close," I said softly.

He nodded. Barely.

Good enough.

The mist shifted.

Here they come.

"Move," I murmured.

We scattered.

Julien slipped into the shadows. Mira vanished to the side.

I stayed where I was, cane ready.

Come on.

"Professor."

The voice echoed through the mist.

I knew that voice.

Elias.

Leader of the second B-Class search team.

Damn.

"Still alive?" his voice was mocking, his tone dripping with amusement. "Impressive."

"Elias," I murmured, keeping my tone calm.

"Hand over the scale, and we can pretend this never happened," Elias called, his footsteps echoing through the mist.

"Not happening," I muttered.

"Come on, Professor." His tone sharpened. "You don’t want to make this ugly."

Too late.

I felt it—

Movement.

"Now!" I barked.

Clang.

Julien’s blade clashed with an incoming attack, sparks flying as he deflected the strike.

They were already on us.

Mira’s dagger flashed, slicing through the mist.

She hit something.

"Too slow!"

Elias’ voice echoed again, and this time—

Boom.

A blast of mana tore through the mist, scattering it for a moment.

There.

I saw them.

Five figures.

All armed.

And all aiming for us.

"Class B," I muttered. "Figures."

"Professor!" Julien barked, driving his opponent back.

"On it."

Time to end this.

I pushed mana into my cane, the runes glowing faintly as I channeled my power.

"Julien, left!" I barked.

He moved without hesitation.

Clang.

His blade met another strike, forcing his opponent back.

Mira was already moving, her dagger lashing out like a shadow.

She was fast.

But so were they.

"Felix!" I barked.

"Almost there!" he hissed, dragging Wallace and Leo farther back.

Good.

"Buy me time," I murmured.

"On it," Julien growled.

He didn’t need to be told twice.

Julien surged forward, his sword cutting through the mist with raw force.

Clang.

The B-Class fighters weren’t pushovers.

But Julien wasn’t holding back anymore.

"Come on!" he snarled, his mana flaring.

Mira was already behind them, her dagger flashing as she struck from the shadows.

They didn’t see her coming.

"Two down," she murmured, her tone cold.

"Three left," I muttered, my eyes narrowing.

Elias.

He was still out there.

"Where are you hiding?" I murmured, scanning the mist.

I felt it before I saw it.

Mana.

Incoming.

"Move!" I barked.

Boom.

A blast of raw mana tore through the air where I’d been standing.

Close.

"Professor."

Elias stepped out of the mist, his sword crackling with mana.

"Still standing?" he murmured, his eyes gleaming.

"Disappointed?" I muttered.

"Not yet," he murmured.

Damn.

"Take the scale," Elias murmured, his tone sharp.

"Not happening."

He smiled.

"Wrong answer."

He moved.

Fast.

"Julien!" I barked.

"On it!"

Julien’s blade met Elias head-on.

Clang.

Mana sparked as their blades collided.

"Not bad," Elias murmured.

"But not good enough."

Boom.

A pulse of mana surged outward, forcing Julien back.

"Julien!" Mira hissed, moving fast.

But Elias was already on him.

Damn it.

I moved.

Mana surged through my cane as I closed the distance.

Clang.

I intercepted Elias’ next strike, the force sending a jolt through my arm.

"Not this time," I growled.

"Bold," Elias murmured. "But foolish."

He pushed.

I held.

Barely.

"Julien," I hissed. "Now!"

Julien moved.

Fast.

His blade swept low, aiming for Elias’ legs.

Clang.

Elias twisted, barely avoiding the strike.

"Clever," he murmured.

"Not done," I growled.

Boom.

I unleashed a pulse of mana, forcing him back.

"Now, Mira!" I barked.

She was already moving.

Her dagger lashed out, striking where Elias least expected.

Close.

But not enough.

Elias moved, his body shifting with inhuman grace.

"Not bad," he murmured.

"But still too slow."

"Not for me," Julien growled.

Clang.

His blade came down hard.

Elias blocked.

But he wasn’t ready for—

Me.

Boom.

I drove my cane into the ground, unleashing a surge of mana that shattered the ground beneath him.

Elias stumbled—

Just enough.

Julien didn’t waste the opportunity.

Clang.

His blade struck true.

Elias staggered back, blood dripping from his arm.

"Damn..." he murmured, his eyes narrowing.

"Julien," I murmured.

"Got it."

Julien moved fast, his blade flashing as he pressed the attack.

Elias was good.

Too good.

But we weren’t playing fair anymore.

Mira struck from the side, her dagger slicing toward his ribs.

He barely dodged.

But that was all we needed.

"Now!" I barked.

Julien’s blade came down—

Clang.

Elias’ sword shattered.

Done.

He staggered, his eyes wide.

"Impossible..."

"Not quite," I murmured, stepping forward.

My cane met his chest—

Boom.

A pulse of mana sent him crashing back.

Elias hit the ground, hard.

Not getting up.

"Professor..." Julien panted.

"Down," I murmured.

Finally.

Mira stood over the remaining two B-Class students.

They didn’t move.

"Handled," she murmured.

"Good."

I exhaled slowly, my body heavy.

We won.

"Felix," I murmured.

"Still here," he murmured, helping Wallace stay upright.

Leo was quiet, but...

His eyes were clearer.

Progress.

"Let’s move," I murmured.

"Before more of them show up."

We didn’t waste time.

We slipped back into the mist, leaving the bodies behind.

The scale was still ours.

But something told me...

This wasn’t over.
